Tratamiento de aguas residuales con humedales artificiales en Tlapanaloya, municipio de Tequisquiac, Estado de México. Colegio de Postgraduados
Avelar Roblero, Juan Uriel.

Constructed wetlands for domestic wastewater treatment in a Mediterranean climate region in Chile Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Mancilla Villalobos,Rodrigo; Zúñiga,Jimena; Salgado,Eduardo; Schiappacasse,Maria Cristina; Chamy Maggi,Rolando.
Background: Constructed wetlands are a promising, cheap and effective wastewater treatment in small communities. The studies on these systems have been reported mainly from cold, tropical or subtropical climate regions. In this work we constructed a pilot plant with six horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands (HSSF CWs) with a surface area of 2 m² and a depth of 0.6 m each, planted with Typha latifolia or Scirpus sp., and filled with gravel (G) or fine gravel (FG) of 2.8 and 1.2 cm of diameter respectively, continuously fed with raw domestic wastewater. This experimental setup was evaluated over 280 days for the removal of organic matter and nutrients in a Mediterranean climate, near Valparaíso, Chile. The removal of total COD, NH4+-N and PO4-3-P...

TREATMENT OF SEPTIC TANK SLUDGE IN A VERTICAL FLOW CONSTRUCTED WETLAND SYSTEM REA
Andrade,Cynthia F.; Sperling,Marcos Von; Manjate,Elias S..
ABSTRACT: The study consisted of the evaluation of the treatment of septic tank sludge in a vertical constructed wetland system (CW), built according to the first stage of the French system. The system operated also for sewage treatment and one of the beds (area of 29.1 m2, height of the support medium of 0.7 m and planted with Tifton 85 grass, Cynodon dactylon Pers), began to receive the application of sludge from clean-pit trucks once a week. The percolated liquid was directed to post-treatment in the other two beds of the French system. The application of the raw sludge had average hydraulic loading rate of 13.1 m3/m2.year and solids loading rate of 81 kgTS/m2.year. The system improved the quality of percolated liquid in terms of carbonaceous and...

CHARACTERIZATION OF CLOGGING MATERIAL FROM HORIZONTAL SUBSURFACE FLOW CONSTRUCTED WETLAND SYSTEMS REA
Miranda,Suymara T.; Matos,Antonio T.; Matos,Mateus P.; Borges,Alisson C.; Baptestin,Gheila C. F..
ABSTRACT This study aimed to characterize the material composition responsible for clogging the porous medium of horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland (HSSF–CW) systems, which is detrimental to a proper system operation. Six completely clogged HSSF–CWs were used after treatment of swine wastewater. Operating conditions of these systems were named CW–C (HSSF– CW 1 and HSSF–CW 4, non-cultivated, i.e. controls), CW–T (HSSF–CW 2 and HSSF–CW 5, cultivated with Tifton 85 (Cynodon spp.)), and CW–A (HSSF–CW 3 and HSSF–CW 6, cultivated with alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides)). The results showed that most of the clogging material was composed of total fixed solids (95, 84, and 82% in CW–C, CW–T, and CW–A, respectively). However, total volatile...

HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY VARIABILITY IN HORIZONTAL SUBSURFACE FLOW CONSTRUCTED WETLANDS REA
Baptestini,Gheila C. F.; Matos,Antonio T.; Martinez,Mauro A.; Borges,Alisson C.; Matos,Mateus P..
ABSTRACT Many modifications in hydrodynamic conditions occur inside the bed of a horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland (HSSF–CW) in operation. Studies on hydraulic conductivity measurement techniques in HSSF–CW are imperative since the monitoring of flow conditions is essential for understanding and controlling its clogging. This study aimed to assess the hydrodynamic behavior in HSSF–CW by means of saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) analysis. For this, six HSSF–CW were used: two non-cultivated (control), two cultivated with Tifton 85 (Cynodon spp.), and two cultivated with alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides). Application of swine wastewater (SW) in HSSF–CW started on June 15, 2011, with Ks measurement period between September 9 and...

Potential of Artificial Wetlands for Removing Pesticides from Water in a Cost-Effective Framework AgEcon
Martin, Elsa; Destandau, Francois; Rozan, Anne.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the implication of wetland construction for the cost-effective design of a pesticide charge. A model is developed in order to show that, for a given target, the introduction of wetland construction can reduce overall abatement costs and can lower the input charge asked to the farmers. This result remains true as long as the cost of constructing a wetland is not too high. A numerical illustration is carried out in order to simulate pesticide regulations in a wine catchment in North-East of France

GROWTH AND YIELD PERFORMANCE OF HOT PEPPER USING AQUACULTURE WASTEWATER CIGR Journal
Omotade, Ifeoluwa Funmilola.
A field experiment was conducted to determine the growth and yield performance of hot pepper using aquaculture wastewater. Some parameters used as indicies to ascertain the usability of wastewaters such as pH, Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), nitrate, phosphate, chloride and Electrical Conductivity (EC) were also considered in the analysis. Soil analysis was also carried out to determine the quantity of the nutrients that affect the growth and yield performance of the pepper. ANOVA was used as a statistical tool for the analysis. The research was carried out at the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Technology, Teaching and Research Farm, the Federal University of...
