From seasonal patterns to a reference situation in an estuarine environment: Example of the small fish and shrimp fauna of the Gironde estuary (SW France) ArchiMer
Lobry, Jeremy; Lepage, Mario; Rochard, Eric.
Detecting changes in animal communities suggests that a reference situation exists. It is a particularly difficult task in estuarine environments that are complex and fluctuate with time. Effects of human pressures are difficult to assess due to the scarcity or even the lack of evaluation and monitoring systems. In order to detect anomalies in the functioning of the system and to identify effects of perturbations upon populations and communities, it is necessary to analyse the dynamics in order to infer a reference state. This work aims to describe an approach based on K-Tab analyses and allows to define an average situation called "compromise" which is then compared to a single year of data. In this situation, the Gironde estuary, which has been monitored...

Stability of spatial structures of demersal assemblages: a multitable approach ArchiMer
Gaertner, Jean-claude; Chessel, Daniel; Bertrand, Jacques.
The present work is based on a set of bottom trawl surveys performed in the Gulf of Lions between 1983 and 1992. A new method which couples the STATIS multitable approach with the logic of correspondence analysis (CoA) is proposed to study the stability of spatial organization of demersal assemblages in terms of species composition. This CoA version of STATIS has provided a clear representation of the stable part of the spatial structure of the assemblages. In addition, it gave an insight into the interannual variations of the distribution of each population around the reference structure. Our results showed that the demersal assemblages of the Gulf of Lions exhibited strong spatial structuring, mainly orientated along a bathymetric gradient. This gradient...

Succession saisonnière des populations phytoplanctoniques des eaux côtières de la Manche ArchiMer
Ryckaert, Mireille; Gros, Philippe; Erard-le Denn, Evelyne.
Quantitative microphytoplankton samples were collected from shallow-water coastal stations in Channel between 1976 and 1980. The aim of the study is to describe the seasonal succession of the populations with respect to some physico-chemical parameters, i. e. to relatate the distribution of abundance to hydrographic seasons. We build a contigency table (species x environmental variables, both under disjunctive coding), which is described by correspondence analysis (reciprocal averaging). The results show the main features of the annual changes in the community dominated by diatoms

Intensive rearing of juvenile oysters Crassostrea gigas in an upwelling system : optimization of biological production ArchiMer
Bacher, Cedric; Baud, Jean-pierre.
Seasonal growth of juvenile oysters (Crassostrea gigas) kept in an intensive upwelling system was studied from 1984 to 1986 in 60 to 90-day growth experiments. Saline ground water was used to produce Skeletonema costatum which was injected as food into the water supplying the upwelling system. Oyster density, water flow, phytoplankton concentration, temperature and frequency of food addition were controlled. Oyster growth was analysed with multidimensional contingency tables and correspondence analysis. The factors, in order of decreasing influence on growth, were temperature, food concentration and oyster density. A rearing strategy was deduced from the growth analysis for summer and winter. In summer, the density of 120,000 oysters/m2, the flow rate of...

Aérosols côtiers dans le nord de la Manche ArchiMer
Flament, P; Lepretre, A; Noel, S; Auger, Y.

ESTRUTURA DO MERCADO DE TRABALHO AGRÍCOLA NO BRASIL: UMA ANALISE DESCRITIVA DA EVOLUÇÃO DE SUAS CATEGORIAS ENTRE 1995 E 2006 AgEcon
Neder, Henrique Dantas.

A Continuum of Consumer Attitudes Toward Genetically Modified Foods in the United States AgEcon
Ganiere, Pierre; Chern, Wen S.; Hahn, David E..
A national telephone survey was conducted in the United States in April 2002 to study the consumer acceptance of genetically modified (GM) foods. Attitudes toward GM foods were examined through the use of a multiple correspondence analysis (MCA), analyzing the interrelationships among many categorical variables. This method was combined with a cluster analysis to construct a typology of consumers' attitudes. Four distinct classes of attitudes were finally extracted, denoted as: Proponents, Non-Opponents, Moderate Opponents, and Extreme Opponents. It was estimated that only 35% of the surveyed population was opposed to GM foods.

Epidemiological characterization and risk evaluation associated with the presence of Phthiraptera in poultry farms from Minas Gerais, Brazil Biological Sciences
Oliveira, Tiago Mendonça de; Teixeira, Cristina Mara; Pinto, Mariana Olímpia Köhler Marra; Arcebispo, Thiago Luiz Mendes; Soriano-Araújo, Amanda; Cunha, Lucas Maciel; Diniz, Soraia Araújo; Silva, Marcos Xavier.
Phthiraptera are lice highly adapted to living as permanent and obligatory ectoparasites of birds and mammals. High infestations by biting lice contribute to the low productivity, loss quality of the eggs, besides weight decrease of chickens. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate and to characterize the risks involved with the presence of biting lice in laying chicken from Minas Gerais, Brazil, throught a Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA). A secondary database with information regarding 402 chicken houses from 42 properties of laying hens from the same region was used and adapted for this study. The variables that composed the correspondence model were selected through Chi-square tests (p ≤ 0.05). A risk index was designed to relate the presence of...
