Under the typical high-latitude conditions of temperature, productivity and settlement of chlorophyll and phaeophytin to the sediment, many benthic organisms in the Antarctic show strong seasonal variation. Although meiofauna comprise an important component of the southpolar benthic ecosystem, our knowledge of them is limited. The metazoan meiofauna and the surrounding sediments were studied fortnightly for 18 mo in a shallow bay at Signy Island (Factory Cove, South Orkneys, Antarctica) to test whether and how the temporal variability of the environment influenced meiobenthos dynamics. By examination of the distribution of the abundance and biomass of the total community, the density of higher taxonomic groups, and of individual dominant nematode genera... |

Although estuarine zooplankters are generally believed to be detritivorous, high clearance rates by the estuarine copepods <i>Eurytemora affinis</i> and <i>Acartia tonsa</i> on natural estuarine microplankton have been reported in the literature. In order to enable detection of possible selectivity for these microplankton organisms over detritus, a method that measures clearance rates on total particulate matter is proposed. Image analysis is used to measure copepod gut contents, and combined with Coulter counter measurements of total particulate matter concentration, allows one to calculate clearance rates on the latter. The first results indicate that, in the Westerschelde estuary (SW Netherlands), both <i>E.... |

Published studies on the demography and reproductive strategies of harpacticoid copepods are examined critically. At the technical level, the popular approximation <i>r</i> = ln R0/Tc is shown to be inappropriate as an estimate of the intrinsic rate of increase of harpacticoids. It leads to a systematic underestimation, by 8-29%, for life histories typical of fast-breeding species. Various <i>ad hoc</i> variants of <i>r</i> and <i>R0</i> calculations occurring in the literature are also criticized. At the conceptual level, a more discriminating approach to life-history characteristics is necessary; this applies both to the assessment of... |

The predictability of temporal changes was analysed in the population density of three meiobenthic copepod species, and for three parameters characterizing this community. For <i>Paranychocamptus nanus</i> and <i>Tachidius discipes</i> a large part of the variation in time scales longer than 1 year is explainable as cyclic factors. In <i>P. nanus</i> clear cycles with periods of 2 years and 1.5 years were found. These cyclic factors can be extrapolated for prediction. In <i>Canuella perplexa</i> almost all the variation was due to unpredictable long-term drift. Community parameters are generally better predicted than population densities. In our data set total density of the copepods was the best parameter to... |

The dependency of respiration rate on body weight at 20°C was determined for five meiobenthic copepods from a brackish-water habitat. The respiration rate of the four smaller species was generally high, = 10-14 nl O2.h-1.µg dry wt-1, but was much lower for larger species, <i>Canuella perplexa</i> T. & A. Scott 1893 (2-3 nl O2.h-1.µg1). This pattern is discussed in terms of the adaptive behaviour of the populations. The significance of respiration rates in the evolution of populations is illustrated by differences between the respiration rates of Belgian <i>Tachidius discipes</i> Giesbrecht... |
