Four previously unknown hypogean species of cyclopoid copepods were collected in cenotes and wells of the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico. Diacyclops chakan sp. n. and D. puuc sp. n. differ from their congeners in combining 3-segmented swimming legs, 11-segmented antennules, and legs 1-4 endopodite segment 2 all with 2 setae. Species of Diacyclops rarely occur in tropical regions, and the Diacyclops described here are only the second and third species recorded from Mexico. The benthic D. puuc was found in the large underground reservoir of a cenote. Diacyclops chakan was encountered in such large open subterranean water basins, but more frequently and abundantly in wells. Mantra speciosa Leigh-Sharpe, 1934 (ex Poecilostomatoida), collected during the Siboga Expedition is redescribed on the basis of the holotype female. The 15-segmented antennule and the gnathostomous nature of the mouthparts exclude the Mantridae from the Poecilostomatoida and point to a relationship with the tunicate-infesting families Ascidicolidae, Notodelphyidae and Archinotodelphyidae (Cyclopoida). Nearchinotodelphys indicus Ummerkutty, 1960 (ex Archinotodelphyidae) is transferred to the Mantridae. It is suggested that the bivalveinhabiting mantrids have diverged from the ascidicolous lineage leading to the Notodelphyidae and Ascidicolidae. |

Reidcyclops n. gen. (Copepoda, Cyclopoida) is established to comprise three species, previously considered as members of the genus Diacyclops: Reidcyclops dimorphus (Reid & Strayer, 1994) n. comb., R. imparilis (Monchenko, 1985) n. comb., and R. trajani (Reid & Strayer, 1994) n. comb. (here designated as the type species). This genus is characterised by a 2-segmented fifth leg, and by the presence of sexual dimorphism in the swimming legs, as well as by other characteristics. In this paper the male of R. trajani is described for the first time from Macedonia. The taxonomic position of the new genus within the subfamily Cyclopinae is discussed. |

A small collection of copepod samples from several wells in the Canterbury region, South Island, was examined. It contained a few cosmopolitan cyclopoid species, three interesting harpacticoids, as well as two new cyclopoid genera. The latter are presented in this paper, together with a redescription and first description of the male of Goniocyclops silvestris Harding, 1958, a cyclopoid species previously known only from North Island. Both new genera are from the Diacyclops-Acanthocyclops complex. The cyclopid genus Haplocyclops Kiefer, 1952, generally considered as a subgenus of Bryocyclops, is revalidated, and its diagnosis emended. Haplocyclops torresi sp. n. is described from the Rio Doce, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, the first record of this genus from the South American continent. Harpacticoids found in the same river were identified as Potamocaris estevesi Reid, 1991. The latter species is redescribed, the female described for the first time, and its distribution area is widened with new records in rivers of the southeastern part of Brazil. The mouthparts of P. estevesi are described for the first time. |

Cuipora janaina gen. n., sp. n., and Cyclopina caiala sp. n. are described from the interstitial water of a sandy beach in Salvador, Bahia (Brazil). Cuipora is distinguished from all other genera of the subfamily Cyclopininae in having the endopodite of legs 1-4 2-segmented and the terminal segment armed with 4 setae. Cuipora is compared to Erythropolites Huys & Boxshall, 1990, Herbstina Huys & Boxshall, 1990, and Cyclopina Claus, 1862, with which it has most morphological similarities. Cyclopina caiala sp. n. is distinguished by the structure of the leg 5 of the male and female and by a particular combination of characters of the mouthparts. Taxonomical problems involving Cylopina mediterranea Steuer, 1940 are discussed. |

Originally described by Löffler in 1962 as a variety of Mesocyclops longisetus, M. araucanus was found to have autapomorphies of its own to deserve specific rank. For a long time the identification of these two species were mixed up. Here, M. araucanus female is redescribed and the male described for the first time. A comparison is made with M. longisetus, whose male is also described for the first time. Neocyclops (Protoneocyclops) ferrarii sp. n. is described from Candy’s Pond, Twin Cays, Belize. It is morphologically closest to N. (P.) wellsi Petkovski, 1986 from Mozambique and N. (P.) herbsti Petkovski, 1986 from the Red Sea. Pediger 1 in Neocyclops is distinct although reduced and often concealed beneath the cephalic shield. Specimens of Neocyclops (N.) vicinus and N. (N.) medius showed the same condition, warranting the supposition that the free pediger 1 is a consistent feature of the genus. The genital double somite bears a transverse cuticular thickening which apparently supports the seminal receptacle. The importance of the integumental pore patterns of the urosome and legs as useful taxonomic characters is pointed out. |

Recent collections in the south central U.S.A. have included three neotropical and one probably introduced species that are presently assigned to the cyclopoid copepod genus Mesocyclops. Mesocyclops longisetus var. curvatus Dussart, 1987, is reported from Louisiana, U.S.A., and Panama; published records of Mesocyclops longisetus (Thiébaud, 1914) sensu lato in the southern U.S.A. are reviewed. Collections from the Brazilian Planalto and Amazon regions contained several species of the cyclopoid copepod genus Tropocyclops. The morphology of T. schubarti is discussed; new records of this species extend its known distribution westward to the Brazilian Amazon and central highlands. Morphological characteristics of some populations of the T. prasinusgroup are most similar to T. prasinus mexicanus and T. prasinus s. str. Tropocyclops federensis n. sp. and T. nananae n. sp. are described from the Distrito Federal. Psammocyclopina georgei sp. n. is described from submersed sands in the Magellan Strait, South Atlantic Ocean. This is the second species of the genus, previously known only from the Indian Ocean (Mozambique). Psammocyclopina Wells, 1967 is the sistergroup of Metacyclopina Lindberg, 1953. Psammocyclopinidae fam. n. is accordingly proposed to unify these genera into one monophyletic unit.
