Self-sampling of cod in the Celtic Sea ArchiMer
Bellail, Robert; Peronnet, Isabelle; Rochet, Marie-joelle; Lamothe, Julien.
Since 2003, the application of restrictive TAC for cod in area VIIb-k has led some French Professional Organisations to manage their restrictive quota by imitations of landings by trip or period or by prohibiting the landings of the smallest commercial category. In consequence of that, le level of discarding has increased by high grading practice. In the lack of available and reliable data to estimate the level of discarding and the amount of discarded fish, the assessment of Celtic Sea Cod in Divisions VIIe-k has been in recent years more and more uncertain, especially in estimating younger year classes, for a fishery which can be qualified as a recruitment fishery. On a Professional Organisation (PMA= Pêcheries Manche-Atlantique) initiative and in the...

The European Landing Obligation. Reducing Discards in Complex, Multi-Species and Multi-Jurisdictional Fisheries ArchiMer
Uhlmann, Sven Sebastian; Ulrich, Clara; Kennelly, Steven J.
This open access book provides a comprehensive examination of the European Landing Obligation policy from many relevant perspectives. It includes evaluations of its impacts at economical, socio-cultural, ecological and institutional levels. It also discusses the feasibility and benefits of several potential mitigation strategies. The book was timely published, exactly at the time where the Landing Obligation was planned to be fully implemented. This book is of significant interest to all stakeholders involved, but also to the general public of Europe and to other jurisdictions throughout the world that are also searching for ways to deal with by-catch and discard issues.

Etude d'une gestion optimale des pecheries de langoustine et de poissons demerseaux en Mer Celtique. Tome 1 ArchiMer
Charuau, Anatole; Biseau, Alain.
The entire study is divised into three parts : Phase 1 - Collection of data and description of fisheries. Phase 2 - Diagnosis on the exploitation level for the main species. Phase 3 - Fleets analysis and simulation of the exploitation of the fishery. In addition to the description of the fisheries, in the first part, a very cheap method for the study of discards is described for all species and all fleets, the purpose being to use length cohorts analysis according to the JONES'method (1981). Preliminary works on monks, megrim and cuckoo ray are also presented.

The French experience in sampling discards at sea in the European waters ArchiMer
Tetard, Alain; Gaudou, Olivier; Lespagnol, Patrick; Peronnet, Isabelle; Rochet, Marie-joelle; Vigneau, Joel.
This study covered a one year period using onboard observers (117 days at sea). The aim was to sample "métiers" known for their discarding side effects: fixed netting, inshore and offshore trawling. The objectives were (i) the collection of information on the demographic structure of the catches for the main exploited species and (ii) the identification of factors explaining discards, in order to find relevant management measures

Etude d'une gestion optimale des pecheries de langoustine et de poissons demerseaux en mer Celtique. Tome 2 ArchiMer
Charuau, Anatole; Biseau, Alain.
The theory of the evaluation of discards applied in phase 1 to the main eight species is described. Then, for each one, the biological parameters are calculated and diagnosis based on length cohorts analysis JONES (1981) are proposed The gadoids, whiting and cod, are heavily exploited and the catches are always recruitment dependant. The bottom species (monks, megrim, rays and Nephrops) are fully exploited or lightlhy over - exploited. Using the fisheries statistics of the data basis about the Celtic Sea, a first classification of fleets is proposed with the individual fishing powers.

Évaluation des rejets sur la pêcherie de langoustine de Mer celtique ArchiMer
Charuau, Anatole.
If Sea Bass fish farming (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) is currently experiencing an increase in Southern Europe, it is vital, in order to better reflect raising structures, to control its wastes. In order to do so, quantifying this species' wastes is essential to be able to present simple excretion ratios, easily useable by the farmer. Those ratios have been based on nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon masses established on intensive farming and 4 batches belonging to his stock (averaging 24, 5 to 362, 5 g). Each batch was followed up during the course of 1 month and fish farming in its entirety for 2 months. Mass assessments for nitrogen and phosphorus were level ((intrants = extrants) but never precise, contrary to what can be found in bibliography. The main...

Discarding of cod in the Danish Fully Documented Fisheries trials ArchiMer
Ulrich, Clara; Olesen, Hans Jakob; Bergsson, Heidrikur; Egekvist, Josefine; Hakansson, Kirsten Birch; Dalskov, Jorgen; Kindt-larsen, Lotte; Storr-paulsen, Marie.
Denmark was the first nation in Europe to promote the use of Fully Documented Fisheries (FDF) through Remote Electronic Monitoring (REM) and CCTV camera systems, with pilot schemes in place since 2008. In theory, such a scheme could supplement and even potentially replace expensive control and monitoring programmes; and when associated with a catch quota management (CQM) system, incentivize positive changes in fishing patterns in a results-based management approach. New data flows are, however, required to ensure the practical implementation of such a scheme. This paper reviews the quality of the FDF data collected during 2008-2014 and their potential in strengthening information on cod discards. The analyses demonstrate the improved reporting of discards...

Identification of informative performance traits in swine using principal component analysis Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Barbosa,L.; Lopes,P.S.; Regazzi,A.J.; Guimarães,S.E.F.; Torres,R.A..
Using principal component analysis, records of 435 animals from an F2 swine population were used to identity independent and informative variables of economically important performance. The following performance traits were recorded: litter size at birth (BL), litter size at weaning (WL), teat number (TN), birth weight (BW), weight at 21 (W21), 42 (W42), 63 (W63) and 77 (W77) days of age, average daily gain (ADG), feed intake (FI) and feed:gain ratio (FGR) from 77 to 105 days of age. Six principal components expressed variation lower than 0.7 (eigen values lower than 0.7) suggesting that six variables could be discarded with little information loss. The discarded variables present significant simple linear correlation with the retained variables. Retaining...
