Ecosystems services vulnerability of Uramba Marine Protected Area Boletín de Investigaciones
Uribe-Castañeda,Natalia; Satizabal,Carlos Andrés; Herrera Orozco,Leonardo; Cantera Kintz,Jaime Ricardo.
ABSTRACT Systems of Uramba Marine Protected Area (MPA), like marine and coastal systems worldwide, sustain a great variety of ecosystem services (ES) (i.e. coastal protection, climate regulation, or food provision, etc.). Anthropogenic and natural stressors (i.e. coastal erosion, sea level rise, or overfishing, etc.) can transform, degrade, or limit the supply of ecosystem services. This study explores the vulnerability of Uramba MPA ecosystem services to anthropogenic and natural stressors. Stressors and ecosystems services were characterized by a literature review, an expert’s workshop, fieldtrips for validation, and georeferencing. To calculate the vulnerability of ecosystem services, the magnitude of each stressor, their risks, and their resilience...

Coral cover decline on La Chola reef (Eastern Tropical Pacific) Boletín de Investigaciones
López-Victoria,Mateo; Zapata,Fernando A..
ABSTRACT La Chola Reef is located at the easternmost sector of the Eastern Tropical Pacific. This coral formation of 11 ha is dominated by branching corals of the genus Pocillopora. The main goal of this study was to evaluate changes in coral cover over time, by comparing data collected in 2002 and 2013, implementing the chain transect methodology. Additionally, we generated an up-to-date map of this reef using field data collected with a GPS and present the first in-situ water temperature data. The reef exhibited a 20% coral cover decline during the study period, with associated increases in algal cover (mainly coralline algae). Total extension of the reef seems to have remained stable during the last 30 years. Besides the usual stressors commonly...

First report of a female hawksbill turtle, Eretmochelys imbricata, in the Conservation Mosaic Bahía Málaga, Colombian Pacific Boletín de Investigaciones
Barrientos-Muñoz,Karla G.; Valencia Díaz,Miller; Hinojosa Romero,Carlos Andrés; Valencia-González,Santiago; Diazgranados,María Claudia; Sevilla Dueñas,Edward Leonardo; Ramírez-Gallego,Cristian.
ABSTRACT The Eastern Pacific hawksbill turtle is one of the most threatened management units in the world. In the Colombian Pacific it has been detected in feeding areas and in juvenile and / or sub adult’s stages. Its nesting areas and season are unknown to the country. On February 24th, 2020, the first female hawksbill turtle for the Colombian Pacific was reported, in the Conservation Mosaic of Bahía Málaga. The minimum curved carapace length was 90 cm, the curved carapace length nuchal-tip was 90.5 cm, the curved carapace width was 73.6 cm and its weight was 69 kg. The presence of a female and being the main feeding and residence area for juvenile and sub adult of the species in the Pacific of Colombia makes it essential to continue systematic...

Mapping of mudflats with UAV images in La Bocana de Iscuandé, Colombian Pacific coast Boletín de Investigaciones
Mina-Cartagena,Camilo F.; Fuentes,José E.; González,Richard Johnston.
ABSTRACT Conservation planning for marine-coastal environments requires updated and detailed maps; the aim of this work is to generate detailed maps for two mudflats in the Iscuandé River Delta (Bocana de Iscuandé) in the Colombian Pacific Coast (Department of Nariño). These are important areas for fauna, especially migratory shorebirds. To address this problem, this study investigated the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as an alternative for collecting detailed mapping information in areas of difficult access using photogrammetric methods and a geographic information system (GIS). UAV images were used to generate maps with a high level of detail at a scale of 1:10,000 that include detailed information about environments such as mudflats and...

Distribution, composition, and abundance of ichthyoplankton in three marine protected areas of the Colombian Pacific Boletín de Investigaciones
Beltrán-León,Beatriz Susana; Morales Osorio,Yaneth Alicia.
ABSTRACT With the purpose of characterizing ichthyoplankton in three marine protected areas (Sanquianga National Natural Park, Gorgona National Natural Park and Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary) in the Colombian Pacific during November 2009, scientific expeditions were carried out to obtain 56 samples by trawling with bongo nets. 3,155 / 10 m2 fish larvae were captured distributed in 1,553 larvae / 10 m2 (49.22 %) for the PNN Sanquianga; 1,411 larvae / 10m2 (44.72 %) for the Gorgona PNN and 191 larvae / 10m2 (6.05 %) for the Malpelo SFF. The main families were Engraulidae (PNN Sanquianga), Bregmacerotidae (PNN Gorgona) and Phosichthyidae (SFF Malpelo). The NMS community analysis shows that the location of the PNN Sanquianga (coastal), PNN Gorgona...

Distribution and abundance of shorebirds in tidal flats of Sanquianga National Natural Park and the mouth of Iscuandé, Nariño (Colombia), between 2009 and 2020 Boletín de Investigaciones
Johnston-González,Richard; Eusse-González,Diana; Valencia-Martínez,Natasha.
ABSTRACT 11 % of shorebirds using the American Pacific Flyway are declining and an additional 46 % have no information to estimate their population status. To understand the magnitude of these changes and their causes, baseline information is required especially at sites of concentration like the mouth of Iscuandé River (IS) and the Sanquianga National Natural Park (SNNP). To characterize the composition of shorebird communities there, ten years of standardized counts were analyzed. Using proportional abundance, prevalence and mean density of each location, it was evaluated differences between sites with a different marine influence of the Patía River. IS contributed to 63 % of the average abundance in the study area, where 80 % were small shorebirds....

Boring worms (Sipuncula and Annelida: Polychaeta) from Tropical Eastern Pacific coral reefs (Gorgona Island, Colombia) Boletín de Investigaciones
Cardona-Gutiérrez,María Fernanda; Londoño-Cruz,Edgardo.
ABSTRACT The knowledge of boring worms in the coral reefs of the Colombian Tropical Eastern Pacific (TEP) is scarce. To know which species bore into coralline substrates, experimental units made of dead branches of Pocillopora spp. were deployed and exposed in the coral reefs of Gorgona Island (Colombian Pacific) during various periods of time. A total of 571 worms in 21 species were collected. Of these, 18 were polychaetes and 3 sipunculids. Most of these species correspond to new records in the Colombian TEP, specifically 13 of the 18 species of polychaetes and 2 of the 3 species of sipunculids. These findings suggest that more research is needed to gain knowledge about the biodiversity of these poorly-known groups in understudied regions like the...

Biodiversity of sponges in rocky reefs of North Chocó, Colombian Pacific Boletín de Investigaciones
Lizarazo,Nicoll; Zea,Sven; Chasqui,Luis; Rincón-Díaz,Natalia.
ABSTRACT Compared to other groups of invertebrates, sponge (Porifera) taxonomy has been poorly developed in the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP) in general and in the Colombian Pacific in particular. This work aims to increase knowledge of the group's biodiversity in the rocky reefs of northern Chocó. Sponge samples were collected by autonomous diving, which were then processed and identified in the laboratory by standard methods. It was confirmed the low species richness and the predominance of encrusting morphologies and cryptic habits, which have been found in other studies in the region. Twenty-four (24) morphotypes belonging to 13 orders, 17 families and 21 genera were identified. Twelve (12) morphotypes were recognized at the genus level or with a...
