Species interactions between forbs and grass-clover contribute to yield gains and weed suppression in forage grassland mixtures Organic Eprints
Cong, W.-F.; Suter, M.; Lüscher, A.; Eriksen, J..
Grass-legume mixtures characterized by high productivity, efficient nitrogen (N) use and strong weed suppression were proposed to increase sustainability of grassland production. Adding competitive forbs to grassclover mixtures can be expected to further enhance the high productivity of grass-clover mixtures. This study investigates whether and to what extent adding forbs to a grass-clover mixture results in yield gains, and estimates the contributions of forb species (identity effect) and interactions with the grass-clover mixture (diversity effect) to these gains. It further examines the effectiveness of weed suppression in forb-containing grass-clover mixtures. Fifteen pure and mixed stands, all comprising the grass Lolium perenne L. and the legume...

Wirkung verschiedener Leguminosen als Untersaat im Vergleich zur Stoppelsaat auf Ertrag und Qualität der Deckfrucht Winterroggen und der Folgefrucht Hafer Organic Eprints
Urbatzka, Peer; Cais, Kathrin; Salzeder, Georg; Wiesinger, Klaus.
Leguminous cover crops are one important source of nitrogen in organic stockless farming. Therefore the influence of six legume species in pure stands and one grass-clover mixture on grain yield and quality of the undersown winter rye and of the succeeding crop spring oat was examined. Three field trials were conducted at one experimental site in southern Bavaria (2005/06/07 until 2007/08/09; in 2005/06/07 only three of six leguminous undersowings). Additionally, after the harvest of rye two stubble seeds (clover in pure and mixed stands with vetch and mustard) and a control (rye without cover crop) were established in each year. The cash crop was not affected by the undersown variants with respect to grain yield and quality. However, grain yield of the...

Conversion to Organic Production Software (OrgPlan, OF0159) Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne.
This is the final report for Defra Project OF0159. The Organic Conversion Planner (OrgPlan) is a computer program for farmers and advisors reducing the time input necessary for planning a conversion to organic farming. Conversion planning can help to identify whether organic management is suited to the farm and potential problems during the conversion period itself. This involves an assessment of the current situation of the farm, based on which proposals for an organic 'target (endpoint)' can be developed. This includes proposed rotation(s), cropping and stocking plan for the specific farm situation and the proposals need to be tested for their technical and financial feasibility, including impact on forage supply, nutrient requirements and financial...

Eftervirkning af rødkløver i rug Organic Eprints
Holm, Sandie.
N/ha i gylle.

In organic farming the cultivation of leguminous crops is one of the most important sources of nitrogen (N). However, in the case of winter field peas, the amount of N fixed, N supply to the subsequent crop and N balance there are hardly any published data. Therefore, the pre-crop effect of six genotypes of winter pea (five regular leaf type, one semi-leafless cultivar) and one semi-leafless spring pea cultivar in single and mixed cropping (with rye spring barley respectively) was examined in three suc-cesive growing seasons (2003/04-2005/06). Immediately after harvest, a catch crop was sown and sampled during the first half of October to determine biomass dry matter and N uptake. In single cropping, N uptake by the catch crop was usually significantly...

The contribution of grass and clover root turnover to N leaching Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Jesper; Helgadóttir, Á.; Frankow-Lindberg, B.; Loges, R.; Eriksen, J..
Sources of inorganic and organic N leaching from grass-clover mixtures at field sites in Denmark, Germany and Iceland were investigated. Grass or clover was labelled with 15N-urea four times (autumn 2007, spring, summer and autumn 2008) prior to the leaching season in autumn and winter 2008. Soil water was sampled at 30 cm depth and analyzed for 15N-enrichment of dissolved inorganic N (DIN) and dissolved organic N (DON). Most 15N was recovered in DON for both labelled grass and clover at all sites. At the Danish site, grass and clover contributed more to the DON pool than the DIN whereas the opposite was observed at the German and Icelandic sites. The results show that both clover and grass contribute directly to N leaching from the root zone in mixtures,...

Direct drilling of winter cereals Organic Eprints
Bortolussi, Stefano.
Direct drilling has achieved results similar to conventional sowing techniques (including seedbed preparation) if the soil is well structured. Practical recommendations Observations and practical tips • Pay attention to the soil structure when applying any mechanical operation. During the harvest, offloading should take place at the headlands. • In the case of a high presence of deep-rooting weeds, choose a double-layer soil preparation (instead of compacting the soil) in order to increase porosity. • Avoid sowing if heavy rains are expected in the next 5-6 days. • Include cover crops in the rotation to improve soil structure. Cover crops are a key element to fine-tune direct drilling techniques. • Directly drilled soil warms up more slowly in...

Vergleich verschiedener Klee-Gras-Mischungen anhand der Wurzel- und Sprossleistung Organic Eprints
Braun, Michaela; Schmidt, Harald; Grundler, Thomas.

Hein, Waltraud; Waschl, Hermann.
In this project, located at Winklhof, a comparison between organic and conventional farming is done. The field trial combines a crop rotation with two levels of fertilisation intensities (one is 1.0 LU ha- and the other is 1.8 LU ha-1). The fertilisation-systems are stable-manure and liquid manure, the treatments were done organically. The aim of this project is to find out which production system is better for the environment in spite of crop yield, product quality and leaching losses. The last parameter was measured in lysimeters. A high amount of yearly precipitation could account the high amount of seepage water. Consequently the leaching losses of both production systems could be compared.

Forage herbs improve mineral composition of grassland herbage Organic Eprints
Pirhofer-Walzl , K.; Søegaard, Karen; Høgh-Jensen, Henning; Eriksen, Jørgen; Sanderson, M.A.; Rasmussen , Jim; Rasmussen, Jesper.
Provision of an adequate mineral supply in the diets of ruminants fed mainly on grassland herbage can present a challenge if mineral concentrations are suboptimal for animal nutrition. Forage herbs may be included in grassland seed mixtures to improve herbage mineral content, although there is limited information about mineral concentrations in forage herbs. To determine whether herbs have greater macro- and micromineral concentrations than forage legumes and grasses, we conducted a 2-year experiment on a loamy-sand site in Denmark sown with a multi-species mixture comprised of three functional groups (grasses, legumes and herbs). Herb species included chicory (Cichorium intybus L.), plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.), caraway (Carum carvi L.) and salad...

Long-term organic crop rotation experiments for cereal production – yield development and dynamics Organic Eprints
Askegaard, Margrethe; Olesen, Jørgen E.; Rasmussen, Ilse A..
A crop rotation experiment was established in 1996/97 at three locations representing different soil types and climates. Three factors were tested: i) crop rotation with different proportions of N2-fixing crops, ii) with and without a catch crop, and iii) with and without animal manure. A green manure crop increased yields in the following cereal crops, but at the rotational level, total yields were larger in crop rotations without a green manure crop. There were positive effects of animal manure and catch crops on yield. However, except for the coarse sandy soil, the yield effects of catch crops and animal manure decreased over time when a grass-clover green manure was included in the rotation. It appeared that the buffering effect of clover can...

Improved weed management in organic crop production Organic Eprints
Melander, B.; Olesen, J.E..
Weed problems can constrain organic crop production resulting in significant losses in yield and quality. Especially perennial weed species such as Elytrigia repens, Cirsium arvense and Tussilago farfara are posing problems as arable cropping systems do not hamper their vegetative proliferation sufficiently. Annual weeds may also reach unacceptable infestation levels leaving the growers with poor yielding crops and severe future weed problems owing to the shedding and spread of weed seeds. Effective weed management is a key component for successful organic crop production and a prerequisite to increase the yielding potential of many organic crop production systems. Weed problems are most severe on stockless arable farms because the supply of nutrients can...

The arable vegetation of Baltic organic cereal fields as shaped by crop management Organic Eprints
Hofmeijer, Merel A.J.; Melander, Bo; Salonen, Jukka; Verwijst, Theo; Zarina, Livija; Gerowitt, Bärbel.
Weeds remain to be the main challenge within this agricultural system, especially perennials in the north European realm. Because of increased interest in agrobiodiversity functioning, weeds should be kept within manageable limits, while on the other side encourage a specie rich weed flora. One of the PRODIVA project objectives is to investigate to which extent these two aspects can be addressed through the use of diversified crop management. In order to research this objective, weed and management data were obtained from organic farms in the baltic region over the course of two years (2015-2016) in spring sown cereal crops. The impact of the local environment and management factors on the occurring weed communities was studied in multivariate analysis...

Impact of cropping system on mycorrhiza Organic Eprints
Kahiluoto, H.; Vestberg, M..
The impact of cropping system on field communities of mycorrhizal fungi was studied utilising a long-term experiment on a loamy soil. Two contrasting crop rotations each with two fertilisation regimes were compared. The conventional crop rotation (barley-barley-rye-oat-potato-oat) was fertilised at either full or half the normal recommended rate. In the low-input crop rotation, one year with barley was replaced by clover, and oat was cultivated in mixture with pea. For this rotation biotite and raw phosphate was used to compensate for the K and P of the harvested yield; animal manure was used at the beginning only. Clover and straw were returned to the soil either directly or after composting. Mycorrhizal infectivity and effectiveness were studied in...

Soil carbon storage and yields of spring barley following grass leys of different age Organic Eprints
Christensen, B.T.; Rasmussen, J.; Eriksen, J.; Hansen, E.M..
The inclusion of leys in arable cropping is generally found to improve soil fertility. The effect of leys depends on their botanical composition and management, but the significance of individual management factors remains confounded in most studies. We quantified the effects of one- to six-year-old pure grass leys on soil C (0-20 cm) and yields of three subsequent test crops of spring barley (Hordeum vulgare) under-sown with Italian ryegrass (Lolium perenne). Each ley was a mixture of four grass species (Lolium perenne, Festuca pratensis, Phleum pratense, Poa pratensis), exposed to three to four cuts annually. Only mineral fertilizers were applied (225 kg N ha-1 yr-1). The yield of barley was tested at six rates of N fertilizer (0 to 150 kg N ha-1). The...

Intercropping of oilseeds and faba beans Organic Eprints
Kießling, Daniela; Köpke, Prof. Dr. Ulrich.
Intercrops are considered as less susceptible to pests and diseases and may inhibit weeds more efficiently resulting in enhanced yields and profitability. N2 fixation of legumes is an important nitrogen (N) input factor of Organic Farming systems and results in partly unused plant available soil N (PAN) in sole cropped faba beans. Simultaneously cultivated oilseeds may function as sinks for PAN and enhance biodiversity with all positive aspects. In this respect we investigated several oilseeds intercropped with faba beans at different row distances. Depending on row distance we analysed e.g. the use of soil nutrients and land equivalent ratio (LER). Intercropped oilseeds depleted PAN between FB rows significantly in early development. In 2007 yield...
