To mitigate odor and gas emission concern, different management practices and treatment technologies are available. In this study, the effectiveness of the Digest3+3© microbial additive was evaluated for reducing odor and pollutant gas emission from a swine gestation-farrowing operation in North Dakota.  In this experiment, one of the deep pits in the facility was left untreated (GC) and the other deep pit was treated (GT) with the Digest 3+3 (22.68 kg/month).  Similarly, shallow pits in one of the farrowing units were treated (FT) with the microbial additive, while another unit was untreated (FC as the control).  Air samples were collected from exhaust fans using a vacuum chamber and Tedlar bags.  Odor detection threshold values were determined using a...

Evaluation of the acerola juice concentrated by reverse osmosis 52

The aim of this study was to obtain the acerola juice using separation processes with membranes. The acerola pulp was initially defrosted and treated with 100 ppm of Citrozym Ultra L enzyme at 45ºC for one hour, then ultrafiltrated at 3 bar at 45ºC using 0.1 µm ceramic membrane, and concentrated by reverse osmosis using a spiral membrane of a compound film. The pressures on the reverse osmosis were 20, 30, and 40 bar at environmental temperature, thus, resulting a juice with 9.76, 14.56, and 17.36 ºBrix, respectively. The physicochemical characteristics of the juice were preserved and, studies on evaluation of the public acceptability, showed that 75% of the consumers liked the juice.

Rheological behavior of concentrated tucupi 116

Abstract Tucupi, which is widely enjoyed in the North region of Brazil, is a fermented liquid derived from cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) and has been taken abroad for its exotic characteristics. This study aimed to assess the rheological behavior of tucupi with 30, 35, and 40% solids and concentrated at 50, 70, and 90 °C. The rheological data were obtained at 25, 40, 60, and 80 °C with increasing and decreasing shear rates. Rheology at 25 °C indicated that the partial gelification of starch during concentration causes a decrease in the product’s viscosity and, if the concentration is carried out at a temperature that favors total starch gelification, the product’s viscosity increases. En el presente trabajo se evaluó la demanda nutrimental de las variedades de fresa Albión, Festival, Jacona y Zamorana, durante su ciclo de desarrollo, cultivadas bajo condiciones de túnel de plástico, en sustrato de fibra de coco y fertirriego, en la zona de Zamora, Michoacán. Se muestreó parte aérea mas corona, para determinar materia seca, concentración nutrimental y contenido nutrimental, durante un periodo de 165 días después del trasplante, con muestreos cada 15 días. En el experimento uno se evaluó el efecto del suministro de La (5, 10, 20, 30 y 40 µM) y dos fuentes [LaCl3 y La(NO3)3] durante el ciclo de cultivo de tulipán var. Se evaluó el efecto de seis concentraciones de conidios de Penicillium digitatum con el objetivo de determinar la concentración óptima que permita 100% de infección en frutos de limón persa en postcosecha. El hongo se aisló de frutos de limón mexicano del estado de Colima, Méx. Cada concentración (1 x 105, 3 x 105, 5 x 105, 7 x 105, 9 x 105, 1 x 106 esporas mL-1), se colocó en heridas de 2 mm profundidad x 1mm de ancho, aproximadamente, hechas en frutos en etapa de madurez de corte. Распределение ртути в воде и донных отложениях в местах локализации струйных метановых газовыделений со дна Черного моря 13

Представлены современные данные о распределении ртути в районах струйных метановых газовыделений со дна Черного моря. Приведены профили вертикального распределения растворенной, взвешенной и общей ртути в воде и донных отложениях окислительной и восстановительной зон моря. Проведено сравнение распределения ртути в толще воды и донных отложениях на разных глубинах в зависимости от акустической регистрации газовых потоков. Приведены результаты содержания ртути в образцах карбонатных построек из мест струйных выходов газа. Показано, что в Черном море существует новый источник ртутного загрязнения вод.

Comportamento da clorofila em procedências de grevílea (Grevillea robusta Cunn.) no Noroeste do Paraná. 14

Avaliou-se, de três a quatro anos de idade, as concentrações de clorofila a, clorofila b clorofila total e, a relação clorofila a/b de quatro diferentes procedências de grevílea (Grevillea robusta Cunn.), nos períodos de verão e inverno, plantadas na Região de Nova Esperança. Os resultados possibilitaram as seguintes conclusões: 1) em média, a grevílea na região de Nova Esperança, apresentou concentrações 30,42% mais elevadas de clorofila a em relação a clorofila b, no verão e concentrações 24,07% mais elevadas de clorofila a em relação a clorofila b, no inverno. 2) em média, a grevílea na região de Nova Esperança, apresentou concentração de 27,34% mais elevada de clorofila total, no verão, quando comparada com o inverno. 3) As procedências australianas...

TRANSMER, un modèle hydrodynamique rapide et précis pour la simulation à moyen et long terme des transferts de radionucléides en Manche et dans le sud de la Mer du Nord 5

TRANSMER hydrodynamic model simulates dispersion of dissolved substances in seawater at the scale of the English Channel and the south of the North Sea with a mesh size of one kilometre and a time step of 30 minutes. It has been qualitatively and quantitatively validated by 1400 measurement of 125Sb in seawater. This model evaluates the medium- and long-term consequences of releases of soluble pollutants in the marine ecosystem under normal or accidental conditions, at a very low computation cost (it takes less than one hour to simulate one year).

Response of benthic organisms to seasonal change of organic matter deposition in the bathyal Sagami Bay, central Japan 5

An interdisciplinary research project was carried out to understand seasonal carbon cycling in a deep-sea ecosystem in Sagami Bay, central Japan. Temporal-changes in the chloroplastic pigment (CPE) concentration in the sediment, as well as the abundance, the biomass and the metabolic activity of benthic organisms were studied. CPE was detectable throughout the year, and its amount increased in the spring when a fluffy layer was observed on the surface of the sediment. Significant seasonal fluctuation of bacterial abundance was found, but the range was small, the maximal value being only 1.6 times larger than the minimal one. Concentration and purification of Porphyridium cruentum exopolysaccharides by membrane filtration at various cross-flow velocities 5

Exopolysaccharides (EPS) from cell-free Porphyridium cruentum media were concentrated then purified (diafiltration) on a 0.14 µm ceramic membrane. The influence of cross-flow velocities on filtration performances was investigated. Mean permeate fluxes equal to 49.8, 68.9 and 81.9 L.h-1. m-2 were obtained during the concentration at 4 bar for respectively cross-flow velocities inside the membrane lumen equal to 2.5, 3.3 and 4.2 m.s-1; 49.7 L.h-1. m-2 for the diafiltration at 3.3 m.s-1. Permeate fluxes were correctly predicted from polysaccharide concentrations (10 % deviation). Volume reduction factors higher than 7.8 were reached. METROC program (part of the MEDICIS program about study and fate of the chemical contamination in Western Mediterranean Sea) focuses on sources and wastes issued by large metropolis, with the agglomeration of Marseille as a pilot site. This report presents the results of a sampling campaign in rivers and urban discharges in Marseille and on different types of contaminants (metals, PAH, PCB and PBDE) in dissolved and particulate phases, in dry and rain periods. Results show that concentrations of pollutants are greater in Aygalades river (metals and organic contaminants) and in Emissaire 2, sewer overflows and torrents. Au cours d'une campagne effectuée dans le bassin de Marennes-Oléron en début juillet 1976, il a été observé un développement important du dinoflagellé Prorocentrum micans EHR. Bien que sa répartition ait été soumise à l'influence des marées, deux zones de fortes concentration sont restées situées dans le centre et le sud du bassin ostréicole. Les mortalités d'huîtres ont été observées durant cette période sans qu'une relation de toxicité ait pu être mise en évidence.

Potential ways to address the issues that relate to the techniques for analyzing food and environmental samples for the presence of enteric viruses are discussed. It is not the authors' remit to produce or recommend standard or reference methods but to address specific issues in the analytical procedures. Foods of primary importance are bivalve molluscs, particularly, oysters, clams, and mussels; salad crops such as lettuce, green onions and other greens; and soft fruits such as raspberries and strawberries.
