Variabilidad climática, eficiencia de uso de agua intrínseca y crecimiento del área basal en Bosques del norte de México. Colegio de Postgraduados
Castruita Esparza, Luis Ubaldo.

Branch whorls of juvenile Araucaria araucana (Molina) Koch: are they formed annually? RChHN
LUSK,CHRISTOPHER H.; LE-QUESNE,CARLOS.
The growth of Araucaria araucana, like that of many other conifers, is characterised by the production of a monopodial stem with branch whorls. However, the periodicity of whorl formation in this species has not been subjected to systematic study. We used growth ring counts to determine the frequency of whorl formation in sun- and shade-grown juvenile A. araucana in a montane forest in the Chilean coast range. Whorls were not annual in any of the 35 individuals studied, growth rings outnumbering whorls by a factor of 1.8 to 3.9. The mean interval between successive whorls was significantly shorter in sun-grown (2.1 yrs whorl -1) than in shade-grown trees (2.6 yrs whorl-1), suggesting a relationship with plant carbon balance. Mean distance between whorls...

Assessment of the dendrochronological potential of Licaria bahiana Kurz, an endemic laurel of lowland Atlantic forests in Brazil Acta Botanica
Fontana,Cláudia; Santini-Junior,Luiz; Olmedo,Gabriela Morais; Botosso,Paulo César; Tomazello-Filho,Mario; Oliveira,Juliano Morales.
ABSTRACT The Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil has been considered to have the highest number of tree species per hectare in the world. Assessing the influence of climate on tropical tree species is a priority in the face of ongoing climate change, and for which dendrochronological studies have been important. We address the dendrochronological potential of Licaria bahiana Kurz (Lauraceae), an endemic species of the Atlantic forests. We studied growth ring anatomy of L. bahiana and applied dendrochronological methods to investigate how short-term variation in climate affect its radial growth. Distinct growth rings were observed in all individuals and demarcated by darker tangential fiber zones in latewood. Trees showed high climatic sensitivity (0.48)...

Occurrence of annual growth rings in Rhizophora mangle in a region with low climate seasonality Anais da ABC (AABC)
SOUZA,BRUNNA T.; ESTRADA,GUSTAVO C.D.; SOARES,MÁRIO L.G.; CALLADO,CÁTIA H..
ABSTRACT The formation of annual growth rings has been confirmed for several mangrove species in the last decade, among which is the Rhizophora mangle. However, the record of annual rings for this species was made in a region with high hydric seasonality, a widely recognized induction factor of annual rings in tropical species. In this sense, the present study aimed to verify the occurrence of annual growth rings in R. mangle in the mangroves of Guaratiba (Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil), a region with low hydric seasonality. For this purpose, the crossdating technique was applied in ten trees collected with known age (seven years). The growth rings are characterized by alternating layers of low vessel density (earlywood) and high vessel density...
