Pest and diseases can have a significant effect on the establishment, yield and longevity of grass and forage crops. This tool is an atlas for the identification of the main pests regarding grass and forage crops. It has been written for Wales climates and it is not specific for organic farming. Nonetheless, the information contained, can be used by farmers, conventional or organic, skilled or newcomers, all over Europe. Besides pest descriptions, with pictures that facilitate the task of identification, it provides useful hints on preventive, non-chemical, practices to reduce pest incidence. |

Two myco-insecticides, Naturalis-L (Beauveria bassiana) and PreFeRal®WG (Paecilomyces fumosoroseus), were applied against adult R. cerasi Loew (Diptera: Tephritidae) in two orchards in north-western Switzerland in summer 2006. Both products were applied at a concentration of 5.75x104 CFU/ml. With four applications at seven day intervals the whole flight period of R. cerasi was fully covered. During this period the relative humidity averaged 66.3% (5th June – 6th July), the temperature averaged 20.5°C. Under these conditions only Naturalis-L significantly reduced the number of damaged fruit (efficacy: 69-74%), whereas damaged fruits were not significantly reduced with PreFeRal (efficacy: 27%). For B. bassiana living fungal propagules were still detectable... |

Abstract Plant virus epidemiology provides powerful tools to investigate key factors that contribute to virus epidemics in agricultural crops. When successful, epidemiological approaches help to guide decisions regarding plant protection strategies. A recent example is epidemiological research on Potato virus Y (PVY) in Finnish seed potato production; this study led to the dentification of the main PVY vector species and helped to determine the timing of virus transmission. However, pathosystems rarely allow research to produce such clear-cut results. In fact, the notorious complexity of plant virus pathosystems, with multiple interactions between virus, vector, plant and environment, makes them often impenetrable even for advanced epidemiological models.... |

Susceptibility of different life stages of Rhagoletis cerasi to entomopathogenic fungi. The effects of six fungus strains (Deuteromycotina: Hyphomycetes) on the mortality of different life stages of the European cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis cerasi Loew (Diptera: Tephritidae), were assessed in a series of laboratory experiments. All fungus strains caused mycoses in larvae and adults of R. cerasi. Virulence however varied considerably between the strains. Effects on L3-larvae were negligible; none of the fungus strains caused mortalities of more than 25% of larvae. Adults by contrast were highly susceptible to fungal infection. Beauveria bassiana and Paecilomyces fumosoroseus caused 90 to 100% mortality and had a strong influence on fecundity. Metarhizium... |

Maheviljeluslikus külvikorras on oluline osa vahekultuuride kasvatamisel. Põhikultuuride kasvatamise vahepealsel ajal vahekultuurid kaitsevad ja rikastavad mulda toitainetega ning suruvad alla umbrohtumust. Vahekultuure ei kasvatata müügikasu eesmärgil, vaid sissekündmisel muutub see... |

In organic farming the copper compounds are the only substances that can be used against downy mildew. As the copper causes problems of environmental impact, the Regulation EC n. 473/2002 fixed a ceiling on its use. Two-years experimental trials (2007-2008) were carried out in organic vineyard in order to evaluate anti-downy mildew effectiveness of natural products. Homeopathic products, resistance promoters, plant extracts and potassium bicarbonate have been tested. In 2007, a year of limited infection pressure, these products were able to control the disease, whereas in 2008, a year of high risk of disease, the natural products were scarsely effective. In conclusion, the natural products can be used in alternative to copper in condition of low or... |

Organic farmers face the same potentially severe pest problems as their colleagues in integrated pest management (IPM) and conventional farming systems. However, approaches to manage the pest insects are different because the aim of organic farming is a holistic system perspective rather than simple reductionist control approaches. Organic cropping systems are designed to prevent damaging levels of pests, thus minimizing the need for direct and curative pest control (Peacock and Norton, 1990). Within the following chapter, we will briefly explain the standards for organic farming, which also set the framework for pest control. We present a conceptual model for pest control in organic farming and describe the influence of functional agro-biodiversity and... |

From 2013 2015, the release and establishment of predatory mites for the control of two-spotted spider mites, Tetranychus urticae, was conducted in five hop gardens of The species compared were the autochthonous mites Typhlodromus pyri, Amblyseius andersoni and a mix of the two allochthonous species Neoseiulus californicus and phytoseiulus persimilis. Main objective was the establishment of a permanent population of T. pyri in a hop garden by providing the predators with structures for their hibernation by undersown crops. We chose seeding of tall fescue Festuca arundinacea, a grassland seed mixture and strawberries as an intercrop in the wheel lanes. During the three project years, 15 trials were conducted of which however only two yielded meaningful... |
