Lizard assemblage from a sand dune habitat from southeastern Brazil: a niche overlap analysis Anais da ABC (AABC)
WINCK,GISELE R.; HATANO,FABIO; VRCIBRADIC,DAVOR; VAN SLUYS,MONIQUE; ROCHA,CARLOS F.D..
ABSTRACT Communities are structured by interactions of historical and ecological factors, which influence the use of different resources in time and space. We acquired data on time of activity, microhabitat use and diet of a lizard assemblage from a sand dune habitat in a coastal area, southeastern Brazil (Restinga de Jurubatiba). We analyzed the data of niche overlap among species in these three axes (temporal, spatial and trophic) using null models. We found a significant overlap within the trophic niche, whereas the overlap for the other axes did not differ from the expected. Based on this result, we discuss the factors acting on the structure of the local lizard community.

Influence of substrate on the richness and composition of Neotropical cave fauna Anais da ABC (AABC)
ZEPON,TAMIRES; BICHUETTE,MARIA ELINA.
ABSTRACT The food base in the subterranean environment consists mainly of allochthonous materials. In this environment the resources are distributed generally in a heterogeneous dispersed way and the distribution of resources and their availability determine where the terrestrial invertebrates will reside, which is important for understanding ecological relationships and to establish conservation strategies. Thus, we tested how the complexity of substrates influences the richness and composition of the subterranean terrestrial invertebrates in the Presidente Olegário karst area, southeastern Brazil. We carried out collections in six caves during both dry and wet seasons, using combined collection methods. We observed different distributions in relation to...

A COMMUNITY ANALYSIS OF THE SOFT BOTTOM MEGAFAUNA (CRUSTACEA, MOLLUSCA) FROM THE SOUTHWESTERN REGION OF SANTA MARTA, COLOMBIAN CARIBBEAN Boletín de Investigaciones
Arango,Claudia P.; Solano,Oscar D..
Soft bottom megabenthic communities have been poorly studied in the Caribbean Sea. In this study we describe the structure and species composition of a Crustacea-Mollusca megafaunal community based on beam trawl samples taken between 13 and 60 m depth at the southwestern region of Santa Marta, Colombian Caribbean. Classification and ordination analyses using abundance data of crustaceans and molluscs produced two main groups (A and C), which seem to be controlled by depth and sediment characteristics. Group A consisted of species collected at the deeper stations and high content of silts (between 30 and 60 m depth) and exhibited the highest density and biomass mean values. The decapod Chasmocarcinus cilindricus was found as the characteristic species for...

Natural and human impacts on invertebrate communities in Brazilian caves BJB
FERREIRA,R. L.; HORTA,L. C. S..
Species richness, abundance, distribution and similairity between cave invertebrate communities were compared among seven caves located in the Peruaçu River valley, north of Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Such comparisons aimed to determinate the degree of biological complexity in the sampled caves, calculated by the "Index of Biological Complexity in Caves", presented in this manuscript. The presence of potencial or real impacts on the cave fauna was also investigated. A total of 1,468 individuals belonging to 57 families of: Acarina, Pseudoscorpionida, Araneida, Opilionida, Amblypygi, Isopoda, Geophilomorpha, Scutigeromorpha, Spirostreptida, Coleoptera, Collembola, Diptera, Dictyoptera, Ephemeroptera, Ensifera, Heteroptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera,...

Research on the barriers and limits to climate change adaptation identifies many factors, but describes few processes whereby adaptation is constrained or may indeed fail to avoid catastrophic losses. It often assumes that barriers are by and large distinct from limits to adaptation. We respond to recent calls for comparative studies that are able to further knowledge about the underlying drivers of barriers and limits to adaptation. We compare six cases from across Australia, including those in alpine areas, rivers, reefs, wetlands, small inland communities, and islands, with the aim of identifying common underlying drivers of barriers and limits to adaptation. We find that the path-dependent nature of the institutions that govern natural resources and...

Resilience strategies in the face of short- and long-term change: out-migration and fisheries regulation in Alaskan fishing communities Ecology and Society
Himes-Cornell, Amber; National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; amber.himes@noaa.gov; Hoelting, Kristin; Colorado State University; kristin.hoelting@colostate.edu.
Historically, communities persisted in remote, isolated areas of Alaska in large part because of the abundance of marine and terrestrial resources, as well as the ability of local people to opportunistically access those resources as they became available. Species switching and the ability to shift effort away from fisheries during poor years allowed local residents to diversify their livelihoods in the face of uncertainties and ecological change. The advent of modern fisheries management, which views Alaskan fisheries as the property of all citizens of the United States, has fundamentally altered the relationship of place-based communities to fishery resources. Local access to fisheries has been particularly affected by the development of transferable...

Benthic macroinvertebrate communities in sites with native forest presence and absence in north Patagonia Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Ríos-Escalante,Patricio De los; Esse,Carlos; Santander-Massa,Rodrigo; Saavedra,Pablo; Encina-Montoya,Francisco.
ABSTRACT The benthic fauna in northern Patagonian streams is characterized by presence of water quality indicator species. The aim of the present study was characterized the benthic communities in streams associated to sites with presence of Nothofagus forests and with human intervention without Nothofagus forests using null models in ecology, unified neutral theory of biodiversity (UNTB) and unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA). The results of species co-occurrence null model revealed that species associations are random, whereas the results of niche overlap null models revealed the presence of niche overlap. The UNTB results revealed low species number. The results of UPGMA revealed that species composition is specific for each site...

Sensitivity of marine systems to climate and fishing: Concepts, issues and management responses ArchiMer
Perry, R. Ian; Cury, Philippe; Brander, Keith; Jennings, Simon; Moellmann, Christian; Planque, Benjamin.
Modern fisheries research and management must understand and take account of the interactions between climate and fishing, rather than try to disentangle their effects and address each separately. These interactions are significant drivers of change in exploited marine systems and have ramifications for ecosystems and those who depend on the services they provide. We discuss how fishing and climate forcing interact on individual fish, marine populations, marine communities, and ecosystems to bring these levels into states that are more sensitive to (i.e. more strongly related with) climate forcing. Fishing is unlikely to alter the sensitivities of individual finfish and invertebrates to climate forcing. It will remove individuals with specific...

The ecosystems exploited by fishing are complex. The species which are sought after and their distribution rely on numerous processes, in time and space. The understanding of marine ecosystems requires important means and diverse information including those of professional fishing and scientific cruises. At first, scientific fishing cruises aimed to explore marine fauna and discover new halieutic resources. They were in line with the exploration cruises carried out by Prince Albert 1st of Monaco at the end of the XIXth century. However, since the beginning of the 1970s, they have been focusing on the quantification of the resources exploited by fishing. [...] After a series of "Understanding keys" aimed at helping the reader understand the methodology and...
