This research paper focuses on investigating the effect of using various substrate materials on the development of seedlings for ornamental plants. Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon), Petunia (Compacta Enana Rosa) and Epipremnum aureum, Bermuda; Petunia and Epipremnum aureum were cultivated in different substrates. Synthetic sponge (Polyurethane sponge), Rockwool and sterilized cotton were used as the substrate materials in each case where an experimental water-circulating apparatus was designed and installed to execute the test. Results showed that after 15 days, Bermuda grass in Rockwool reached a germination rate of 70% while it did not exceed 50% in sponge or in medically treated cotton. The highest germination rate after 20 days for Petunia was... |

Hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) is commonly used as mycorrhizal host for Tuber melanosporum Vitt. (black truffle). Black truffle orchards have been established in and outside its natural distribution area, currently also in Chile. Hazelnut can be propagated rapidly by cuttings, which, however, may not easily form mycorrhizal symbiosis under laboratory conditions. We successfully inoculated hazelnut cuttings with T. melanosporum and studied the effects of culture conditions, plant material and inoculum age on rhizogenesis and mycorrhization. Cuttings from sucker shoots showed the highest rooting rate (88.5%). Perlite and vermiculite as substrate increased root length (9.6 cm ). Treatment with auxin significantly increased root yield (up to 27 roots per... |

ABSTRACT: Drimys brasiliensis Miers is an Angiosperm native to the Atlantic Rainforest, commonly known as cataia. Because of dormancy of its seeds, due to embryonic immaturity, production of cataia seedlings presents challenges regarding propagation of the species. Thus, cuttings emerged as a possible technique to be applied, diminishing plants production time and ensuring uniformity of rooting. Stem cuttings from current year shoots were collected in autumn/2012, prepared with 10-12cm in length, a bevel cut on base and straight on top, keeping two leaves, one leaf or no leaves in the apical portion. After disinfestation, bases of cuttings were submitted to the following treatments with indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) in 50% hydro-alcoholic solution: 100%... |

Smilax L. species, popularly known in Brazil as salsaparrilha, have been used in folk medicine as tonic against rheumatism and as anti-syphilitic since the sixteenth century; however, until today, their roots have been explored in an extractive way. The aim of this study was to analyze the propagation of Smilax fluminensis aiming to meet the demand and to propose procedures for its sustainable management. It was analyzed the percentage of seed germination, rooting of aerial and subterranean stem cuttings and plant resprouting capacity after removal of the shoots. The monitoring lasted one year. Seeds were subjected to temperatures: 25°C, 30°C, 20-30°C and 20-35°C under a daily photoperiod of eight hours and in the absence of light. For rooting the stem... |

ABSTRACT: The mangaba (Hancornia spp.) is a native fruit and latex tree of wide spread occurrence in the Brazilian Savannh, Pantanal, Amazon, and Atlantic Coast from Amapá to Espírito Santo States. It is also found in the neighbouring countries of Paraguai, Bolívia, Peru and Venezuela. This specie has a great potential due to its low caloric fruits which present a special taste and flavor and are much appreciated by the local population such as fresh fruits, juices, icecream, fruit-jelly and liqueur. Its post harvest short shelf fruit life and the large distance from the consumers centers can not support the increasing demand for this fruit, leading farmers to interest in its cultivation. Hence, much research is needed, mainly the appropriate sexual and... |

ABSTRACT: The coconut cultivated area has greatly increased in the Federal District Region of Brazil for the last five years. However, the crop management is still poor on seedling production. Therefore, the improvement of production methods has been highly demanded by coconut growers. Coconut seeds (fruits) should be collected from a superior genetic material and the seedlings should be vigorous, of pest and disease free and well established. The first step is the appropriate age to harvest the fruits, 11 to 12 months after opening the spathe. There is no difference in germination rate for no cutting or cutting on basal position of the fruits before sowing them. Cutting is less adopted by growers, and no cutting seems to be more practical and less... |
