Potential seed dispersal by Didelphis albiventris (Marsupialia, Didelphidae) in highly disturbed environment Biota Neotropica
Cantor,Mauricio; Ferreira,Letícia Andrade; Silva,Wesley Rodrigues; Setz,Eleonore Zulnara Freire.
Urban forests are usually isolated and highly disturbed, however they are important shelters for tolerant animal species. Their food habits expose the different ecological roles these animals perform in the habitat. We analyzed the contribution of Didelphis albiventris Lund (1840), as a seed disperser, to the vegetation renewal of an urban forest fragment, describing its frugivorous diet and testing the viability of ingested seeds. Both male and female of white-eared opossum included a vast variety of items in their diet, mainly invertebrates and fruits. Fruits were consumed during all year round and seasonality was not observed. The majority of consumed fruits was from pioneer plant species, which is common in disturbed areas, in accordance to the...

Are opossums a relevant factor associated with asymptomatic Leishmania infection in the outskirts of the largest Brazilian cities? BJID
Carranza-Tamayo,César Omar; Werneck,Guilherme Loureiro; Romero,Gustavo Adolfo Sierra.
Abstract A population survey was conducted to explore the prevalence and factors associated with Leishmania infection in the Fercal region of the Federal District. The Fercal region is a group of neighborhoods in Brasília in which the first cases of visceral leishmaniasis were described. Leishmania infection was established by a positive leishmanin test. Although other tests were performed in the study (an immunochromatographic assay (Kalazar detect®) and a molecular assay), only the leishmanin skin test provided sufficient results for the measurement of the disease prevalence. Data on the epidemiological, clinical and environmental characteristics of individuals were collected along with the diagnostic tests. After sampling and enrollment, seven hundred...

Mitochondrial genetic variability of Didelphis albiventris (Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae) in Brazilian localities Genet. Mol. Biol.
Sousa,Luciene C.C.; Gontijo,Célia M.F.; Botelho,Helbert A.; Fonseca,Cleusa G..
Didelphis albiventris is a well-known and common marsupial. Due to its high adaptability, this very widespread generalist species occurs under various environmental conditions, this even including protected regions and disturbed urban areas. We studied a 653 bp fragment of cytochrome oxidase c (COI) from 93 biological samples from seven Brazilian localities, with linear distances ranging between 58 and about 1800 km to analyze the effects of geographic distances on variability and genetic differentiation. The haplotype network presented nine haplotypes and two genetic clusters compatible with the two most distant geographic areas of the states of Minas Gerais, in the southeast, and Rio Grande do Sul, in the extreme south. As each cluster was characterized...

Tarragona,E.L.; Zurvera,D; Manzoli,D.E.; Correa,A.I.; Delgado,A.R.; Mastropaolo,M; Barengo,E; Beldomenico,P.M..

It takes more than large canines to be a sabretooth predator Mastozool. neotrop.
Chemisquy,M. Amelia; Prevosti,Francisco J.

Prevalence of Tetratrichomonas didelphidis from the Cecum of the Opossum Didelphis albiventris in the Botanical Garden, Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil OAK
Tasca, Tiawa; De Carli, Geraldo A; Clock, Luiz; Jeckel-Neto, Emilio A; Indrusiak, Cibele.
Tetratrichomonas didelphidis (Hegner and Ratcliffe 1927) Andersen and Reilly 1965 is a flagellate protozoan from the intestine, cecum and colon of Didelphis marsupialis Linnaeus, 1758. The prevalence of T. didelphidis in opossums D. albiventris was studied in the Botanical Garden, Porto Alegre City in the southernmost Brazilian State, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. T. didelphidi was found in seven of eight cultures of swabbed rectums, representing a prevalence of 87.5% in D. albiventris. In the present investigation it was observed that the T. didelphidis found in the intestine content of D. albiventris had the same morphological characteristics as those previously described by other authors in the D. marsupialis, being the same protozoan species in both host...
