In a document from the General Secretariat of the Merchant Navy (P. 3 - MJ - June 1976), it is written: The coast is a rare asset, limited in essence as it is not interchangeable. Moreover, it is coveted and used by numerous users, sometimes aggressive or very powerful, who often take up the areas that are the richest from a biological point of view. This reality is at the origin of a number of land occupancy issues, all the more when a rational or enhancive preliminary choice has not been made. It can also lead to damages or pollutions, the coastal area being more exposed as rivers carry all the effluents which flow into them from their source to the ocean". Witnessing this competition, it appears that marine cultures need to be considered as very... |

Until now, French Mediterranean shellfish culture was only carried out at relatively sheltered sites: some salted lagoons in Languedoc-Roussillon and Corsica and in the roadsted of Toulon The shellfish culture area of the Thau lagoon spreads out over about 1,200 hectares, that of Leucate over 140 hectares; in Corsica, shellfish farming is carried out on small rafts distributed among the different lagoons (around 80 in Diana and 50 in Urbino). In the roadsted of Toulon, most of the farms are about to close down. According to official figures, the Mediterranean production amounts to about 10,000 tonnes. In reality, the Thau lagoon production alone amounts to, at least, double this tonnage (HAMON et TOURNIER, 1981). It corresponds to at least 90 % of the... |
