Five wheat genotypes including two commercial cultivars (Mist1 and Misr2) and three Ug99-race specific genes (Sr24, Sr25, and Sr31) were screened for stem rust resistance based on phenotypic and genotypic reaction. Based on phenotypic reaction, Sr24 (LcSr24Ag) and Sr31 (Seri-82) exhibited seeding and adult plant resistance while the wheat cultivars, Misr1 and Misr2 were susceptible. Sr25 Agatha (CI 14048)/9*LMPG-6 DK16 exhibited seedling resistance while showed susceptibility at adult plant stage. Based on genotypic reaction, DNA markers showed that gene Sr25 was only found to be present in Misr1 and Misr2 while Sr24 and Sr31 were absent in both cultivars. Although, virulence to Sr25 was detected. However, avirulence to Sr24 remains this gene as a suitable... |

Abstract: Due to the increasing search for renewable resources, plant fibers have become an alternative when creating new products. Studies demonstrate the potential use of pineapple fibers in composites. The objective of this work was to evaluate the genetic diversity and verify any association between ISSR (Inter Simple Sequence Repeats) bands and quality of pineapple fibers for use in cements in the civil construction. The study analyzed the genetic variability of 11 pineapple genotypes, as well as the possible association of 131 bands from 16 ISSR markers with fiber quality characteristics. Eleven bands were selected based on their high correlations (0.64578* to 0.72457*) with three fiber quality variables. Of these, two bands were purified, sequenced,... |

EST-SSR markers were used to investigate the genetic diversity among and within coffee populations, to explore the possibility of their use for fingerprinting of cultivars and to assist breeding programs. Seventeen markers, developed from ESTs (Expressed Sequence Tags) from the Brazilian Coffee Genome Project, were used. All markers showed polymorphism among the genotypes assessed. The average number of allele per primer was 5.1. The highest polymorphisms were found within C. canephora (88.2%) and rust-resistant varieties (35.3%). About 29.4% of the markers differentiated C. arabica from Híbrido de Timor; it was also possible to identify those closest and farthest from C. arabica . The analysis of population-grouped genotypes revealed a 64.0% genetic... |

RAPD was used to access the genetic variability in Aspisdosperma polyneuron, a long-lived, late-reproducing tropical tree, and highly important for the Atlantic Forest. RAPD profiles from adults (pre-fragmentation, >300 years old) and seedlings (post-fragmentation, <<50 years old) were analyzed. Results showed a decrease of genetic polymorphism of post-fragmentation cohorts in small fragments and higher genetic diversity within population. The genetic diversity distribution suggested the establishment of fragments as protected reserves, and the transference of seedlings among fragments for conservation of A. polyneuron. |

Background: Memecylon species are commonly used in Indian ethnomedical practices. The accurate identification is vital to enhance the drug's efficacy and biosafety. In the present study, PCR based techniques like RAPD, ISSR and DNA barcoding regions, such as 5s, psbA-trnH, rpoC1, ndh and atpF-atpH, were used to authenticate and analyze the diversity of five Memecylon species collected from Western Ghats of India. Results: Phylogenetic analysis clearly distinguished Memecylon malabaricum from Memecylon wightii and Memecylon umbellatum from Memecylon edule and clades formed are in accordance with morphological keys. In the RAPD and ISSR analyses, 27 accessions representing five Memecylon species were distinctly separated into three different clades. M.... |
