Seed structure and initial development of Byrsonima basiloba Juss. (Malpighiaceae) 73
Dos Santos Silveira,Conceição Eneida; Palhares,Dario; Barros,Karina; Pereira,Damasceno; Gomes Luís,Zanderluce; Rodrigues Pereira,Luiz Alfredo.
ABSTRACT Byrsonima basiloba Juss. is a fast growing shrub that produces edible and juicy fruits. This research studied the morphology and anatomy of seeds and seedlings. The hard endocarp was crested and triloculate, with one seed per locule. B. basiloba seed was composed of a testa and a tegmen with residual endosperm. The embryo was ivory, with long, foliaceous, circinate, anisophyllous cotyledons with disjointed apices. The embryonary axis was short, straight and occupied a small portion of the seed with short epicotyl, and radicle with a rudimentary root cap. In the seedlings, it was possible to differentiate the protoderm, procambium and ground meristem in the elongation zone. The differentiation process in this species occurred early in the embryo....

Multiple forms of cotyledonary b-galactosidases from Vigna unguiculata quiescent seeds 88
ENÉAS-FILHO,JOAQUIM; SUDÉRIO,FABRÍCIO BONFIM; GOMES-FILHO,ENÉAS; PRISCO,JOSÉ TARQUÍNIO.
Cotyledonary b-galactosidases were isolated and partially purified from Pitiúba cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) quiescent seeds. The purification steps consisted of precipitation of the crude extract with ammonium sulphate in the range of 20-60% saturation, acid precipitation, DEAE-Sephadex ion-exchange chromatography and Lactosyl-Sepharose affinity chromatography. This purification process gave rise to three b-galactosidases-rich fractions: b-gal I, b-gal II and b-gal III, which were purified about 5, 509, and 62 fold, respectively. They reached maximal enzyme activity at different pH ranges: 3.5-4.5 for b-gal I, 3.0-3.5 for b-gal II, and 3.0-4.0 for b-gal III. Their maximal activities were reached when the temperature of the assay medium was 60° C,...

Isolation and partial purification of beta-galactosidases from cotyledons of two cowpea cultivars 93
ENÉAS-FILHO,JOAQUIM; BARBOSA,GISLAINY KARLA DA COSTA; SUDÉRIO,FABRÍCIO BONFIM; PRISCO,JOSÉ TARQUÍNIO; GOMES-FILHO,ENÉAS.
Three isoforms of beta-galactosidases were isolated and partially purified from the cotyledons of quiescent seeds of Vita 3 and Vita 5 cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] cultivars differing in water and salt stress tolerance. The purification procedure consisted of ammonium sulfate fractionation, acid precipitation, ion exchange chromatography through DEAE-sephadex and affinity chromatography through Lactosyl-sepharose columns. The three isoforms isolated from the two cultivars showed the same chromatographic patterns, same optimum of temperature for enzyme activity assay (60ºC), identical thermal stability up to 50°C, and similar pH optima (3-4). However, they differed from each other in sensitivity towards metal ions and certain chemical agents...

Chamaesyce prostrata (Aiton) Small, Euphorbia heterophylla L. and Euphorbia graminea Jacq. are weedy species that occur with relative frequency in the region of Maringá, Paraná State, Brazil. Data about the morphology and anatomy of seedlings of these species were obtained, with emphasis on significant structural differences of seedlings between species of Euphorbia and Chamaesyce. Seedlings are phanerocotylar and epigeal. Root is axial and triarch. Cotyledons are leaf-like and dorsiventral. Eophylls and prophylls are simple and dorsiventral. Morphological variations occur in the cotyledon shape of Euphorbia seedlings. It is remarkable the Kranz structure of leaves that occurs only in Chamaesyce.

Effect of atmospheric CO2 enrichment on the establishment of seedlings of Jatobá, Hymenaea Courbaril L. (Leguminosae, Caesalpinioideae) 49
Aidar,M.P.M.; Martinez,C.A.; Costa,A.C.; Costa,P.M.F.; Dietrich,S.M.C.; Buckeridge,M.S..
Plants grown in elevated CO2 environments may exhibit photosynthetic acclimation or down regulation, which is characterised by reduced rates of photosynthesis. In most cases of CO2-induced photosynthetic acclimation, the reduced rates of photosynthesis were still higher than those detected in plants growing at ambient CO2 concentrations. In this work we present a study on the behaviour of seedlings of Hymenaea courbaril, a late secondary/climax species that is one of the most important trees in mature tropical forests of the Americas. After germination, the seedling of H. courbaril increases its rate of growth due to the mobilisation of massive amounts of a storage cell wall polysaccharide (xyloglucan) from its cotyledons. In our experiments, germinated...

Effects of fatty acids on carbohydrates and lipids of canola seeds during germination 52
Ferrarese,M. L. L.; Baleroni,C. R. S.; Ferrarese-Filho,O..
The present work was carried out to investigate the effects of caprylic acid (C8) and oleic acid (C18) on carbohydrates and lipids during canola seed germination. The results showed that oleic acid influence carbohydrate concentration but did not influence lipid concentration. Significant results were found with caprylic acid that affected carbohydrates and lipids in cotyledons after three-day germination.
