Numerous studies have compared the rates of primary production using various techniques at specific locations and times. However, these comparisons are local and cannot be used to compare or scale rates of primary production using different methods across ocean basins or seasonal time scales. Here, we quantify the range in rates of primary production derived using different techniques and provide equations that allow conversions of estimates between different methods. We do so on the basis of a compilation of data on volumetric estimates of primary production rates concurrently estimated with at least two different methods. We observed that the comparison of estimates of marine phytoplankton primary production derived from different methods reveals very... |

The conversion to organic farming has proven to be an economically interesting alternative for a large portion of the converted farms in the past. This contribution will consider the question of which factors influence the success of organic farming. The basis for the study is a series of data taken from the converting farms themselves as well as data of the farm accountancy data network. The success of conversion is measured by the profit difference in comparison to a conventional reference group, while the absolute performance of the organic farm is assessed classically on the basis of the profit per family work unit. The results show that the successful farms are more likely to be arable farms. Successful organic farms tend to produce in a more... |

Until now, organic farming in Austria saw its largest growth in the period between 1994 and 1998. The following factors all contributed to Austria achieving the highest percentage of organic farms in Europe: the early addition of guidelines for organic crop production and animal husbandry to the Austrian Codex Alimentarius, the government support for organic farms during and after conversion through compensatory payments, favourable market conditions through the entrance of supermarket chains, the establishment of a marketing company, an active policy by the organic associations and the development of advisory services. However, this dynamic development has not persisted in the late nineties. Whether the crises in conventional production will provide... |

In a conversion efficiency study, 10 sawmills were selected out of the existing 44 in Abeokuta metropolis. For 5 days per week in each of the 10 sampled sawmills, the volumes of all the round logs to be converted each day were determined using Newton’s formula. At the end of the days work, the volumes of all lumbers converted were determined and were subtracted from those obtained in the morning, whatever is obtained was the volumes of wood wastes generated in each of the sampled sawmills. This study revealed that the mean conversion efficiency of the 10 selected mills was 56.05%. As a result, the total volume of wood waste generated per day by the 10 mills was approximately 52.00m3. In the entire Abeokuta metropolis 2288m3 of wood wastes will be generated... |

An experiment with 630 one-day-old chicks experimentally inoculated with Salmonella Typhimurium was performed to evaluate the effects of an organic acid blend (benzoic, fumaric and 2-hydroxi-4-methylltio-butanoic - HMTBa) on intestinal health and performance. The experimental challenge with Salmonella Typhimurium occurred in two different routes of administration: via crop on the first day after hatching, and via feed, offered from seven to 14 days of age. These groups were treated with organic acids in a 3 × 2 (agent versus acid) factorial arrangement. Chicks treated with organic acids had higher weight gain, mean live weight and better feed conversion at 14 days of age, and higher weight gain at 28 days of age. Chicks treated with organic acids... |
