Using visual stimuli to explore the social perceptions of ecosystem services in cultural landscapes: the case of transhumance in Mediterranean Spain Ecology and Society
Plieninger, Tobias; Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, University of Copenhagen; tobias.plieninger@ign.ku.dk.
The ecosystem services approach has been proposed as a powerful tool for the analysis of coupled social-ecological systems. This approach is particularly useful for the evaluation of cultural landscapes, which represent the joint evolution of humans and nature across an extended time span. Transhumance is a customary practice of mobile pastoralism, involving the regular seasonal migration of livestock herds between summer and winter pasturelands. This practice maintains unique cultural landscapes in Mediterranean Spain, which have been shaped over many centuries of pastoral activity. Drove roads, which are used for herd migration, represent the most outstanding feature of these landscapes. We used visually based landscape interpretation to evaluate social...

The Role of Governance in Agricultural Expansion and Intensification: a Global Study of Arable Agriculture Ecology and Society
Mandemaker, Menno; Chairgroup of Land Dynamics, Wageningen University; menno.mandemaker@wur.nl; Bakker, Martha; Chairgroup of Land Dynamics, Wageningen University; Martha.bakker@wur.nl; Stoorvogel, Jetse; Chairgroup of Land Dynamics, Wageningen University; jetse.stoorvogel@wur.nl.
In this research we studied empirical relationships between agricultural production dynamics and six quantitative World Bank governance indicators for 173 countries between 1975 and 2007. It is hypothesized that in countries with lower quality of governance, agricultural production increases are more likely to be achieved by area expansions than by increases in yields. We distinguished four groups of countries: those with both area and yield increases; those with increasing yields but decreasing area; those with decreasing yields but a growing area; and those with both declines in yields and area. We analyzed differences between these four groups, and also analyzed governance-production relationships within these groups. On average, quality of governance...

Combining Supply and Demand Estimates for Ecosystem Services from Cropland AgEcon
Ma, Shan; Swinton, Scott M.; Lupi, Frank.
Payment-for-Ecosystem-Services (PES) programs are gaining appeal as flexible approaches to inducing the voluntary provision of ecosystem services (ES). Farmers, who manage agricultural ecosystems, provide important nonmarket ecosystem services to the public by their choice of production inputs and management practices. Although there exist various PES programs in the United States and Europe, we are aware of none that was designed based on a comprehensive understanding of the underlying supply and demand of ecosystem services. Taking advantage of unique, coupled datasets of stated preferences, this paper combines a supply-side cost function of farmers’ willingness to adopt practices that provide increased ES with a demand-side social benefit function of...

Using a Bundled Amenity Model to Estimate the Value of Cropland Open Space and Determine an Optimal Buffer Zone AgEcon
Kuminoff, Nicolai V..
This study investigates how proximity to cropland influences residential property values and considers the public policy implications. The hedonic model generalizes previous studies by recognizing that the bundle of externalities generated by crop production may increase the price of some homes and decrease the price of others, depending on their respective locations. Using an instrumental variables approach to estimate the model for San Joaquin County, California, suggests that proximity to cropland increases the value of most, but not all, single-family homes near the agricultural-urban edge. The results imply an agricultural buffer zone of 68 meters would mitigate most cropland disamenities.

Comparison of Land Use Area Estimates from Three Different Data Sources for the Upper Mississippi River Basin AgEcon
Chinnisamy, Santhi; Gassman, Philip W.; Secchi, Silvia; Srinivasan, Raghavan.
This study presents the results of comparing land use estimates between three different data sets for the Upper Mississippi River Basin (UMRB). The comparisons were performed between the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) National Resource Inventory (NRI), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Land Cover Data (NLCD) database, and a combined USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) Agricultural Census – NLCD dataset created to support applications of the Hydrologic Unit Model for the U.S. (HUMUS). The comparison was performed for 1992 versions of the datasets because that was the only consistent year available among all three data sources. The results show that differences in land use area...

COMPARING LAND VALUES AND CAPITALIZATION OF CASH RENTS FOR CROPLAND AND PASTURE IN GEORGIA AgEcon
Flanders, Archie; White, Fred C.; Escalante, Cesar L..
Nonagricultural factors impact land values to cause a divergence of discounted cash rents for agricultural land and land values. Focus is given to the portion of land values attributable to discounted cash rents. Unique characteristics for cropland and pasture lead to differences in capitalization rates. Nonagricultural factors are greatest for pasture. Keywords: land values, cash rents, capitalization, discounted cash rents, cropland, pasture
Tipo: Conference Paper or Presentation Palavras-chave: Land values; Cash rents; Capitalization; Discounted cash rents; Cropland; Pasture; Land Economics/Use.

An Overview of Agriculture in the Rural Municipalities of the Lower Souris River Watershed AgEcon
Harper, Dana; Unterschultz, James R.; Jeffrey, Scott R..
A statistical overview of agriculture in the region encompassed by the Lower Souris River Watershed committee was undertaken. The region in the south east corner of the province of Saskatchewan has about 8%of the total number of farms in Saskatchewan, and this has remained relatively consistent since the early 1980s. The actual number of has decreased and Statistics Canada reports that the total number of farms in crop district 1A and 1B in the 2006 census is 1,823 and 1,743, respectively. The area of farms in crop district 1 is currently about 7% of the total area of farms in Saskatchewan. Statistics Canada reports that the total area of farms in crop district 1A and 1B in the 2006 census is 2,687,728 and 2,312,446, respectively. The report also provides...

Major Uses of Land in The United States, 2002 AgEcon
Lubowski, Ruben N.; Vesterby, Marlow; Bucholtz, Shawn; Baez, Alba; Roberts, Michael J..
This publication presents the results of the latest (2002) inventory of U.S. major land uses, drawing on data from the Census, public land management and conservation agencies, and other sources. The data are synthesized by State to calculate the use of several broad classes and subclasses of agricultural and nonagricultural land over time. The United States has a total land area of nearly 2.3 billion acres. Major uses in 2002 were forest-use land, 651 million acres (28.8 percent); grassland pasture and range land, 587 million acres (25.9 percent); cropland, 442 million acres (19.5 percent); special uses (primarily parks and wildlife areas), 297 million acres (13.1 percent); miscellaneous other uses, 228 million acres (10.1 percent); and urban land, 60...

Structure and composition of bacterial and fungal community in soil under soybean monoculture in the Brazilian Cerrado BJM
Bresolin,J.D; Bustamante,M.M.C; Krüger,R.H; Silva,M.R.S.S; Perez,K.S.
Soybean is the most important oilseed cultivated in the world and Brazil is the second major producer. Expansion of soybean cultivation has direct and indirect impacts on natural habitats of high conservation value, such as the Brazilian savannas (Cerrado). In addition to deforestation, land conversion includes the use of fertilizers and pesticides and can lead to changes in the soil microbial communities. This study evaluated the soil bacterial and fungal communities and the microbial biomass C in a native Cerrado and in a similar no-tillage soybean monoculture area using PCR-DGGE and sequencing of bands. Compared to the native area, microbial biomass C was lower in the soybean area and cluster analysis indicated that the structure of soil microbial...
