World bivalve molluscs production (capture + aquaculture) has been increasing substantially in the last fifty years, going from nearly one million tonnes in 1950 to about 15 million tonnes in 2012. Being filter feeders, bivalves utilise natural plankton and detritus as feed and do not require artificial feeds. But this filter feeding nature is also the reason for the requirement of strict environmental hygiene to produce bivalves safe for human consumption. They tend to concentrate microorganisms, toxins and chemicals from the environment and therefore, their safety management requires stringent sanitary measures to ensure consumer protection. Afiatalkorúak célcsoportja a piac leginkább befolyásolható szegmensét jelenti. Kutatásaink szerint a fiatalok fele nem fordít különösebb figyelmet az egészséges táplálkozásra, s a fiataloknak csupán egyharmada érti az élelmiszercímke jelöléseit. Súlyosbítja a helyzetet, hogy magas zsír-, só-, cukortartalmú élelmiszereket (például gyorséttermi láncok termékei, kóla, chips) népszerűsítenek. Ahazai élelmiszercímke-szabályozásban mindenképpen célszerű figyelembe venni más országok gyakorlatát, különös tekintettel az Egyesült Államok élelmiszercímkéire, valamint a Magyar Nemzeti Szívalapítvány elképzeléseire. Az elmaradás eredménye a 20%-ban túlsúlyos, egészségügyi problémákkal küzdő fiatal nemzedék!...

The environmental emergencies, the alimentary crisis, the increase of chronic illnesses, pushes the consumers to seek informative channels often also "virtual" as a reassurance for their own health, for the salubriousness of food and above all as a direct channel with the enterprises. The Economics of Alternative Strategies for the Reduction of Food-borne Diseases in Developing Countries: The Case of Diarrhea in Rwanda AgEcon

The paper provides a methodology which is suitable for the analysis of the social cost of disease and the benefits and cost of health intervention by integrating public health analysis and economics. The approach developed in the paper is applied to food-borne diarrhea in Rwanda. The results suggest that simple treatments such as Oral Rehydration Therapy have a higher social rate of return than consumer protection via education.

A Pro-Market Agenda for El Salvador AgEcon

This paper argues that, despite important productivity gains, reforms have benefited consumers much less than expected in El Salvador. Antitrust legislation, consumer protection and an adequate regulation of privatized utilities are central ingredients of a successful market economy. Major reforms that are needed in each one of these areas in El Salvador are described.

The economics of reducing food-borne diseases in developing countries: the case of diarrhea in Rwanda AgEcon

The paper provides a methodology which is suitable for the analysis of the social cost of disease and the benefits and cost of health intervention by integrating public health analysis and economics. The approach developed in the paper is applied to food-borne diarrhea in Rwanda. The results suggest that both prevention and treatment are socially very profitable. However, simple treatments such as Oral Rehydration Therapy have a higher social rate of return than prevention.

Authors suppose the amounts of fraudulent seafood sales reported in recent years to be somehow correlated to the problems of Italian commercial fish-naming policy. However, given the lack of data and studies, the work has an exploratory nature focusing on three main issues: the seafood labeling policy framework, the evolution of lists of fish species’ trade names and the spread and type of fraudulent sales. According data authors believe that the fish-naming system is improving, however that lack of studies estimating the right amount of diversification in trade names for marine species seems so to be a weakness for a winning policy. Furthermore, seafood retailers seems to assume an important role on fraud management and government should support research...
