Is it possible to derive accurately Total Suspended Matter concentration or its proxy, turbidity, from remote sensing data in tropical coastal lagoon waters? To investigate this question, hyperspectral remote sensing reflectance, turbidity and chlorophyll pigment concentration were measured in three coral reef lagoons. The three sites enabled us to get data over very diverse environments: oligotrophic and sediment-poor waters in the southwest lagoon of New Caledonia, eutrophic waters in the Cienfuegos Bay (Cuba), and sediment-rich waters in the Laucala Bay (Fiji). In this paper, optical algorithms for turbidity are presented per site based on 113 stations in New Caledonia, 24 stations in Cuba and 56 stations in Fiji. Empirical algorithms are tested at... |

Backgound The venom of the Cuban scorpion Rhopalurus junceus is poorly study from the point of view of their components at molecular level and the functions associated. The purpose of this article was to conduct a proteomic analysis of venom components from scorpions collected in different geographical areas of the country. Results Venom from the blue scorpion, as it is called, was collected separately from specimens of five distinct Cuban towns (Moa, La Poa, Limonar, El Chote and Farallones) of the Nipe-Sagua-Baracoa mountain massif and fractionated by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC); the molecular masses of each fraction were ascertained by mass spectrometry analysis. At least 153 different molecular mass components were identified among... |

This paper aims to examine farmers’ perception on the contribution of farmers’ experiments to sustainable agriculture. Field research was conducted in Cuba and comprised semi-structured interviews with 72 farmers. Most Cuban farmers experimented with locally available resources. According to the farmers’ perception, resources, topics and methods were ecologically compatible and involved little risks. Through experimenting the respondents felt, that they increased the production and the degree of self-sufficiency. Farmers ensured that experiments contributed to improve the local farming system and thereby supported the sustainable development of agriculture. |

The typical Cuban farming units are large-scale cooperatives, in which farming families are more or less loosely organized. In the low lands, these cooperatives normally specialize in a few products for the market and a higher diversity of self-sufficiency crops. In the mountain areas, these cooperatives produce in diverse agroforestry systems. This is especially the case for the eastern provinces Guantanamo and Santiago. Large-scale plantations were developed by the Spanish and US colonialists, and further developed by the socialist government. After Cuban Revolution in 1959, land was distributed to more than 200’000 small farmer families through the Agrarian Reforms of 1959 and 1963, while 70 percent of the latifundio lands passed over to state control.... |

Agriculture in post-revolutionary Cuba is based on large-scale, capital-intensive and labour-extensive monocultures. In order to sustain these, the island continually imported fertilizers, pesticides and diesel at subsidized prices from the former Soviet economic aid community, COMECOM. Since this collapsed in the early 1990s, Cuba has suffered from an acute shortage of raw materials. At the same time, the main sales market for Cuban agricultural production has disappeared. Given this situation, agriculture in Cuba faces multiple challenges: Firstly Cuba needs to find new customers, practically overnight. Secondly, its agricultural producers must learn to manage with the little that they themselves have. Thirdly, Cuba needs financial resources to renovate... |

Rhigonema nesoboli sp. nov. (Nematoda: Rhigonematidae) is described from the gut of Nesobolus piedra (Diplopoda: Rhinocricidae) from Eastern Cuba. The new species is characterized by: the body length of both sexes; the cephalic collar umbelliform; the microtricha large, fine, backwardly directed, extending until the first portion of the intestine; the tail comparatively long and subulate in the female and elbowed in the male; the genital tract of Type 4; a number of 19-21 copulatory papillae arranged as 6-7 pre-cloacal pairs with a single median adanal papillae and three post-cloacal pairs; and the spicules arcuate and comparatively slender. It is closer to R. villosum Hunt, 1995, but differs by having a shorter body in both sexes and less copulatory... |

Artigasia milerai sp. nov. (Oxyurida: Hystrignathidae) is described from the gut caeca of Passalus interstitialis Escholtz, 1829 (Coleoptera: Passalidae) from Escaleras de Jaruco, La Habana province, Cuba (type locality) and El Pan de Matanzas, Matanzas province, Cuba. It differs from A. ensicrinata (Hunt, 1981), A. monodelpha (Travassos & Kloss, 1958) and A. pauliani Théodoridès, 1955 by having ridged eggs and a comparatively shorter tail. It also differs from A. monodelpha and A. pauliani by having a comparatively shorter esophagus, the vulva being slightly more posterior, and the extension of the cervical spines. It is close to A. ankaratrae Van Waerebeke, 1973 but can be differentiated by a stouter body, a comparatively shorter oesophagus and... |

Increases in the United States tariff-rate quota for sugar are simulated to determine the impact of Cuban market access and an increased Mexican allotment. The effects on both domestic and international sugar markets, including production, consumption, prices and trade, are determined and welfare effects identified. This analysis is carried out using a partial-equilibrium simplified world trade model, Modele International Simplifie de Simulation (MISS), which simulates, in a comparative-static framework, the effects of various policy actions. |

For many years, the United States has blocked trade with Cuba, but the situation has recently changed. The Trade Sanctions Reform and Export Enhancement Act of 2000 loosened U.S. sanctions on agricultural exports to Cuba, allowing Cuba to buy from the United States using cash but not credit. The objectives of this study are to analyze Cuban agricultural production and trade and to estimate potential agricultural trade flows that could occur between the United States and Cuba if the embargo was completely lifted. The effects of various increases in Cuban GDP on Cuban import demand are also analyzed. Cuba could be a significant market for U.S. exports of wheat, wheat flour, rice, corn, pulses, poultry, and dairy products, while the United States would... |
