Proposal of stages by controlling the efficiency analysis in sugar and ethanol mills Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
DUARTE,Alexandre; LEMOS,Stella Vannucci; SALGADO JUNIOR,Alexandre; SOUZA JUNIOR,Marco Antonio; DONEGÁ,Ricardo.
Abstract This study aimed to identify the main points of control in the efficiency of the productive process in sugarcane mills. Thus, a two-stage DEA approach applied for a sample of 121 mills, distributed among the seasons of 2010/2011 until 2014/2015. The first stage separated the efficient mills in transforming the total recovered sugar (TRS) of the processed sugarcane into sugar and ethanol, and the second stage identified significant production process variables in the efficiency with truncated regression. Besides, with the help of industry experts and statistical analysis, established 13 variables, which could control and increase the efficiency of the sugar and ethanol production processes, contributing to the overall efficiency of sugar and...

Quota Trading and Profitability: Theoretical Models and Applications to Danish Fisheries AgEcon
Andersen, Jesper Levring; Bogetoft, Peter.
Using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), we provide a framework to analyze the potential gains from quota trading. We compare the industry profit and structure before and after a free trade reallocation of production quotas. The effects of tradable production quotas depend on several technological and behavioral characteristics, including the ability to learn best practice (catch-up) and the ability to change the input and output composition (mix). To illustrate the usefulness of our approach, we analyze a dataset from the Danish fishery. We study the industry profit and structure under each of four sets of technological and behavioral characteristics.

Process Aggregation and Efficiency. AgEcon
Bogetoft, Peter.
We analyse how the aggregation of production processes affects efficiency evaluations. A production unit can be inefficient even though all its production processes are efficient. We show how to test if observed "inefficiencies" may be caused by an aggregation and how to correct efficiency measures for such aggregation generated inefficiencies. The tests and the adjusted efficiency measurement programs involve hypothetical dis-aggregations designed to put the evaluated unit in its best possible light.

Efficiency and Productivity Changes in the Indian Food Processing Industry: Determinants and Policy Implications AgEcon
Ali, Jabir; Singh, Surendra P.; Ekanem, Enefiok P..
This paper analyses efficiency and productivity changes in 12 broad segments of food manufacturing industries during pre and post liberalisation periods, covering a period of two decades, from 1980-1981 to 2001-2002. The nonparametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach is used to compute the Malmquist Total Factor Productivity (TFP) change, which has been further decomposed into efficiency and technical change. This paper also evaluates the performance of major inputs used in the food processing industry and identifies the causes of inefficiency across various segments. Based on the findings, the paper gives suggestions that can be used by policy makers and food processors in making decisions regarding various technical and managerial aspects to...

EFICIÊNCIAS DE ESCALA, SINERGIA E CONCENTRAÇÃO NO SETOR FRIGORÍFICO DE CARNE BOVINA: UMA APLICAÇÃO UTILIZANDO-SE A METODOLOGIA DEA AgEcon
Pitelli, Mariusa Momenti; Mendonca, Elvino De Carvalho.

Efficiency and Merger Gains in The Danish Forestry Extension Service AgEcon
Bogetoft, Peter; Strange, Niels; Thorsen, Bo Jellesmark.
In Denmark, many small-scale forest owners are affiliated to local district offices of The Danish Forestry Extension Service. Increasing economic pressure has caused a search for more efficiency in the Service, including potential reorganisation. In this paper, the efficiency of the different offices is evaluated using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to approximate their production technology. Furthermore, recent theoretical developments in DEA-analysis are used to assess the gains from a number of potential mergers, and to decompose these gains into those from technological improvements, harmony effects and scale effects. It is found that technological inefficiency is the major source of inefficiency, mergers are only favoured through harmony gains,...
