Many potentially harmful pesticides for both human health and the environment are used in Brazilian Amazon. However, no scientific datum on pesticide usage is presently available for this region. Consequently, it is difficult to assess which substances arc used and in which quantities. Development of a Prototype for Measurement of Electrical Energy BABT

ABSTRACT The present work presents the development of a system of measurement of electric energy consumption. This system shows the consumer the amount of energy consumed and its respective monetary value in real time. The prototype was used in a case study to validate its operation. Data were collected to discuss the results obtained. In order to verify if the results obtained in the prototype were correct, several measurements of energy consumption were made in different residential equipment. The consumption values measured by the prototype were compared with the values obtained by the certified and calibrated energy meter provided by COPEL and were satisfactory.

The experiment was carried out in the sheep division of Universidade Federal de Lavras, aiming to evaluate the effect of different concentrate : voluminous ratio on the performance of Santa Inês lamb after wean. 40 lambs, male uncastrated, were used and fed with four different diets: diet A (100% concentrate), diet B (75:25 concentrate : voluminous) , diet C (50:50 concentrate : voluminous) , diet D (25:75 concentrate : voluminous). A high demand for Chilean cheese has resulted in increased cheese production. This increase represents an opportunity to promote the development of new markets, such as for small ruminant cheeses. Abstract The aim of this study is to describe the characteristics of consumers and non-consumers, the reasons and foods associated with coffee intake among adults from the Federal District, Brazil. This is a cross-sectional population-based survey conducted by telephone interview (n= 1,368). We collected information on detailed coffee intake, socio-demographic aspects and personal characteristics. The coffee had an average daily intake of 319 mL. Individuals were more likely to drink coffee at an older age (68%) and with higher body mass index (58%). The most cited reason for consuming coffee was the “personal pleasure” (48%), followed by “habit / tradition” of consuming coffee. Fish consumption preferences are affected by individuals’ socioeconomic characteristics. The aims of the present paper were (i) to obtain information on fish consumption level and frequency; (ii) to investigate the associations between the socioeconomic characteristics of consumers and their preferences; and (iii) to examine the influence of determinants on fish consumption. Data were gathered through a questionnaire completed by a total of 127 randomly selected individuals from different socioeconomic backgrounds from the Antakya, Turkey. Consumer Preferences Determine Resilience of Ecological-Economic Systems Ecology and Society

We perform a model analysis to study the origins of limited resilience in coupled ecological-economic systems. We demonstrate that under open access to ecosystems for profit-maximizing harvesting forms, the resilience properties of the system are essentially determined by consumer preferences for ecosystem services. In particular, we show that complementarity and relative importance of ecosystem services in consumption may significantly decrease the resilience of (almost) any given state of the system. We conclude that the role of consumer preferences and management institutions is not just to facilitate adaptation to, or transformation of, some natural dynamics of ecosystems. In this study, it was discussed the efficiency criteria in each of the elements that compose a central pivot, and this analysis was applied to two sets of systems located in regions of Cruz Alta and Santo Augusto, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The methodology used combines water and energy assessment through an indicator called Normalized Specific Consumption in Irrigation (C ENI), allowing thus a comparison between equipment and projects. The C ENI in Cruz Alta region showed 72% of the equipment above the standard (8.68 kWh mm-1 ha-1 100m-1), and in Santo Augusto region 64.28% with consumption above the standard. In this paper we present a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the supply and harvest of herbaceous biomass of the Acromyrmex striatus ant at a site in Santa Rosa city, La Pampa province, Argentina (36º28' S 64º35' W). Annual input of green material to the nest was 0,14 kg/year.nest and 0,60 kg/(year.hectare); which is the lowest value reported for species of this genus. In the region studied, Acromyrmex striatus primarily cuts monocotyledonous, harvesting small amounts of all available plants. The presence of Acromyrmex striatus in this semiarid area would not decrease the availability of native grasses preferred by cattle

RESUMO: O estudo objetivou avaliar o consumo voluntário, a digestibilidade aparente e a composição química da forragem de Paspalum atratum capim Pojuca em diferentes idades de rebrotação. O experimento foi desenvolvido na Embrapa Cerrados, Planaltina - DF. A forragem foi cortada correspondendo a idade de rebrotação entre 22 e 28, 29 e 35, 36 e 42 e 43 e 49 dias e, subseqüentemente, fornecida fresca, em gaiolas metabólicas, a dezesseis novilhos de sobreano inteiros, com aproximadamente 240 kg de peso vivo (PV). No Brasil Central, bovinos engordados a pasto apresentam bom desenvolvimento na estação das chuvas (ganhos de peso de 500 a 800 g/dia) e fraco desempenho na época seca, quando ganham pouco peso ou até o perdem, devido à baixa produção das pastagens. Esta sequência de bons e maus desempenhos resultam em avanço na idade de abate dos animais.
