Brassica vegetable leaf residues as promising biofumigants for the control of root knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita infecting cowpea CIGR Journal
El-Nagdi, wafaa M.A.; Youssef, Mahmoud M.A..
Abstract:  Under screenhouse conditions , two mashed leaves of plants belonging to the genus Brassica, cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. Capitata L.) and kohlrabi (Brassica caulorapa   L.) were used as pre-and at sowing biofumigants at 20g/pot for managing root knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita on cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp)compared to metam potassium and metam sodium as chemical biofumigants as well as untreated check. It was found that, in general, there was a positive correlation between the time of the addition of the plant residue (10 and 5 days before sowing and at sowing time) and the percentage final nematode population reduction i.e., the highest percentages final nematode reduction (70.4 and 82.1%) occurred when Brassica oleracea and...

Population dynamics of Aphis gossypii Glover and in sole and intercropping systems of cotton and cowpea Anais da ABC (AABC)
FERNANDES,FRANCISCO S.; GODOY,WESLEY A.C.; RAMALHO,FRANCISCO S.; GARCIA,ADRIANO G.; SANTOS,BÁRBARA D.B.; MALAQUIAS,JOSÉ B..
ABSTRACT Population dynamics of aphids have been studied in sole and intercropping systems. These studies have required the use of more precise analytical tools in order to better understand patterns in quantitative data. Mathematical models are among the most important tools to explain the dynamics of insect populations. This study investigated the population dynamics of aphids Aphis gossypii and Aphis craccivora over time, using mathematical models composed of a set of differential equations as a helpful analytical tool to understand the population dynamics of aphids in arrangements of cotton and cowpea. The treatments were sole cotton, sole cowpea, and three arrangements of cotton intercropped with cowpea (t1, t2 and t3). The plants were infested with...

The behavior of Aphis gossypii and Aphis craccivora (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and of their predator Cycloneda sanguinea (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in cotton-cowpea intercropping systems Anais da ABC (AABC)
FERNANDES,FRANCISCO S.; GODOY,WESLEY A.C.; RAMALHO,FRANCISCO S.; MALAQUIAS,JOSÉ B.; SANTOS,BÁRBARA D.B..
ABSTRACT The intercropping is an important cultural practice commonly used in pest management. It is based on the principle that increased plant diversity in the agro-ecosystem can lead to reductions of pest populations in the crop. The current study aimed to assess the impact the colored fiber cotton-cowpea intercropped systems on Aphis gossypii and Aphis craccivora and on their predator Cycloneda sanguinea and the losses and the dispersion behavior of these aphids and their predator in these cropping systems. The experiment had a randomized block experimental design with two bioassays and four treatments. The number of apterous and alate aphids (A. gossypii) per cotton plant was 1.46 and 1.73 or 1.97 and 2.19 times highest in the solid cotton system than...

Insecticidal activity of 2-tridecanone against the cowpea weevil Callosobruchus maculatus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Braga,Yussef F.B.; Grangeiro,Thalles B.; Freire,Eder A.; Lopes,Helano L.; Bezerra,José N. S.; Andrade-Neto,Manoel; Lima,Mary Anne S..
The effect of 2-tridecanone vapor on the cowpea weevil (Callosobruchus maculatus) development was determined. Seeds of cowpea were infested with adults and exposed to different doses of 2-tridecanone isolated from Pilocarpus microphyllus Stapf ex Holm, a plant species native from northeastern Brazil. The pure monoterpene was evaluated both undiluted as well as in the dilutions 1:10, 1:100 and 1:1,000 (v/v). The following parameters of the cowpea weevil life cycle were analyzed in response to decreasing doses of 2-tridecanone: number of eggs laid, percentage of egg hatching on seeds, percentage of adult emergence, adult weight at emergence, mean developmental time and number of adults emerged. Vapor of 2-tridecanone caused a significant (P < 0.05)...

Cowpea Vicilins: Fractionation of Urea Denatured Sub-Units and Effects on Callosobruchus maculatus F. (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) Development BABT
Mota,Antônio Chagas; Fernandes,Kátia Valevski Sales; Sales,Maurício Pereira; Flores,Victor Martin Quintana; Xavier-Filho,José.
Vicilins (7S storage globulins) isolated from cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) seeds which were susceptible (S) and resistant (R) to the cowpea weevil (Callosobruchus maculatus F., Coleoptera: Bruchidae) were denatured by urea and fractionated by ion-exchange chromatography. Isolated fractions were incorporated in artificial seeds for assessment of their toxicity to C. maculatus. The most acidic fractions of both susceptible (CE-31 cultivar) and resistant (IT81D-1045 line) seeds were shown to affect development and survival of the bruchid. Results indicated that vicilin polypeptides of toxic nature were expressed in both types of storage globulins although at different levels.

A protein with amino acid sequence homology to bovine insulin is present in the legume Vigna unguiculata (cowpea) BJMBR
Venâncio,T.M.; Oliveira,A.E.A.; Silva,L.B.; Machado,O.L.T.; Fernandes,K.V.S.; Xavier-Filho,J..
Since the discovery of bovine insulin in plants, much effort has been devoted to the characterization of these proteins and elucidation of their functions. We report here the isolation of a protein with similar molecular mass and same amino acid sequence to bovine insulin from developing fruits of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) genotype Epace 10. Insulin was measured by ELISA using an anti-human insulin antibody and was detected both in empty pods and seed coats but not in the embryo. The highest concentrations (about 0.5 ng/µg of protein) of the protein were detected in seed coats at 16 and 18 days after pollination, and the values were 1.6 to 4.0 times higher than those found for isolated pods tested on any day. N-terminal amino acid sequencing of insulin...

Rhizobia amylase production using various starchy substances as carbon substrates BJM
Oliveira,Arlem Nascimento de; Oliveira,Luiz Antonio de; Andrade,Jerusa Sousa; Chagas Júnior,Aloisio Freitas.
Six isolates of indigenous rhizobia of Central Amazonia were screened for the production of amylases in liquid media using various starchy substances as carbon sources. All rhizobia strains could produce more extracellular protein, biomass and amylases with the different kinds of carbon substrates. Among the carbon sources tested maltose was the best substrate for protein and amylase production. In general, peach palm flour and corn starch (maizena®) were also considered to be good carbon sources for rhizobia amylases. On the other hand, the biomass production by the rhizobia isolates was higher in the presence of oat flour. INPA strain R-926 was a good amylase producer in maltose (1.94 U) and corn starch (0.53 U) media. INPA strain R-991 was also a good...

Zilli,Jerri Édson; Valisheski,Romano Roberto; Freire Filho,Francisco Rodrigues; Neves,Maria Cristina Prata; Rumjanek,Norma Gouvêa.
In order to contribute for the optimization of biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) associated with cowpea in Cerrado areas in the Northeast region of Brazil, this work aimed to analyze the diversity of rhizobial populations in eight areas of Cerrado, during a soybean and rice-cowpea rotation. Morphological traits (mucous production and colony morphology), genotypic analyzes (ARDRA 16S) and intrinsic resistance to antibiotics were determined for a collection of isolates captured using cowpea as a host-plant. The morphological data showed a inverse correlation (p < 0.05) between the number of legume (soybean and cowpea) crops, according to the history of each area, and rhizobium diversity, estimated by the Shannon-Weaver index. ARDRA data showed that...

Simões-Araújo,Jean Luiz; Rumjanek,Norma Gouvêa; Xavier,Gustavo Ribeiro; Zilli,Jerri Édson.
ABSTRACT The strain BR 3351T (Bradyrhizobium manausense) was obtained from nodules of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp) growing in soil collected from Amazon rainforest. Furthermore, it was observed that the strain has high capacity to fix nitrogen symbiotically in symbioses with cowpea. We report here the draft genome sequence of strain BR 3351T. The information presented will be important for comparative analysis of nodulation and nitrogen fixation for diazotrophic bacteria. A draft genome with 9,145,311 bp and 62.9% of GC content was assembled in 127 scaffolds using 100 bp pair-end Illumina MiSeq system. The RAST annotation identified 8603 coding sequences, 51 RNAs genes, classified in 504 subsystems.

Chill-induced changes in fatty acid composition of tonoplast vesicles from hypocotyls of Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Oliveira,Luciana M. N. de; Sobreira,Alana C. de M.; Monteiro,Fernando de P.; Melo,Dirce F. de.
The present study was undertaken to investigate the changes induced by chilling on fatty acid composition of tonoplast vesicles from hypocotyls of Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. The 7 day-old control seedlings were grown at 25°C while treated seedlings were submitted to low temperatures (10°C and 4°C) for 4 days after 3 days germination. The chilling stress resulted in a differential inhibition of plant growth at 10°C and 4°C. Following chilling at 10°C and 4°C, the rate of unsaturated to saturated fatty acids increased under chilling stress. Our results suggest that the increase of unsaturated fatty acids content as well as the higher rate unsaturated/saturate fatty acidsmight be used by V. unguiculata plants as an adaptation mechanism likely to maintain...

Purification and characterization of cytosolic and cell wall β-galactosidases from Vigna unguiculata stems Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Sudério,Fabrício Bonfim; Barbosa,Gislainy Karla da Costa; Gomes-Filho,Enéas; Enéas-Filho,Joaquim.
Three β-galactosidase isoforms, β-gal I and β-gal II (cytosolic) and β-gal III (cell wall-associated), were isolated from stems of Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. cv. Pitiúba seedlings. Purification consisted of aμMonia sulfate fractionation followed by chromatography in DEAE-Sephadex and Lactosyl-Sepharose columns. The two cytosolic isoforms showed the same chromatography pattern, which differed from that of β-gal III. Electrophoresis revealed a single band of protein for β-gal II and β-gal III which also expressed β-galactosidase activity in gel. The apparent molecular mass of the β-gal I, II and III was 89, 146 and 124 kDa, respectively. The three isoforms revealed the same optimal pH (4.0) and the same optimal assay temperature (55ºC) for enzyme activity....
