EVALUATION OF Azospirillum brasilense DOSE RESPONSE ON FRESH AND DRY MATTER OF SHOOT AND ROOT OF CORN PLANTS 196
do Amaral Júnior, Wellington Elias; Rodrigues Esteves, Flávia; Pereira de Menezes Filho, Antonio Carlos; Abadia Ventura, Matheus Vinicius.
Zea mays (corn) is one of the leading crops focused on producing food and feed for humans and animals. The use of diazotrophic bacteria such as Azospirillum brasilense demonstrates a positive effect on nitrogen availability, a primordial element for the development of this plant. This study aimed to evaluate the gain of the fresh and dry matter of shoots and roots in a corn cultivar inoculated with A. brasilense at different doses. The experiment was carried out in pots containing soil. The corn seeds, cultivar Agroceres® 5055, were inoculated with A. brasilense at doses between 100 to 250 mL 20 kg-1. It was observed that inoculation with A. brasilense positively affected fresh and dry matter gain of both shoot and roots between doses of 100-200 mL 20 kg-1...

Light interception, leaf area and biomass production as a function of the density of maize plants analyzed using mathematical models Agronomy
Portes, Tomás Aquino; Melo, Hyrandir Cabral de.
Mathematical models were tested to correlate the leaf area index (LAI) of maize to the percentage of light intercepted by the canopy (% LIC) and this with the total dry matter of aerial parts (TDM), as well with the grain yield (GY). The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, with four replications. The treatments consisted of hybrid maize at five plant densities: 4.0, 2.66, 2.0, 1.6, and 1.3 plants per m2 (pl m-2). At densities of 4.0 and 2.66 pl m-2, the average LAI and TDM did not differ among themselves but were significantly higher than those presented at the densities of 2.0, 1.66 and 1.3 pl m-2, which also did not differ among themselves. The number of corncobs per plant (cob pl-1) and GY behaved similarly. The LAI grew exponentially...

Sobowale, Sunday; Omotoso, Oluwole; Olatidoye, Olawale; Olayanju, Adeniyi; Mulaba-Bafubiandi, Antoine.
The economic situation in most developing countries has left farmers and processors operating at small scale and under unhygienic environment. The productivity is often too low to justify labor and time investment. With respect to the challenges particularly associated with roasting of corn, a roaster was designed, constructed and its performance evaluated. The mechanized charcoal fuelled corn roaster consists of a frame, roasting unit, charcoal tray, air blowing unit and a power transmission system. The functional efficiency of the machine at different roasting temperatures of 100, 130 and 150 oC ranged between 88 and 94%, while the roasting capacity and roasting time ranged between 40 and 54 fresh corns per hour in 22 and 30 min, respectively. The...

Comparison of thin-layer chromatography, spectrofluorimetry and bright greenish-yellow fluorescence test for aflatoxin detection in corn BABT
Ono,Elisabete Yurie Sataque; Silva,Marcelo da; Ribeiro,Ricardo Marcelo Reche; Ono,Mario Augusto; Hayashi,Luciana; Garcia,Glauco Tironi; Hirooka,Elisa Yoko.
In this study the bright greenish-yellow fluorescence test, widely used by the corn milling industry, was compared to the thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and spectrofluorimetry methods for aflatoxin detection in 40 corn samples naturally contaminated by the Aspergillus section Flavi. According to the corn processing industry criteria, all the samples were adequate for human and animal consumption by the bright greenish-yellow fluorescence test, but TLC and spectrofluorimetry analysis detected aflatoxins above the maximum tolerated limit (20 µg/kg) in 7 and 8 samples, respectively. Aflatoxins were detected in 16 (40%) corn samples by TLC, with levels ranging from 4.0 to 54.0 µg/kg (mean 19.97 ± 15.97 µg/kg), and in 25 (62.5%) samples by spectrofluorimetry,...

Occurrence of zearalenone in wheat- and corn-based products commercialized in the State of Paraná, Brazil BJM
Almeida-Ferreira,Giovanna Caputo; Barbosa-Tessmann,Ione Parra; Sega,Rose; Machinski Junior,Miguel.
The productivity of wheat and corn crops depends on climatic conditions and resistance against phytopathogenic fungi such as those of the genus Fusarium. Some species of this genus produce zearalenone (ZEA), a mycotoxin with hyperestrogenic effects. The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of ZEA in samples of cracked wheat (n = 109), popcorn (n = 51) and corn grits (n = 50) commercialized in the State of Paraná, Brazil. Commercial samples of each crop were collected between September 2007 and June 2008 and analyzed by thin-layer chromatography. The method used for detection of the mycotoxin in wheat and corn derivatives presented a recovery rate of 94.5% and 99.5%, respectively, detection limit of 40 μg.kg-1 and quantification limit of...

Sampling plan for the analysis of aflatoxin in peanuts and corn: an update BJM
Fonseca,Homero.
The aim of this paper was to update the sampling plan for analysis of mycotoxins in grains, formerly published by the author. The proposed alterations were based on the acquired experience on its application and on FAO recommendations. This update restricts the scope of the former plan and establishes a sampling plan for analysis of aflatoxin in peanuts and corn, by means of modified formulas, the minimum number of sacks or points (when in bulk) from which incremental samples should be drawn to make a bulk sample. Fractional exponents (square roots) of the formulas proportionally decrease the number of sacks/points to be sampled as the lot size increases. Operating Characteristic (OC) curves developed for in-shell and shelled peanuts and corn as well as...

Distribution of aflatoxins in contaminated corn fractions segregated by size BJM
Piedade,Fabiana S.; Fonseca,Homero; Glória,Eduardo M.; Calori-Domingues,Antonia; Piedade,Sônia M.S.; Barbin,Décio.
The efficiency of segregation, by particle size, in reducing the aflatoxin content of corn lots under the Brazilian conditions was studied. The aflatoxin content, in the corn fractions obtained after sieving thirty contaminated samples, with approximately 3.0 kg each, was determined. The samples were passed through 4.5 mm round-hole sieves and the fractions with particles ³4.5 mm (fraction A) and <4.5 mm (fraction B) and then analyzed for aflatoxins by TLC. The results showed that the distribution of the aflatoxins among the fractions A and B varied from sample to sample. However, the fraction B presented higher content (6 to 1,422 µg/kg) of aflatoxins (P<5%), than samples of fraction A (4 to 389 µg/kg). In spite of that the segregation of this...
