Impact of Sugarcane Delivery Schedule on Product Value at Raw Sugar Factories AgEcon
Salassi, Michael E.; Garcia, Mercedes; Breaux, Janis B.; No, Sung Chul.
Conversion to combine harvesters has resulted in Louisiana sugarcane growers delivering a more perishable product to raw sugar factories. Dextran formation increases as the time between harvest and milling is extended. Milling of freshly cut sugarcane reduces the formation of dextran and associated economic losses. One approach available to factories to reduce dextran formation is to extend the harvested sugarcane delivery schedule to the mill. A simulation model was developed to evaluate alternative delivery schedules at raw sugar factories. Economic losses in product value associated with dextran formation were estimated and compared for various extended delivery schedules.

Production, extraction and characterization of exopolysaccharides produced by the native Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides R2 strain Anais da ABC (AABC)
Paulo,Elinalva M.; Boffo,Elisangela F.; Branco,Alexsandro; Valente,Ângela M.M.P.; Melo,Itamar S.; Ferreira,Antonio G.; Roque,Milton R.A.; Assis,Sandra A. de.
The genus Leuconostoc belongs to a group of lactic acid bacteria usually isolated from fermented vegetables, which includes species involved in the production of exopolysaccharides (EPS). These biopolymers possess considerable commercial potential. Because of the wide variety of industrial applications of EPS, this study aimed to produce and characterize the native exopolysaccharide strain Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides R2, which was isolated from cabbage collected in a semi-arid region of Bahia. We employed the following conditions for the production of EPS: 10.7% sucrose, pH 8.2, without agitation and incubation at 28ºC for 30 hours. The fermentation broth was treated with ethanol and generated two types of polysaccharide substances (EPS I and EPS II)....

Qualitative and quantitative lymphoscintigraphy in the evaluation of lower limbs lymphedema BABT
Dalia,Roberta Maria; Martins,Gláucia Ribeiro P.; Barbosa,Rodolfo; Lima,Carla Flávia de; Siqueira,Cristiano Ferrari.
The purpose of this study was to prove the efficiency of qualitative and quantitative lymphoscintigraphy in the diagnosis of the lower extremity lymphedema. Seventy-seven patients had been studied, most of then (85.7%) were female. Patients’ ages ranged from 18 to 82 years. All patients underwent a bilateral lymphoscintigraphy. Images were recorded with a dual-detector instrument in the whole-body scanning mode. Feet and inguinal static views were acquired within 15 minutes and three hours after radiopharmaceutical injection. Two nuclear doctors evaluated the lymphoscintigrams qualitatively. Quantitative studies of the radiopharmaceutical absorption and the lymph node chain uptake were also obtained. Of the 154 evaluated members, 21.44% (n = 33) were...

Scale up of dextran production from a mutant of Pediococcus pentosaceus (SPAm) using optimized medium in a bioreactor BABT
Patel,Seema; Kothari,Damini; Shukla,Rishikesh; Das,Debasish; Goyal,Arun.
The mutant of Pediococcus pentosaceus (SPAm) produced earlier by UV-mutagenesis exhibiting higher dextransucrase activity as compared to wild-type was used. The generated mutant SPAm gave 12.2 mg/ml, a 20% higher dextran than wild-type. Response surface methodology was carried out for further enhancement of dextran production. To enhance dextran production by the mutant SPAm, Plackett-Burman Design and a 2² full factorial Central Composite Design was employed. After response optimization, the optimum concentration of sucrose and yeast extract was 5.115% (w/v) and 0.635% (w/v), respectively. The experimental values of dextran 36.0 mg/ml at flask level and 35.0 mg/ml at bioreactor level were in good agreement with the predicted value of 40.8 mg/ml. The...

Hind limb ischemic preconditioning induces an anti-inflammatory response by remote organs in rats BJMBR
Souza Filho,M.V.P.; Loiola,R.T.; Rocha,E.L.; Simão,A.F.L.; Gomes,A.S.; Souza,M.H.L.P.; Ribeiro,R.A..
Ischemic preconditioning (IPC), a strategy used to attenuate ischemia-reperfusion injury, consists of brief ischemic periods, each followed by reperfusion, prior to a sustained ischemic insult. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the local and systemic anti-inflammatory effects of hind limb IPC in male Wistar rat (200-250 g) models of acute inflammation. IPC was induced with right hind limb ischemia for 10 min by placing an elastic rubber band tourniquet on the proximal part of the limb followed by 30 min of reperfusion. Groups (N = 6-8) were submitted to right or left paw edema (PE) with carrageenan (100 µg) or Dextran (200 µg), hemorrhagic cystitis with ifosfamide (200 mg/kg, ip) or gastric injury (GI) with indomethacin (20 mg/kg, vo)....

Long-term ethanol intoxication reduces inflammatory responses in rats BJMBR
Carvalho,E.M.; Brito,G.A.C.; Pessoa,B.B.G.P.; Ribeiro,R.A.; Capaz,F.R..
The anti-inflammatory effects of long-term ethanol intoxication were determined during ethanol treatment and withdrawal on the basis of neutrophil and eosinophil migration, hind paw edema and mast cell degranulation. Male Wistar rats (180-200 g, around 2 months of age) were exposed to increasing concentrations of ethanol vapor over a 10-day period. One group was evaluated immediately after exposure (treated group - intoxicated), and another was studied 7 h later (withdrawal group). Ethanol inhalation treatment significantly inhibited carrageenan- (62% for the intoxicated group, N = 5, and 35% for the withdrawal group, N = 6) and dextran-induced paw edema (32% for intoxicated rats and 26% for withdrawal rats, N = 5 per group). Ethanol inhalation...
