A STUDY ON SUBSTITUTION AND SEQUENCING EFFECTS USING CHECK-OFF MECHANISM AgEcon
Rudra, Bidisha; Keeler, Andrew G.; McIntosh, Christopher S..
Voluntary donations to non-game species protection through state income tax checkoffs are analyzed. An analogy between the contingent valuation method and check-off scheme is drawn by observing the existence of agenda effects in the latter. Results reveal that substitution and sequencing effects exist between species protection and other public goods.

The influence of cultural identity on willingness to pay values in contingent valuation surveys AgEcon
Awatere, Shaun.
Current New Zealand resource management legislation requires local government actively recognise and take into account Māori values in resource management planning. This means the decision process and participants must interact with evidence based on Māori epistemologies. The Māori world-view is holistic in nature in that it embodies historical, environmental, and spiritual values, as well as modern experiences. Concerns arise for Māori communities when planners and developers utilise economic tools such as willingness to pay surveys to determine the total value of a proposed project. Other concerns are caused by surveys that ask a participant “are you Māori” and fail to recognise the diverse realities that exist for Māori. This paper draws from a survey...

Valuing the Cultural Monuments of Armenia: Bayesian Updating of Prior Beliefs in Contingent Valuation AgEcon
Alberini, Anna; Longo, Alberto.
We use contingent valuation to place a value on the conservation of built cultural heritage sites in Armenia. When we present the hypothetical scenario in the questionnaire we spell out what would happen to the monuments in the absence of the government conservation program. We posit that respondents combine such information with their own prior beliefs, which the questionnaire also elicits, and that the WTP for the good or program is likely to be affected by these updated beliefs. We propose a Bayesian updating model of prior beliefs, and empirically implement it using the data from our survey. We find that uncertainty about what would happen to the monument in the absence of the program results in lower WTP amounts. .

Valuing a Clean River: A case study of Musi River, Hyderabad, India AgEcon
Gayathri Devi, Mekala; Samad, Madar; Davidson, Brian; Boland, Anne-Maree.
The current study uses contingent valuation technique to estimate the value of clean water in river Musi in Hyderabad, India. The main source of pollution of the river is untreated domestic and industrial wastewater from the urban area of Hyderabad. Therefore, people’s Willingness To Pay [WTP] for the treatment of their wastewater to different quality levels (Level C, B & A) is estimated using a payment card method. Four variables were considered to influence the willingness to pay - number of years the household lived in Hyderabad; individual perceived importance of controlling water pollution; household income levels and proximity to the river. The results of the logistic regression confirmed that the variables - perceived importance of the...

THE EFFECTS OF CAP REFORM ON THE PERIURBAN AGRICULTURAL AREA IN THE PLAIN OF THE CITY OF ASSISI (CENTRAL ITALY) AgEcon
Torquati, Biancamaria; Giacche, Giulia; Taglioni, Chiara; Musotti, Francesco.
In periurban areas agriculture can assume a multifunctional role that includes landscape conservation, sustainable resource management, biodiversity conservation, leisure activities, and can also maintain adequate conditions in densely populated areas for a safe and habitable environment. This study investigates the effects of the introduction of single farm payment on the periurban agricultural area in the plain of the City of Assisi, an area with a strong landscape value. A survey was carried out to determine: changes in production, changes on farm incomes, structural adjustments, the level of multifunctionality of periurban agriculture. Moreover, a survey of 355 residents was made to assess their willingness to pay for some positive externalities of the...

Empirical Evidence Showing The Relationships Between Three Approaches For Pollution Control AgEcon
Wilson, Clevo.
Willingness to pay models have shown the theoretical relationships between the contingent valuation, cost of illness and the avertive behaviour approaches. In this paper, field survey data are used to compare the relationships between these three approaches and to demonstrate that contingent valuation bids exceed the sum of cost of illness and the avertive behaviour approach estimates. The estimates provide a validity check for CV bids and further support the claim that contingent valuation studies are theoretically consistent.

Estudio de las preferencias por los elementos agrarios del paisaje mediante los metodos del analisis conjunto y valoracion contingente AgEcon
Sayadi, Samir; Roa, Maria Carmen Gonzalez; Calatrava-Requena, Javier.

Consumers Willingness to Pay to Avoid Transgenic Products AgEcon
Ribeiro, Francis Lee; de Noronha, Jose Ferreira; Noronha, Cassia Maria Silva.
The debate on transgenic, which is embebed in asymmetrical information, has as a focal point, the risks and uncertainties to them associated. Many are the concerns and questions about the risks for the human health and the environment. Considering the interests of the productive sector in the transgenic technology, the matter sets itself in terms of how fast it wants to be settled taking into consideration the incapability of establishing certainties about the damages or benefits within the process. With the recent liberation by the Brazilian government for its production the sector starts showing segmentation. Therefore, this issue reflects in the market itself. The question is: are the consumers willing to buy transgenic? As an attempt to answer this...

Loving Cultural Heritage. Private Individual Giving and Prosocial Behavior AgEcon
Bertacchini, Enrico; Santagata, Walter; Signorello, Giovanni.
The aim of this paper is to analyse patterns of private individual giving to Cultural Heritage institutions in Italy. Based on the emerging economic literature on pro-social behavior, we carried out a Contingent Valuation survey to assess individuals’ willingness to donate to museums and heritage organizations according to different conditions and set of incentives. Our findings reveal that intrinsic motivations and accountability of the recipient institutions may be more effective drivers for eliciting charitable giving than the usually proposed fiscal incentives. The results provide avenues for future empirical research and policy suggestions for fund raising cultural institutions.

Assessing Public Preferences and Holistic Economic Value of Multifunctional Agriculture in the U.S. AgEcon
Moon, Wanki; Griffith, Wayne.
This study used the contingent valuation method to shed light on public preferences on the multifunctional roles of the U.S. agriculture and to present a holistic estimate of the economic value of the nonmarket goods and services of the U.S. agriculture. Fishbein’s model of reasoned behavior and mediation hypothesis were combined to model the relationship between WTP (behavioral intentions) and sets of explanatory variables including attitudes, perceived attributes (about family farms, farmland preservation programs, government involvement in agricultural markets, and ecological state of our world), and socio-demographic profiles. The estimated mean WTP was $515 per taxpayer annually. Aggregating individual WTPs across the U.S. taxpayers above 20 years...

Effect of changes in the institutional structure of irrigation water property rights on the willingness to pay of farmers for water: case of Tunisia AgEcon
Frija, Aymen; Chebil, Ali; Speelman, Stijn; Van Huylenbroeck, Guido.
This paper assesses the economic value of changes in the attributes of farmers’ irrigation water property rights in Tunisia. Changes on attributes generated by the transfer process of the property rights from the collective to the individual level in addition to changes in “constitutional” attributes were integrated into three scenarios. The valuation was conducted using the Contingent Valuation Method through the elicitation of individuals’ willingness to pay. Results show positive willingness to pay values for all scenarios. However, farmers of the studied region are shown willing to pay more for changes in the constitutional attributes. Furthermore their willingness to pay appears to be most affected by their perceptions concerning the organization and...

The State Contingent Approach to Farmers' Valuation and Adoption of New Biotech Crops: Nitrogen-Fertilizer Saving and Drought Tolerance Traits AgEcon
Jaramillo, Paul E.; Useche, Pilar; Barham, Bradford L.; Foltz, Jeremy D..
We used a state contingent approach to give a detailed analysis of the uncertainty surrounding seed trait adoption. Our framework emphasizes the role of timing and information in farmers’ adoption decisions. The inherent embeddedness of seed traits results in timing restrictions and the inability of post-planting adjustments, this in turn results in farmers necessarily engaging in a game with nature. Two main types of traits we identify are supplementing traits and stabilizing traits – classification into each category is directly related on the mobility of the production factor the trait intends to substitute. Supplementing traits allow for acting after nature (i.e., ex post) while stabilizing traits are better modeled as acting before nature (i.e., ex...

What is the Value of Hazardous Weather Forecasts? Evidence from a Survey of Backcountry Skiers AgEcon
Alberini, Anna; Rheinberger, Christoph M.; Leiter, Andrea M.; McCormick, Charles A.; Mizrahi, Andrew.
What is the value of hazardous weather warnings? To answer this question, we focus on the avalanche bulletin for Switzerland issued by the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF). We take a survey-based, non-market valuation approach to estimating the value of hypothetical improvements in avalanche forecasting. We focus on backcountry skiers because (i) safety is arguably the most important type of benefit associated with the avalanche bulletin, (ii) they voluntarily undertake risks, and (iii) they perceive themselves and are generally perceived by others as skilled in avoiding risks. The respondents’ willingness to pay (WTP) for the improved services ranges between CHF 42 to 46, implying a mean value of statistical life (VSL) of CHF 1.75...
