Experimental and numerical characterization of an oyster farm impact on the flow ArchiMer
Gaurier, Benoit; Germain, Gregory; Kervella, Youen; Davourie, Julia; Cayocca, Florence; Lesueur, Patrick.
Shellfish farming, particularly oyster farms, suffers from strong siltation phenomena which are harmful to the production of shellfish. The lack of knowledge about the impact of an oyster farm on the wave propagation and on the flow remains a significant difficulty for the comprehension of sediment transport processes in coastal zones. These effects are one of the possible sources of sedimentation. The study presented here focuses on describing finely hydrodynamical phenomena (velocity fields, turbulence parameters) around oyster tables. The analysis is based on experimental trials carried out in a flume tank on reduced models of oyster tables. Experiments highlight the flow perturbations in the near field and constitute a database for validation of...

Performance assessment of a vertical axis turbine in a marine current flume tank and CFD modelling ArchiMer
Rolland, S.a.; Thatcher, M.; Ellis, R.; Gaurier, Benoit; Croft, T.n.; Cross, M..
As advances in numerical modelling techniques support the increased confidence in predictions from computer simulations, the need remains to have experimental verification built into the design process. This paper outlines the experimental investigation carried out on a shielded vertical axis turbine in a marine environment. The experiments consist of performance measurements and the use of particle image velocimetry on a small scale device in a marine current flume. The results demonstrate that the performance of the device can be modelled numerically; in particular, the results show that the numerical model used can correctly predict the increase in performance with Reynolds number.

Validation of the dynamic load characteristics on a Tidal Stream Turbine when subjected to wave and current interaction ArchiMer
Lloyd, Catherine; Allmark, Matthew; Ordonez-sanchez, Stephanie; Martinez, Rodrigo; Johnstone, Cameron; Germain, Gregory; Gaurier, Benoit; Mason-jones, Allan; O'Doherty, Tim.
A comparison of a tidal turbine's performance and structural loads is conducted using lab-scale numerical models and experimental testing under multiple current-only and wave-current conditions at the IFREMER wave-current flume. Experimental testing, used to validate CFD models, was accomplished using a 0.9 m diameter, 3-bladed tidal turbine and had a blockage ratio of 8% while the turbine was submerged. Initial investigations analysed the performance and loads on the turbine under uniform and profiled current-only conditions. The presence of a profiled velocity gradient was found to have a negligible effect on the average performance characteristics; however, transient thrust, torque and out of plane bending moment loads experienced much greater...

Proposal of a sluice-type fish pass Neotropical Ichthyology
Haselbauer,Matthias A.; Martinez,Carlos Barreira.
One-dimensional design of fish passes often leads to an unsatisfying solution. The problems are due to insufficient, if not completely missing, collaboration between biologists and civil engineers. In the present paper, a new type of fish pass is presented. A labyrinth flux develops in a system of sequential sluices and baffles in between, which uncouple the supercritical flow of the single sluices. A series of biological, hydraulic and numerical experiments was carried out in order to investigate the optimum configuration in terms of geometric issues, regarding the biological needs and performances of organisms to be transported. Following this optimization, fish can control the prevailing flow conditions quite well. Because the air entrainment into the...

Thermal comfort monitoring in aviaries by a real-time data acquisition system AGRIAMBI
Camargo,Tiago F. B.; Silva,Robson L.; Higa,Márcio; Coutinho,Mônica R.; Oliveira,Júlio C. D. de; Conceição,Wagner A. dos S..
ABSTRACT Thermal comfort inside broiler husbandry facilities is essential in obtaining good results in the production activity. Assessment of adequate thermodynamic conditions requires measurement and control, usually implying costs and specialized maintenance. The objective of this research was to monitor the temperature, relative humidity and air speed distributions by a developed low-cost, open-source and easy-to-use measurement system, using Arduino (hardware) and Scilab (software) for real-time data acquisition. Sensors were installed in a real facility (Cianorte, PR), with measurements for internal ambient (20 sensors for temperature/relative humidity, and two sensors for differential pressure, respectively 0.5 and 1.5 m high) and external ambient...

Computer simulation of a Rietema-family hydrocyclone used in irrigated agriculture1 Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Tonin,Paulo César; Dantas Neto,José; Santos,José Airton Azevedo dos.
The hydrocyclone is a centrifugal separator that has been used for over 50 years in the chemical processing and mining industries. In irrigated agriculture in Brazil it is not used as often. One reason for this is the poor understanding by designers of the complex phenomena involved in the internal flow of the hydrocyclone, and the lack of knowledge of new computational tools available on the market. This study evaluates the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) as a potential tool to be used in the design and optimisation of hydrocyclones used in irrigated agriculture. A 50 mm Rietema-family hydrocyclone is simulated using CFD. The turbulent flow inside the hydrocyclone is modelled using the Reynolds Stress Model, and a Eulerian approach is employed...

COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF A CHIMNEY SOLAR DRYER FOR CHILLI PEPPER CIGR Journal
Kumi, Francis.
The postharvest losses of agricultural produce in Ghana and other developing countries is high. Efforts to promote shelf-life extension of the fresh produce is centred around temperature and moisture management. Moisture control by drying is suited to a number of crops as it inhibits microbial decay and physiological processes of deterioration. However, there are often inefficient drying infrastructure in developing countries. Thus, the focus of this research was to structurally modify a chimney solar dryer originally designed by the Horticulture Innovation Laboratory of the University of California, Davis and include sea pebbles in the collector base to enhance its heating system and drying performance.  A computational fluid dynamics analysis using ANSYS...

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of grain-water suspensions in tube CIGR Journal
Datta, Ashis Kumar; Bhunia, Kanishka; Sharma, Ranjeet.
In this study of solid-liquid flow, rice and cassava starch particles were used as the dispersed media and water was used as the carrier fluid. Experiments were carried out on slurries with solid concentrations of 5%, 10% and 15% w/w which flowed in a 13mm ID and 3 m long tube –in - tube heat exchanger. Steam was used as the heating medium. Calculated convective film to particle heat transfer coefficient (hfp) values ranged from 11 to 32 kW m -2 K -1 for cassava and rice particles with uncertainty of ± 2 kW m -2 K -1. A decrease in heat transfer coefficient values was found as a result of short residence time at the higher flow rates. To investigate the solid-liquid two-phase flow Eulerian multiphase model was adopted in simple axisymmetric geometry....

Design of a three-dimensional hand/forearm model to apply computational fluid dynamics BABT
Marinho,Daniel Almeida; Reis,Victor Machado; Vilas-Boas,João Paulo; Alves,Francisco Bessone; Machado,Leandro; Rouboa,Abel Ilah; Silva,António José.
The purpose of this study was to develop a three-dimensional digital model of a human hand and forearm to apply Computational Fluid Dynamics to propulsion analysis in swimming. Computer tomography scans of the hand and forearm of an Olympic swimmer were applied. The data were converted, using image processing techniques, into relevant coordinate input, which could be used in Computational Fluid Dynamics software. From that analysis, it was possible to verify an almost perfect agreement between the true human segment and the digital model. This technique could be used as a means to overcome the difficulties in developing a true three-dimensional model of a specific segment of the human body. Additionally, it could be used to improve the use of Computational...

Investigation on the nasal airflow characteristics of anterior nasal cavity stenosis BJMBR
Wang,T.; Chen,D.; Wang,P.H.; Chen,J.; Deng,J..
We used a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model to study the inspiratory airflow profiles of patients with anterior nasal cavity stenosis who underwent curative surgery, by comparing pre- and postoperative airflow characteristics. Twenty patients with severe anterior nasal cavity stenosis, including one case of bilateral stenosis, underwent computed tomography (CT) scans for CFD modelling. The pre- and postoperative airflow characteristics of the nasal cavity were simulated and analyzed. The narrowest area of the nasal cavity in all 20 patients was located within the nasal valve area, and the mean cross-sectional area increased from 0.39 cm2 preoperative to 0.78 cm2 postoperative (P<0.01). Meanwhile, the mean airflow velocity in the nasal valve area...
