The long-term nitrogen mineralization and stability of compost based on easily available plant residues was examined. Four different composts were prepared from wheat straw and clover-grass hay, one treatment receiving all material initially (100/0), two treatments where addition of 75% of the clover-grass was postponed for 3 weeks (75/25,3w) respectively 8 weeks (75/25,8w) and one treatment receiving only 25% of the clover-grass added to the other treatments (25/0). Mineralization and stability of the compost was followed for 24 weeks in leaching tubes, leached regularly by 0.01 M CaCl2. Postponing the addition of the clover-grass hay for 3 weeks (75/25,3w) during composting had a significant effect on the N mineralization rate leading to more mineralised... |

The application of sewage sludge to agricultural land, a common practice to recycle nutrients in the past, is currently prohibited in organic farming due to the risk of soil contamination from pollutants (e.g. toxic and potentially toxic elements, persistent organic pollutants, etc.). Incineration or disposal to landfill of dewatered sludge is costly, leads to greenhouse gas emissions, and eliminates the possibility of nutrient recovery, especially phosphorus. Options to treat dry organic matter are combustion and gasification, among other technologies to produce ashes or chars and to recover the residues for nutrient recycling. Dependent on the technology applied as well as the input material, nutrient concentrations and concentration of contaminants vary... |

Quality compost can have a positive effect on soil fertility and plant growth and health. This positive effect is not only observable in the laboratory, but also by growers. Phytopathological problems could be solved with the use of compost. Durable success can only be obtained if a quality management is resolutely followed. Further research is needed to optimize the quality management of compost production and utilization. For example, very little is known about the long-term effect of the different composts on soil fertility and disease receptivity. |

The work aims to investigate the effects of different soil management strategies on carbon sequestration and total nitrogen in areas of vineyards suffering from loss of soil functionality. Treatments, selected for inter-row management, to re-install soil functionality were based on compost or other organic amendments (COMP), green manure (GM), and dry mulching (DM) strategies using winter legumes and cereals. Cover crops were seeded in fall and mown in late spring, leaved in the ground for mulching in DM or incorporated into the uppermost soil layers in GM. Such approaches were investigated in six vineyards in Italy, six in France, and two vineyards in Slovenia and Turkey. The results showed that COMP significantly increased total organic carbon (TOC)... |

In order to assess the risk of the use of recycled phosphorus (P) fertilisers for organic farming, the potential accumulation of heavy metals in soil after a 200-year fertilizer application equivalent to 11 kg P ha-1 yr-1 was calculated in a mass balance approach. Both fertilizers currently allowed in organic farming and recycled P fertilizers were regarded. For heavy metals, four scenarios with two soil pH levels (pH 5 and pH 7) and two precipitation excess levels (F 0.1 and F 0.3 m yr-1) were calculated. Recycled P fertilizers like struvite, meat- and bone meal, ashes, sewage sludge and digestate, as well as phosphate rock and triple superphosphate had a higher P content and a lower heavy metal-to-P ratio than composts. Consequently, compost application... |

Plant based organic fertilisers were tested in plot trials on their effect as N supply for vegetable crops. Radishes (Raphanus sativus L.) and white cabbage (Brassica d-eracea var. capitata L.) were chosen as fest crops. Beside the unamended control four ({R}adish trial) and two ({C}abbage trial) fertilisers were investigated: Castor pomace (Ricinus communis L), pellets of crushed seeds of lupin (Lupinus luteus L), and faba bean (Vicia faba var. minor L.) and Phytoperls® (Zea mays L). They were applied in two N-levels {(R): 80 and 140 kg N ha-1; (C): 120 and 240 kg N ha1 with the two first mentioned fertilisers}. Castor pomace and lupin seed pellets were found to be more efficient N supplies than faba bean seed pellets and Phytoperls®; on the Iow level... |

Considerable amounts of methane and nitrous oxide were emitted during storage of solid pig manure generated by slurry separation. The production of greenhouse gases inside the heap was found to be heavily influenced by the oxygen accessibility, which again was influenced by length of storage and the distance to the heap surface. This implies that emission of greenhouse gases from stores of solid manure may be heavily influenced by the size of heaps and the length of storage. Attention should therefore be paid to the size of heap and the length of the storage period when composting studies for inventories of greenhouse gas emission are planned or used. |

A field was carried out on an ultisol in humid area of Edo State, Nigeria to evaluate the effects of plant density and cattle dung manure application on soil nutrient status and okra pod yield. Treatments consisted of three levels of cow dung (0, 300 and 450 kg N ha-1) and three plant densities (47,619, 66,666 and 83,333 plants per hectare (pph)). A 3 x 3 factorial arrangement fitted into randomized complete block design and replicated three times. Data were collected on soil chemical properties and pod yield of okra. Routine analysis of the soil indicated that the soil was low in nutrient content, thus addition of cattle dung to the soil at various levels influenced the soil nutrient status positively. After cropping with okra, cattle dung application had... |

Composts can influence soil fertility and plant health. These influences can be positive or negative, depending of the quality of the composts. Some practitioners already make use of the positive effects on plant health. For example, they use composts to protect their plants against soil borne diseases in substrate, or to detoxify and reactivate soil after steaming. In order to estimate the potential of Swiss composts to influence soil fertility and plant health positively, we analyzed one hundred composts representative of the different composting systems and qualities available on the market. The organic substance and the nutrient content of the composts varied greatly between the composts; the materials of origin were the major factor influencing... |

Organic horticultural production systems often are characterized by the use of beneficial soil microorganisms because the application of soluble inorganic P or N fertilizers is not endorsed. Due to the limited supply of soluble nutrients in organic production systems, nutrient deficiency may limit plant growth and yield. The sole use of peat for pot-based cultures is also discouraged in organic production systems. Therefore, we have studied viable alternatives for highly soluble fertilizers and pure peat substrates using leek [Allium ampeloprasum L. var. Porrum] as a test plant. Plants were grown on peat-based substrates with different rates of compost additions, and with and without inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. Inoculation with a... |
