Microalterations in the third eyelid gland of dogs with keratoconjunctivits sicca secondary to distemper Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Brito,F.L.C.; Silva Júnior,V.A.; Maia,F.C.L.; Pereira Junior,J.R.; Laus,J.L..
Keratoconjunctivitis sicca is characterized by qualitative or quantitative abnormalities in the aqueous component of the tear film and is frequent in dogs with distemper. Twenty-eight third eyelid glands of end-stage dogs that died from distemper were analyzed by light microscopy. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca was diagnosed based on ophthalmic findings regarding alterations in the ocular surface and by the Schirmer tear test. The excised glands were fixed in 10% buffered formalin and processed for embedding in paraffin. The blocks were cut into 4µm sections and the sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and Masson's trichrome. Analysis revealed tubuloacinar gland atrophy, thickening of connective tissue, and mild to intense inflammatory exudation mainly...

Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) on domestic dogs in Serra de Caldas Novas State Park, Goiás: epidemiological aspects Biota Neotropica
Queirogas,Vera Lúcia de; Oliveira,Liliane Martins de; Marques,Renata Leal; Oliveira,Diego Silva Freitas; Szabó,Matias Pablo Juan.
We herein report tick (Acari: Ixodidae) infestation of four domestic dogs wandering inside Serra de Caldas Novas State Park, Goiás. Twenty seven ticks were collected from these hosts along nine days in November 2008. Ticks were identified as adults of Amblyomma cajennense, Amblyomma ovale, Amblyomma tigrinum and Rhipicephalus sanguineus as well as Amblyomma spp. nymphs. One of the dogs displayed facial myoclonus, a symptom of canine distemper. Such disease is a serious viral and contagious disease of dogs and also of several wild animals. Overall tick species found on dogs clearly showed the transit of these hosts between the natural areas of the park and anthropic areas, urban or rural. Such situation illustrates the potential of dogs to transmit...

Identification of enteric viruses circulating in a dog population with low vaccine coverage BJM
Alves,Christian D.B.T.; Granados,Oscar F.O.; Budaszewski,Renata da F.; Streck,André F.; Weber,Matheus N.; Cibulski,Samuel P.; Pinto,Luciane D.; Ikuta,Nilo; Canal,Cláudio W..
ABSTRACT Although the use of vaccines has controlled enteric diseases in dogs in many developed countries, vaccine coverage is still under optimal situation in Brazil. There is a large population of nonimmunized dogs and few studies about the identification of the viruses associated with diarrhea. To address this situation, stool samples from 325 dogs were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction for the detection of common enteric viruses such as Canine adenovirus (CAdV), Canine coronavirus (CCoV), Canine distemper virus (CDV), Canine rotavirus (CRV) and Carnivorous protoparvovirus 1 (canine parvovirus 2; CPV-2). At least one of these species was detected in 56.6% (184/325) of the samples. The viruses detected most frequently in either diarrheic or...
