EFFECT OF ORGANIC LOAD AND ALKALINITY ON DAIRY WASTEWATER BIOMETHANATION REA
Kispergher,Eduardo M.; D'Aquino,Camila A.; Costa Junior,Luis C. da; Mello,Thiago C. de; Weinschutz,Regina; Mathias,Alvaro L..
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of variations in organic load (hydraulic retention times - HRTs: from 2 to 0.5 day) and in alkalinity (NaHCO3 from 4,000 to 1,000 mg.L−1) on methane production. Biomass of sewage sludge was inoculated and stabilized on 1" polypropylene rings. The rings were immersed in the liquid phase (8.41 L) of an upflow anaerobic filter reactor (12.22 L). A solution of 5 g of whole milk powder per liter was used to simulate effluent from the dairy industry. Process effectiveness was measured by chemical oxygen demand reduction, biogas production, and biogas methane content. Biogas production started at a 2-day HRT and synthetic effluent alkalinization with 4,000 mg.L−1 NaHCO3. The best operation condition was at 1-day...

フランス国中南部丘陵地帯の乳加工体系 : オーヴェルニュ地域圏の酪農家の事例から OAK
平田, 昌弘; 清田, 麻衣; Hirata, Masahiro; Kiyota, Mai.
The milk processing systems of 4 dairy farmers in the hilly terrain of south-central France were surveyed to clarify those characteristics and discuss the transition process of milk processing system in the cold and humid climate condition, of which the origin came from the dry areas of Asian Continent. The characteristics of milk processing system in the south-central France was the specialization for mature cheese making conducted by the technique of solidifying-additives using series. Although the technique of cream separating series had also been used in the region, all 4 dairy farmers don't currently adopt it because of its lower benefit than cheese making. Hence, butter was currently made not from cream, but from whey that was produced in cheese...

Supply Chain Issues in China’s Milk Adulteration Incident AgEcon
Gale, H. Frederick, Jr.; Hu, Dinghuan.
China’s melamine milk adulteration crisis highlights the challenges that arise as large well-capitalized companies procure raw materials from a diffused supply chain of scattered small farmers and milk collection stations. As milk prices climbed sharply in 2007 and companies branched out into new territories, intense competition for raw milk supplies strengthened incentives to water down and adulterate milk. Effective food safety measures must account for incentives, the distribution of market power in the supply chain and market dynamics.

An analysis of milk quota abolition impact on Scottish farmers’ behaviour AgEcon
Toma, Luiza; Barnes, Andrew Peter; Renwick, Alan W..
This paper analyses factors influencing Scottish dairy farmers’ intentions to change size of business in response to milk quota abolition. The analysis uses structural equation modelling and is based on survey data collected in 2009 through telephone interviews with 533 farmers. Results suggest that farmers who (1) intend to leave their farm to children; (2) have not inherited their farm from previous generation; (3) perceive a lower impact of milk quota abolition on business; (4) have less negative attitudes towards policies/regulations; and (5) perceived a lower influence of policies/markets on business during the past decade are most likely to increase farm size.

Internationalization and Corporate Success - Empirical Evidence from the European Dairy Sector AgEcon
Ebneth, Oliver; Theuvsen, Ludwig.
Increasingly, cooperatives in the agribusiness are being confronted with the globalization of agri-food markets. Cooperatives adapt to this development by internationalizing their activities. This paper presents a method of measuring the degree of internationalization (DoI) and its application to European cooperatives in the dairy sector. Then, the financial performance of these cooperatives is measured by applying balance sheet analysis. The paper ends with a discussion of why German cooperatives are noticeably less internationalized and show weaker financial performance than their European competitors.

Dairy productivity in the Waikato region, 1994-2007 AgEcon
Cameron, Michael P.; Bell, Kendon.
The dairy industry is a major contributor to both the New Zealand economy as a whole and to the Waikato regional economy in particular. The industry is experiencing a period of considerable change, with increases in dairy conversion, increased intensification, and increasing use of nitrogen fertilisers, each of which has an associated environmental cost. In this paper the productivity performance of the mature dairy industry in the Waikato region is investigated, using panel data at the sub-regional level from 1994 to 2007. Overall we show that, under a range of specifications, productivity growth independent of increasing land use and herd numbers has been significantly below the four percent industry target. This suggests that, if the four percent goal...

Administrative burdens and dairy industry competitiveness AgEcon
Bremmers, Harry J.; Poppe, Krijn J.; Wijnands, Jo H.M.; van der Meulen, Bernd M.J..
The goal of this paper is to assess the effect of regulatory burdens in the European dairy industry on its competitiveness. A theoretical foundation is provided by transaction cost economics and total quality management insights. The effects of legislation on administrative requirements and competitiveness are supposed to be mediated by impacts on innovativeness, company strategy, food safety system availability, as well as the available information & communication capabilities. We will connect to previous research (Wijnands et al., 2007) and the findings therein. Four sub-questions are addressed: • what is the relationship between administrative burdens, innovation and competitiveness? • what is the relationship between administrative burdens, food...

Agricultural policy (AP2011) Reform and the WTO: Potential Impacts on Swiss Agriculture AgEcon
Ferjani, Ali.
This article analyses the impact of the planned Swiss package of agricultural policy measures AP2011 and the tariff reductions scheduled as part of the WTO Doha Round, with special emphasis on effects in the dairy and meat sector. The simulations are carried out using an extended partial equilibrium model. This article discusses the anticipated impact of changing structural conditions on production, processing, consumption, prices and exports in the milk market. If account is taken of the Bilateral Agreements between Switzerland and the EU providing for liberalisation of the common cheese market, raw milk production increases by 10.5 %, whereas the milk price shows a significant drop to around 60 centimes per kilogram of milk. The abolition of subsidies...

DER SLOWAKISCHE MARKT FÜR MILCH UND MILCHPRODUKTE – VOM BEGINN DER TRANSFORMATION BIS ZUM EU-BEITRITT AgEcon
Glitsch, Kristina; Eerits, Alena.
Like in other CEEC, transition in the beginning of the 1990s had significant consequences for the agricultural and food sectors in Slovakia. For example, Slovakian consumers reacted to the abolition of consumer subsidies by drastically reducing their consumption of milk and milk products. Concurrently, milk production declined and now stands at fifty percent of its 1989 level. Dairies were closed down while those remaining carried on producing under constantly increasing overcapacities. In the years prior to EU accession, activities in the milk sector were primarily aimed at the adoption of EU standards. Meanwhile, the Slovakian milk processing industry is predominantly in the possession of foreign investors. Present per capita consumption of milk and milk...

The Adoption of Best-Management Practices by Louisiana Dairy Producers AgEcon
Rahelizatovo, Noro C.; Gillespie, Jeffrey M..
This study examines the adoption of best-management practices (BMPs) in terms of the total number of practices implemented up to a certain period, using count data analysis. Poisson and negative binomial regressions were used to examine the likely determinants of producers’ decisions to adopt greater numbers of technologies, and the specific case of dairy producers’ adoption of BMPs was explored. Our results emphasize the significant effect of producers’ awareness of the efforts to control non-point source pollution, information about BMPs, farms size, producer’s educational attainment, and risk aversion on the number of BMPs adopted.

The Canadian Dairy Commission: an empirical survey on its relevance in today's civil society AgEcon
Charlebois, Sylvain; Langenbacher, Wolfgang; Tamilia, Robert D..
The current function of the Canadian Dairy Commission (CDC) raises important public policy issues that have implications for wealth redistribution, administrative law, and civil liberty. The CDC's purported economic relevance in Canadian society serves as a facade for a short-sighted management approach that is devoid of the rudiments of a market mechanism. In order to suggest future public policy developments, an exploratory field survey was conducted and results are presented in this paper. Although the results do not infer that Canadian consumers are discontented with dairy prices in Canada, our evidence shows that consumers know very little about the processes behind marketing milk in Canada, especially with the price setting powers of the CDC. This...

ANÁLISE DA ESTRATÉGIA TECNOLÓGICA EM EMPRESAS AGROINDUSTRIAIS – O CASO DA COLASCRIC AgEcon
Queiroz, Timoteo Ramos; Machado, Joao Guilherme de Camargo Ferraz; Bouroullec, Melise Dantas Machado.
The aim of this paper is to analyze the technological management in a dairy industry, making it possible to suggest improvements. An open-ended questionnaire was applied, considering two main points: the classification and comprehension of the company’s performance in relation to the technologies available and the understanding of the industry’s technological motivations, making it possible to analyze technological behaviors, forms of acquisition and adoption of technological innovations. It was observed that the company loses competitiveness due to the technology adopted, when compared to bigger players and when the distribution of its products is carried out through supermarkets. The changes introduced in the products’ portfolio were of public-domain,...

AGRICULTURAL POLICY IN A VERTICAL STRUCTURE OF PRODUCTION WITH AN APPLICATION TO THE MILK INDUSTRY AgEcon
Bouamra, Zohra; Requillart, Vincent.
This paper analyzes the effects of policy instruments used in the dairy sector. The analysis considers the supply of milk, the processing step characterized by joint production and the final demand for processed goods. A short term partial equilibrium model is defined. We use it to determine the effects of different policy scenarios on price, production, consumption and exports for the different products. Because the GATT agreements imply a decrease in the volume of subsidized exports, we particularly analyze the impact of policy instruments on the exports of different milk products.
