Two probiotics were tested as alternative treatment to limit the prevalence of the vertebral column compression syndrome (VCCS) in rainbow trout, compared with a preventive treatment with florfenicol. Either the antibiotic, or a lactic acid bacterium, Pediococcus acidilactici, or a yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii, was introduced into experimental diets, which were compared with the control diet without supplementation. The antibiotic caused some mortality during the first week after treatment, likely because of the toxicity of the compound. However, this antibiotic treatment limited the occurrence of VCCS to 3%, vs. 13% of fish affected in the control group. Pediococcus acidilactici provided the same level of protection as the antibiotic,... |

Two strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were tested as probiotics for rainbow trout fry, during the first month of feeding. Each strain was introduced into separate diets, at the rate of 106 CFU g− 1 and their effects were compared with those of a control diet. Two rearing conditions were simultaneously compared, to test the adaptability of the probiotic treatment. From start feeding onwards, the water supply came from either spring or river, resulting in two different temperature ranges, 11¿11.5 and 7¿8 °C respectively. Growth and development were optimal in spring water, while some delay was observed with colder river water. A slight but significant increase in mortality was also observed in the river group. In all groups, the counts of... |

The main goal of this work was to determine the effect of dietary live yeast Debaryomyces hansenii on the enzymatic antioxidative status of sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax larvae. Growth, activity and expression of the main antioxidative enzymes: catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), and heat shock protein (HSP70) were measured in sea bass larvae at 23 and 48 days after hatching. Larvae were fed on two microdiets: group one, fed microdiet containing live yeast and the control group fed microdiet without yeast. Heat shock protein 70 showed the same expression levels in both fish larvae fed yeast and the control diet. The group fed D. hansenii showed highest growth and lower activity and expression levels of GPX and SOD... |

The type species of the genus Debaryomyces, Debaryomyces hansenii, is a highly heterogeneous species. It has been isolated from a large diversity of natural sources including fruit, air, water, soil, but most frequently from processed food products. The species delineation of this yeast species urgently needs clarification. The heterogeneity in taxonomic characteristics has resulted in the description of varieties linked to D. hansenii. The aim of this study was to re-examine and classify D. hansenii using a polyphasic approach. A total of 65 D. hansenii isolates were examined, 57 representing the variety hansenii and nine the variety fabryi. The selection of strains for DNA reassociation and phylogenetic analysis was based on polymerase chain reaction... |
