The True Story of Why Chickens Cross The Road: Consumer Demand, Processor Growing Contracts and Market Regulation in the Australian Chicken Meat Industry AgEcon
Ronan, Glenn; Cox, Greg; Howlett, Simon.
The Australian chicken meat industry is part of a worldwide marketing phenomenon where chickens are 'crossing the road' in record numbers in response to consumer demand and efficient 'farm to food' systems. Processor vertical integration is at the heart of system efficiency, with farmer growing services secured by exclusive contracts. However, vertically integrated “tied” growers have limited ability to enter into true negotiations with processors, prompting the search for a scheme that balances the need to foster true negotiation against market freedom and compliance with National Competition Policy. U.S. Canadian Agricultural Trade Conflicts: Time for a New Paradigm AgEcon
Young, Linda M..
Relations in cattle and beef trade between Canada and the United States have been tense in the past few years, despite the fact that few barriers to trade remain and that the markets are well integrated. The antidumping and countervailing duty suits brought by a group of U.S. ranchers against imports of Canadian live cattle are likely to be unproductive in facilitating the resolution of remaining issues between the industries. The Canadian and U.S. cattle and beef industries have numerous cooperative interests that provide a basis for a binational commodity group. Alternative methods of resolving trade disputes merit investigation.

Beierle, Thomas C.; Cayford, Jerry.
Public participation has become an integral part of environmental policymaking. Dispute resolution-with its focus on deliberation, problem solving, and consensus seeking among a small group of people-is one of the alternatives decision-makers increasingly turn to for involving the public. This paper evaluates dispute resolution as a form of public participation by measuring its success against five "social goals": incorporating public values into decisions, increasing the substantive quality of decisions, resolving conflict, building trust, and educating the public. The data for the analysis come from a "case survey," in which researchers read and coded information on more than 100 attributes of 239 published case studies of public involvement in...
