Simulated decadal variability of the Meridional Overturning Circulation across the A25-Ovide section ArchiMer
Desbruyeres, Damien; Thierry, Virginie; Mercier, Herle.
Decadal changes of the Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC) at the A25-Ovide section between Portugal and Greenland are investigated in a numerical simulation forced by atmospheric reanalysis data for the period 1965-2004. The intensity, composition and structure of the upper MOC limb are assessed using a Lagrangian analysis tool. Its mean transport is fed by water masses of two distinct origins: the subtropics and the Labrador Sea. Two vertical overturning cells are consequently identified: a subtropical cell connecting low and high latitudes (12 Sv) and a cell internal to the subpolar gyre (4 Sv). The decadal MOC variability is associated with synchronized transport changes of the subtropical and subpolar inflow within the North Atlantic Current...

Subsurface structure of interannual temperature anomalies in the Australian sector of the Southern Ocean ArchiMer
Sokolov, S; Rintoul, Sr.
A 7 year time series of austral summer expendable bathythermograph (XBT) sections between Tasmania and Antarctica is used to describe the subsurface structure of Southern Ocean interannual temperature anomalies. Comparison of the discontinuous XBT record with a continuous (weekly average) satellite-based SST data set confirms that the XBT sampling is adequate to resolve interannual variability. Significant correlations are found between changes in surface and subsurface temperature along much of the section. In the Subantarctic zone, surface and subsurface changes are coherent because deep convection in winter homogenizes the upper 600 m, and the summer mixed layer temperature reflects the preconditioning of the previous winter. At other latitudes the...

Stratification structure in subtropical gyres and its decadal variability in the North Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Feucher, Charlene.
Subtropical gyres are central to the observed climate changes throughout the last decades. It is observed between the surface and the permanent pycnocline an intense increase in the ocean heat content. The permanent pycnocline delineates thus an important heat reservoir. The permanent pycnocline has a major role in preventing heat to reach the deep ocean and it thus of a relative importance in the context of climate change. For the first time and thanks to the development of the Argo array, we have been able to characterize the observed structure of the permanent pycnocline. The objective of this PhD thesis is to investigate the structure of the permanent pycnocline and its variability over the last decades. We developed an objective method to characterize...

Interior Water-Mass Variability in the Southern Hemisphere Oceans during the Last Decade ArchiMer
Portela, Esther; Kolodziejczyk, Nicolas; Maes, Christophe; Thierry, Virginie.
Using an Argo dataset and the ECCOv4 reanalysis, a volume budget was performed to address the main mechanisms driving the volume change of the interior water masses in the Southern Hemisphere oceans between 2006 and 2015. The subduction rates and the isopycnal and diapycnal water-mass transformation were estimated in a density-spiciness (sigma-tau) framework. Spiciness, defined as thermohaline variations along isopycnals, was added to the potential density coordinates to discriminate between water masses spreading on isopycnal layers. The main positive volume trends were found to be associated with the Subantarctic Mode Waters (SAMW) in the South Pacific and South Indian Ocean basins, revealing a lightening of the upper waters in the Southern Hemisphere....

Model derived uncertainties in deep ocean temperature trends between 1990-2010 ArchiMer
Garry, F. K.; Mcdonagh, E. L.; Blaker, A. T.; Roberts, C. D.; Desbruyères, Damien; Frajka-williams, E.; King, B. A..
We construct a novel framework to investigate the uncertainties and biases associated with estimates of deep ocean temperature change from hydrographic sections, and demonstrate this framework in an eddy‐permitting ocean model. Biases in estimates from observations arise due to sparse spatial coverage (few sections in a basin), low frequency of occupations (typically 5‐10 years apart), mismatches between the time period of interest and span of occupations, and from seasonal biases relating to the practicalities of sampling during certain times of year. Between the years 1990 and 2010, the modeled global abyssal ocean biases are small, although regionally some biases (expressed as a heat flux into the 4000 ‐ 6000 m layer) can be up to 0.05 W m−2. In this...
