Milking Machines on Chilean Dairy Farms and their Effects on Somatic Cell Count and Milk Yield: A Fied Study Agricultura Técnica
Garcés A,R; López F,J; Bruckmaier,R. M.
Thirty-four dairy farms in the south central zone of Chile were evaluated in order to describe the functioning of the milking machines with respect to vacuum, pulsators, milklines and cluster characteristics and their relationship with somatic cell count (SCC) and milk yield (MY). An inadequate nominal vacuum level (NVL) was one factor that influenced negatively SCC. The increase of SCC was more accentuated in those milking machines with high-lines than mid- and low-lines. MY was also negatively influenced by an inadequate high NVL. Higher MY value was found in those farms which had < 44 kPa NVL. In all cases, effective vacuum reserve deficit (EVRD) produced SCC above international recommendations. The EVRD effect was not significant (P > 0.05) on...

The occurrence of aflatoxigenic Aspergillus spp. in dairy cattle feed in Southern Brazil BJM
Variane,Augusto Carlos Favaretto; Santos,Fabiane Cristina dos; Castro,Fausto Fernandes de; Barbosa-Tessmann,Ione Parra; Santos,Geraldo Tadeu dos; Pozza,Magali Soares dos Santos.
ABSTRACT The presence of mycotoxins or related fungi in animal feed is a major problem for animal and human health. Silage and concentrated feed samples were collected from 21 dairy farms in the Western part of Paraná state in Southern Brazil. Water activity and pH of all samples were measured, and each sample was analyzed to check for the presence of aflatoxigenic Aspergillus. Water activity was observed to be lower in the concentrated feed samples. The pH was lower in the silage samples, indicating fermentation processes. Two silage samples and four concentrated feed samples were contaminated with Aspergillus spp. Seven isolates of Aspergillus spp. were obtained and their potential to produce aflatoxins was evaluated. Four of the isolates, two from the...

Chilled raw milk quality: a case study in Zona da Mata region, Minas Gerais State, Brazil Ciência Rural
Lima,Luiz Paulo de; Braga,Gustavo Bastos; Perez,Ronaldo; Carvalho,Antonio Fernandes de.
ABSTRACT: This paper aimed to analyze the evolution of the quality of raw milk produced by producers in the Zona da Mata region, in the state of Minas Gerais, between 2012 and 2018. For this purpose, we used the linear mixed-effects model to analyze the monthly evolution of the results of milk composition indicators (fat, protein, and defatted dry extract - DDE), somatic cell count - SCC, and total bacterial count - TBC, from the official monthly registry of 94 milk producers, suppliers of a region’s dairy. Results indicate a continuous reduction in the milk composition indicators between 2014 and 2018. For the SCC and TBC indicators, we identified only one-off reductions. The supply of a larger volume of milk was associated with increased TBC. Seasonality...

Bulk water charges in the dairy industry: A case study of interstate basins in Minas Gerais, Brazil Ciência Rural
Lima,Luiz Paulo de; Spletozer,Aline Gonçalves; Jacovine,Laércio Antônio Gonçalves; Carvalho,Antonio Fernandes de.
ABSTRACT: Water is an essential input for any agribusiness, used for various purposes such as hygiene procedures, heat exchangers and beverage formulation. Water charging, regulated in Brazil by the National Water Resources Policy (Federal Law 9.433/97), is an important issue for the food industry, since it may change the profile of food production costs. Thus, this article aimed to estimate the price increases in the dairy industry from the use of water charging and evaluate the potential benefit of this collection, comparing it to some planned investments in basins plans. We used a case study of a dairy that produced 1 t/d of mozzarella cheese in the state of Minas Gerais. Results indicated that water charging among the basins with current collection...

Zero-inflated Poisson regression models for QTL mapping applied to tick-resistance in a Gyr x Holstein F2 population Genet. Mol. Biol.
Silva,Fabyano Fonseca; Tunin,Karen P.; Rosa,Guilherme J.M.; Silva,Marcos V.B. da; Azevedo,Ana Luisa Souza; Verneque,Rui da Silva; Machado,Marco Antonio; Packer,Irineu Umberto.
Nowadays, an important and interesting alternative in the control of tick-infestation in cattle is to select resistant animals, and identify the respective quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and DNA markers, for posterior use in breeding programs. The number of ticks/animal is characterized as a discrete-counting trait, which could potentially follow Poisson distribution. However, in the case of an excess of zeros, due to the occurrence of several noninfected animals, zero-inflated Poisson and generalized zero-inflated distribution (GZIP) may provide a better description of the data. Thus, the objective here was to compare through simulation, Poisson and ZIP models (simple and generalized) with classical approaches, for QTL mapping with counting phenotypes...

Increased efficiency of straw utilisation by cattle and buffalo AgEcon
George, P.S..
The Australian Centre of International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) has sponsored several research projects with the aim of increasing the efficiency of straw utilisation by cattle and buffaloes in some Australian and Indian situations. These projects involved research on upgrading technology and field testing specific feed formulations to determine their impact on improving livestock production in India. This report contains an economic assessment of three interrelated projects supported by ACIAR over a period of nine years, starting 1983–84. Apart from validating the feasibility of improving the efficiency of strawbased diets through strategic supplements, the projects under review had played a significant role in the commercial introduction of urea...

Assessing Market Functioning: The Case of the Hungarian Milk Chain AgEcon
Hockmann, Heinrich; Voneki, Eva.
The paper discusses the impact of market power in the Hungarian milk chain. In a first step a vector error correction model is estimates to assess whether a domestic market for raw milk exists. Since the answer was positive we proceed by developing a structural market model of the Hungarian market for raw milk that is able to identify a possible affect of market power on resource allocation. A nonlinear 3SLS approach was applied to estimate the supply and the demand for raw milk. The results provide that despite the high concentration of in dairy processing the indications for market poser are rather limited. The “Bertrand like” equilibrium can be attributed to the low degree of capacity utilization in dairy processing and the marketing alternative of...

The New Zealand Dairy Cooperatives’ Adaptation to Changing Market Conditions AgEcon
Nilsson, Jerker; Ohlsson, Camilla.
This article examines the market conditions, the strategies, and the organizational structures of agricultural cooperatives. Based on the growing literature on cooperative organizational models, it is expected that the new organizational patterns in the New Zealand dairy cooperatives in the early 2000s are a consequence of market changes. Case studies of the three cooperatives are conducted, focusing on the organizational structures in terms of collective versus individualized attributes. The dissolution of the New Zealand Dairy Board created new market opportunities for the cooperatives. Hence, the co-operatives had reason to develop new market strategies, and in order to pursue these well, they changed their organizational structures. The observations...

Importance of Cost Offsets for Dairy Farms Meeting a Nutrient Application Standard AgEcon
Ribaudo, Marc; Agapoff, Jean.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires concentrated animal feeding operations to develop and implement a comprehensive nutrient management plan. Changes in manure management to meet nutrient application standards will generally increase production costs. Some of these costs can be offset by savings from replacing commercial fertilizer with manure nutrients, and through financial assistance programs such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). A manure application cost model was used to examine the costs to confined dairy farms of meeting nutrient application standards, and the ability of fertilizer offsets and EQIP to reduce these costs.

FINITE MIXTURE ESTIMATION OF SIZE ECONOMIES AND COST FRONTIERS IN THE FACE OF MULTIPLE PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGIES AgEcon
Smith, H. Arlen; Taylor, C. Robert.
Finite mixture estimation (FME) is compared to estimated generalized least squares (EGLS) in the estimation of economies of size and production cost frontiers for Alabama dairy farms. FME provides several unique insights into the economic forces behind recent changes in Alabama's dairy industry. FME provides estimation of a stochastic average cost frontier with known statistical properties, which it was not otherwise possible to obtain using available stochastic frontier estimation packages.

The Bargaining Strength of a Milk Marketing Cooperative AgEcon
Prasertsri, Peerapon; Kilmer, Richard L..
As a result of economies of size, food processors are generally large and few in number. These characteristics put processors at a bargaining advantage over independent farmers. Marketing cooperatives were established to counter the uneven bargaining position of individual farmers. This article investigates the relative bargaining strength of one milk marketing cooperative and several fluid milk processors. The Nash bargaining model can be used to analyze the negotiated price in the Florida fluid milk market which acts like a bilateral monopoly. The milk marketing cooperatives have bargained well with the milk marketing processors. The monthly bargaining strength of the Southeast Dairy Cooperative, Inc. (SDC), exceeds the monthly bargaining strength of the...

Regional Distribution of Short-Run, Medium-Run and Long-Run Quota Rents Across EU-15 Milk Producers AgEcon
Moro, Daniele; Nardella, Michele; Sckokai, Paolo.
This paper evaluates the distribution of short- and long-run marginal costs and quota rents across the EU-15 milk producers, by estimating a system of cost and input share equations on a panel data of dairy farms from 1996 to 2001. Regional and geographical location and the size of milk operations have been considered as the major factors affecting marginal costs. The results on quota rents highlights that Italian and Greek dairy farmers receive the highest economic rent (260 €/ton), while in Portugal the lowest (101 €/Kg) at least in the short-run. This is an indication that Italian and Greek milk supply would be the least 'sensitive' to a reduction in the intervention price. Several countries show negative long-run quota rents, indicating that in the...
