Predation of Boana boans (Anura, Hylidae) by an opportunistic frugivorous primate Acta Amazonica
CAVALCANTE,Thiago; SIMÕES,Pedro Ivo; MOURTHE,Italo.
ABSTRACT Although relatively common among omnivorous primates, anurophagy is still poorly documented in frugivorous species. Here we report the predation of a giant gladiator treefrog (Boana boans) by a large arboreal frugivore, the gray woolly monkey (Lagothrix lagotricha cana). The predation event occurred in a stretch of riparian forest located in a fragmented region in Cacoal, Rondônia state, in southwestern Brazilian Amazonia. Anurans can be a profitable, non-contested, and relatively easily acquired alternative resource for gray woolly monkeys, helping to fulfill their demand for protein, especially in periods of fruit scarcity. This new record broadens the knowledge on the natural history and predators of the giant gladiator frog.

Reproductive and feeding biology of the common lancehead Bothrops atrox (Serpentes, Viperidae) from central and southwestern Brazilian Amazonia Acta Amazonica
BISNETO,Pedro Ferreira; KAEFER,Igor Luis.
ABSTRACT The pitviper Bothrops atrox is a widely distributed and medically important snake in Amazonia. Given that the reproductive and feeding biology of snakes varies geographically, we aimed to characterize the natural history of individuals from the central and southwestern portions of the biome. We analyzed museum-preserved specimens collected in the region between the metropolitan areas of the Brazilian cities of Manaus and Porto Velho. We took morphometric measurements and performed the analysis of gonads and digestive tracts of 109 individuals. Females attain sexual maturity with larger body sizes. Adults of the species show pronounced sexual dimorphism in body size, with females being larger. The reproductive cycle, especially in males, appears to...

Hundred legs good, two fangs better: adult centipede (Scolopendridae) devoured by a juvenile Amazon lancehead, Bothrops atrox (Viperidae) Acta Amazonica
SILVA,Karina Maria Pereira da; ALMEIDA-SANTOS,Selma Maria de; BERTANI,Rogério.
ABSTRACT Centipedes are part of the diet of several snake species of the genus Bothrops. However, reports on predation of centipedes by snakes are normally incomplete, and important data for natural history studies as the species identification and size of the prey are rarely published. The aim of this work was to report the presence of the centipede Scolopendra viridicornis in the digestive tract of the Amazon pit viper B. atrox. The snake specimen is an immature female from Aripuanã, state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, having a 623 mm snout-vent length. The centipede is an adult Scolopendra viridicornis, estimated to be 190 mm long, and found in the snake's stomach. The success in preying on this large and potentially dangerous centipede could be explained by...

The food spectrum of the cardinal - tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi, Characidae) in its natural habitat Acta Amazonica
Walker,Ilse.
The cardinal tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi) is the most intensively commercialized ornamental fish from the Rio Negro Basin (Amazonas State, Brasil). Analysis of the stomach and gut contents of fish caught in their natural habitats show conclusively that the cardinal is essentially a predator, feeding on the mesofauna that adheres to submerged litter, roots and waterplants. Microcrustacea and chironomid larvae (Diptera) were the most frequently ingested prey, while algae intake was relatively infrequent. It is argued that the relatively small size of the cardinals captured in their natural habitat is due to the annual migrations imposed by the inundation cycles, rather than to resource limitation, because it is known from earlier investigations of similar...

Feeding ecology of Serrasalmus gouldingi (Characiformes: Serrasalmidae) in the lower Anapu River region, Eastern Amazon, Brazil Acta Amazonica
PRUDENTE,Bruno da S.; CARNEIRO-MARINHO,Pedro; VALENTE,Roberta de M.; MONTAG,Luciano F. de A..
Abstract Studies on feeding ecology of fishes are important to understand the relationship between species and environmental seasonal variations. In tropical rivers, these relationships are mainly modeled by hydrological patterns. Thereby, this study aimed to assess the influence of fluviometric variation and life stage (juveniles and adults) in the feeding ecology of Serrasalmus gouldingi in the lower Anapu River region, located in Eastern Amazon, Pará, Brazil. Specimens were collected bimonthly, considering four different hydrological periods. We assessed the diet composition, feeding intensity and niche breadth of the species. Thirty-two dietary items were identified and grouped into ten categories. A total of 279 stomachs were analyzed, showing a...

DIET OF DIRECT-DEVELOPING FROGS (ANURA: CRAUGASTORIDAE: Pristimantis) FROM THE ANDES OF WESTERN COLOMBIA Acta biol.Colomb.
GARCIA-R,Juan Carlos; POSSO-GÓMEZ,Carmen Elisa; CÁRDENAS-HENAO,Heiber.
We studied the diet of 15 montane frog species of the genus Pristimantis (Craugastoridae) from the Andes of Western Colombia to determine the diet range, breadth of niche and overlap among species. We identified 499 prey items from stomach and intestinal contents of 154 specimens. Prey items were included in 74 different categories. The most common 15 prey categories accounted for 65 % of all frogs' diet. The invertebrate families Isotomidae, Chironomidae, Formicidae, and Tipulidae were the most abundant categories and accounted for 32 % of the frogs' diet. Ten of the 15 frog species were found with at least one item of Araneae. Coleoptera and Tipulidae were found in nine frog species, and Acari and Carabidae in eight frog species. In general, beetles were...

PREDATORY INTERACTION BETWEEN TWO ANURAN SPECIES WITH Thamnodynastes chaquensis (COLUBRIDAE) IN THE BRAZILIAN CERRADO Acta biol.Colomb.
DIAS-SILVA,Fernanda; Murillo Peixoto COUTO,Rodney; Maiara Cabrera,MIGUEL; ADAMS,Guilherme Brad; BÜHLER,Daniel; PEREIRA,Elvis Almeida.
ABSTRACT Although predatory events are uncommon to be recorded in nature, these data are important tools for understanding prey-predator interaction of the involved species. Snakes of genus Thamnodynastes are known for having an anuran diet, including some species of hylid frogs in their diet. Despite this, this pattern does not include T. chaquensis since there are no records on predation or trophic interaction with hylid frogs. Here, we report the first predatory interaction between T. chaquensis and two hylid frogs in Brazilian Cerrado. The first predation event with treefrog Boana caiapo occurred with success but, the second with B. albopunctata did not. Connecting trophic links within an ecosystem requires in-depth knowledge of its species and their...

The effect of feed restriction on the fat profile of Santa Inês lamb meat Animal Sciences
Madruga, Marta Suely; Kênia Alves Bezerra, Taliana; Conceição Dantas Guerra, Ingrid; Batista, Ana Sancha Malveira; Marcos de Azevedo Silva, Aderbal; Fernandes, Rafaella de Paula Paseto.
Consumers today are increasingly more demanding regarding their food, seeking healthier and better quality products, and in this context animal nutrition plays a key role. The meat composition can be altered by animal feed itself, being that lipid profile may directly contribute to consumer health, reducing the predisposition of developing cardiovascular diseases, main cause of mortality in the world. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the effect of dietary feed restriction in Santa Inês lambs on their intramuscular, intermuscular, and subcutaneous fat profile, fat profile of the longissimus thoracis et lumborum (LTL) muscle, and the total meat lipids and cholesterol. Three groups of lambs were subjected to diets: without restriction (WR), and 30...

Alves, Gustavo Henrique Zaia; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Tófoli, Raffael Marcos; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Novakowski, Gisele Caroline; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Hahn, Norma Segatti; UEM.
This study investigated the feeding habits of Serrapinnus microdon and S. calliurus and possible seasonal differences (rainy and dry seasons) in the utilization of food. The fish were collected monthly in Cancela stream, in the basin of the Manso/Cuiabá rivers in the State of Mato Grosso, from March 2003 to February 2004. Both species preferentially consumed resources of autochthonous origin, independently of the season. The diet of S. microdon was basically composed by immature forms of aquatic insects, with Chironomidae and Ephemeroptera predominating during the entire study period, thus showing a restricted diet (Ba = 0.27 in the rainy season, and 0.29 in the dry season). For S. calliurus, aquatic insects (especially Ephemeroptera) were equally...

Dental occlusal surface area in relation to body mass, food habits and other biological features in fossil xenarthrans Ameghiniana
Vizcaíno,Sergio F.; Bargo,M. Susana; Cassini,Guillermo H..
The Xenarthra includes the most intriguing mammals from the Cenozoic of South America: the glyptodonts (Cingulata) and the ground sloths (Tardigrada). Their masticatory apparatuses are diverse and peculiar, with a strongly reduced, hypselodont dentition that lacks enamel and displays different degrees of lobation. The goal of this study is to investigate the relationship between dental occlusal surface area (OSA) and diet, and other physiological factors in fossil xenarthrans. Over one hundred and fifty specimens, including living herbivorous epitherians and both extinct and living xenarthrans, were measured and photographed, and their OSA estimated and plotted against body mass. For most fossil xenarthrans OSA is smaller than expected for extant...

Tooth Root Size, Chewing Muscle Leverage, and the Biology of Homunculus patagonicus (Primates) from the late early Miocene of Patagonia Ameghiniana
Perry,Jonathan M. G.; Kay,Richard F.; Vizcaíno,Sergio F.; Bargo,M. Susana.
Inferences about the diet of Miocene platyrrhine monkeys have relied upon the morphology of the molar teeth, specifically the crests on the molars. Using a library of Micro-CT images of a broad comparative sample of living platyrrhines (callitrichines, cebines, pitheciids and atelids), late early Miocene Homunculus, and the early Miocene Tremacebus and Dolichocebus, we extend these inferences by examining the surface areas of the tooth roots, anchor points for the periodontal ligaments. From muscle scars on the skull, we estimate the mechanical leverage of the chewing muscles at bite points from the canine to the last molar. Extant platyrrhines that gouge bark to obtain exudates do not have especially large canine roots or anterior premolar roots compared...
