Fruit biometry and seed germination of Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassm Acta Botanica
Goudel,Flora; Shibata,Marília; Coelho,Cileide Maria Medeiros; Miller,Paul Richard Momsen.
Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassm. is a species native to Brazil that is of ecological and aesthetic importance. This study aims to describe the biometric characteristics of S. romanzoffiana fruits and to assess the effects that treatments meant to overcome dormancy and partial drying have on seed germination. For biometric characterization, each repetition consisted of 50 fruits from eight clusters (total, 400 fruits). To evaluate methods for overcoming dormancy, seeds representative of populations were treated by perforation of the operculum; perforation of the operculum and immersion in water for 24 hours; cracking; exposure to fire for three minutes; and non-removal of fibers. There was also a control group. In a second experiment, seeds were...

Seed traits of species from South Brazilian grasslands with contrasting distribution Acta Botanica
Martins,Alexandre Cristante; Marchioretto,Rafaella Migliavacca; Vieira,Ariane Tonetto; Stiehl-Alves,Eudes Maria; Santos,Eliane Kaltchuk dos; Souza-Chies,Tatiana Teixeira de.
ABSTRACT South Brazilian grasslands are among the most species-rich grasslands worldwide yet they have been suffering ongoing degradation due to land-use. Little is known about the reproductive ecology of the native species of these grasslands. Thus, our goal was to characterize seed traits and germination requirements of three native species of the tribe Tigridieae (Iridaceae, Iridoideae) due to its richness in the Pampa biome and the contrasting morphology, cytogenetics, and geographic distributions of its representatives. We tested if closely related species possess similar seed traits and whether species with wider distributions have broader germination requirements. Seed production and mass were estimated, and morphological analyses, germination...

Can “Caricia” and “Princesa” apples be considered low-chilling cultivars? Agronomy
Castro, Damián César; Alvarez, Norma; Gabriel, Paola; Buyatti, Marcela; Favaro, Juan Carlos; Gariglio, Norberto.
The purpose of this work was to study the response of two apple cultivars bred for low chilling environments to artificial chilling accumulation. Two trials were carried out; in experiment one, excised shoots were randomly taken from “Caricia” and “Princesa”, and in experiment two, intact and excised shoots of “Caricia”, “Princesa” and “Gala” (control) were collected. After collection, both shoot types were exposed to artificial chilling accumulation (4.0 ± 0.5°C) from 0 to 1200 chill units (CU). Bud break of mixed buds of “Caricia” and “Princesa” was higher than 50% between 0 CU to 1200 CU, irrespective of shoot type. Bud break of “Gala” mixed buds exceeded 50% only in intact shoots after accumulating 900 CU. The mean time to bud break of “Caricia” and...

Germination and emergence of passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) seeds obtained by self- and open-pollination Agronomy
Santos, Carlos Eduardo Magalhães dos; Morgado, Marcos Antônio Dell'Orto; Matias, Rosana Gonçalves Pires; Wagner Júnior, Américo; Bruckner, Claudio Horst.
Seed dormancy is an important adaptive mechanism in many species and is generally lost during plant domestication because of selection that occurs through the collection and planting of seeds. We compared germination and seedling emergence in selfed and open-pollinated progenies obtained from eight passion fruit vines (genotypes). Self-pollination was performed at the button stage to overcome self-incompatibility. The experiment was a randomized block design in a factorial scheme (2 x 8; type of progeny x genotypes) with four replicates and 50 seeds per experimental unit. At 14, 21 and 28 days after sowing, the germination percentage and the emergence speed index were analyzed. The total length of seedlings (cm), shoot length (cm), radicle length (cm) and...

Physiological quality of castor bean seed genotypes stored at two temperatures Agronomy
Drumond, Anailda Angélica Lana; Sales, Juliana de Fatima; Zuchi, Jacson; Camelo, Gessimar Nunes; Souza, Moara Mariely Vinhais.
Environment and storage time influence stored seed quality, especially for oilseeds such as castor beans because they have a high lipid content and are more prone to deterioration. This study evaluated the physiological quality of seeds from three castor bean genotypes stored at 10 and 20°C for 300 days. The experimental design was completely randomized, with 4 replications, in a 2 x 6 (2 temperatures x 6 storage periods) split-plot design. The seeds were placed in low-density polypropylene bags and stored in climatic chambers at 10 and 20°C, in which the temperature and relative humidity were registered. Physiological quality (germination, germination rate index, emergence, rate of emergence, electrical conductivity and accelerated aging) were evaluated...

Southern highland papaya (Vasconcellea quercifolia A. St.-Hil.): Do fruit ripening and harvesting time affect seed germination? Agronomy
Urtasun, María Manuela; Giamminola, Eugenia Mabel; Viana, Marta Leonor de.
In this work, we report the effects of the harvesting time, the stages in fruit ripening and the influence of potassium nitrate in V. quercifolia seed germination. In addition, information about the storage period and light requirements is provided. Fruits were harvested at the beginning and at the end of the fruiting season, and they were classified into five ripening categories. Seed germination was evaluated with two factorial experiments: 1) harvesting time, fruit ripening, and pre-germination treatment; 2) storage and light requirements. The response variables were germination percentage, mean germination time, and seedling vigor. Seeds harvested at the beginning of the season appeared to be less dormant and they were not influenced by fruit ripening...

Pio, Rafael; Souza, Filipe Bittencourt Machado de; Kalcsits, Lee; Bisi, Rayane Barcelos; Farias, Daniela da Hora.
The present study aimed to review the advances in the production of temperate fruits to determine future research directions that improve production in the tropics. Temperate fruits are no longer only produced in regions characterized by a cold winter period. These fruits are also produced in the sub-tropical and tropical regions characterized by mild winter or even the absence of chilling conditions often required by the tree to break dormancy. Currently, temperate fruit production is possible in certain regions of South America, Africa and Asia that are near to the Equator. However, temperate tree fruit production in tropical regions requires modified techniques to overcome dormancy and allow adequate flowering, growth and productivity. The main...

Effective microorganisms inoculant: Diversity and effect on the germination of palisade grass seeds Anais da ABC (AABC)
SANTOS,LIDIANE F. DOS; LANA,ROGÉRIO P.; SILVA,MARLIANE C.S. DA; VELOSO,TOMÁS G.R.; KASUYA,MARIA CATARINA M.; RIBEIRO,KARINA G..
Abstract Effective microorganisms (EM) are inoculants formed by fungi and bacteria isolated from soil. EM are commonly used by farmers on agronomic crops to stimulate plant growth, but their composition and their benefits has been controverted. This study aimed to analyze the diversity of microorganisms growing in three EM inoculants, as well as to evaluate their efficiency in the germination of palisade grass seeds. The total DNA of the three EM inoculants was extracted, the 16S rRNA and ITS genes were amplified by PCR and sequenced on the Illumina MiSeq platform. Germination tests were conducted with three type of the EM, in three concentration and two times of the immersion. The bacterial group was the most abundant in EM, followed by fungi. Bacterial...

Germination in seed species ingested by opossums: implications for seed dispersal and forest conservation BABT
Cáceres,Nilton Carlos; Monteiro-Filho,Emygdio Leite de Araújo.
Seed germination in plant species consumed by opossums, genus Didelphis, was investigated in southern Brazil, in order to improve knowledge of the strategies of zoochorous plants in the Neotropics. Seeds were obtained from opossum feces. Thirteen of the most frequent species in the diet of local opossums were tested for germination rates and germination responses under different qualities (red/far red ratio) and different intensities of light. Most seeds from feces germinated similarly to the control groups, except for seeds of Rubus rosifolius, which appeared to depend on gut passage. Other experiments revealed that most seeds in the opossums' diet were of pioneer species, with most germination occurring during favorable humid conditions in the rainy...

Dormancy breaking and germination of Enterolobium contortisiliquum (Vell.) Morong seed BABT
Malavasi,Ubirajara Contro; Malavasi,Marlene de Matos.
Enterolobium contortisiliquum (Vell.) Morong. is a Mimosaceae tropical tree species recommended for heterogeneous reforestation of degraded tropical areas. "Timburi" seeds present low germination due to the high degree of seed dormancy. Different methods to overcome seed dormancy was compared: sanding, sanding followed by 24 hours water (25ºC) soaking, imbibition in boiling water followed by exposure to water at room temperature (28ºC), and concentrated sulfuric acid (5, 15, 30, 60, 120 or 180 minutes) followed by washing with tap water. All seeds were germinated in rolled towels at 25ºC and 12 hours photoperiod. Total germination, first count of germination test and germination velocity index were recorded. Mechanical scarification (sanding), chemical...

Heart rate and body weight alterations in juvenile specimens of the tropical land snail Megalobulimus sanctipauli during dormancy BJMBR
Rizzatti,A.C.S.; Romero,S.M.B..
The time course of heart rate and body weight alterations during the natural period of dormancy were determined in active feeding and dormant juvenile specimens of Megalobulimus sanctipauli. In both groups, heart rate markedly decreased during the first 40 days of dormancy, tending to stabilize thereafter. This time period coincided with the decrease in environmental temperature during autumn-winter. At the end of the dormancy period, surviving active feeding and dormant snails showed a significant decrease in heart rate which, however, was significantly greater in the latter group. Total body weight decreased concomitantly with heart rate in dormant snails but remained constant in active feeding snails. Body hydration induced significant increases in...

Dormancy models for Mycobacterium tuberculosis: A minireview BJM
Alnimr,Amani M..
Dormancy models for Mycobacterium tuberculosis play important roles in understanding various aspects of tuberculosis pathogenesis and in the testing of novel therapeutic regimens. By simulating the latent tuberculosis infection, in which the bacteria exist in a non-replicative state, the models demonstrate reduced susceptibility to antimycobacterial agents. This minireview outlines the models available for simulating latent tuberculosis both in vitro and in several animal species. Additionally, this minireview discusses the advantages and disadvantages of these models for investigating the bacterial subpopulations and susceptibilities to sterilization by various antituberculosis drugs.

Possible involvement of proteasome activity in ethylene-induced germination of dormant sunflower embryos Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Borghetti,Fabian; Noda,Fabio Nakamura; Sá,Cezar Martins de.
Freshly harvested sunflower seeds (Helianthus annuus L., Asteraceae) present physiological dormancy localized at the embrionary axis which prevents germination at low temperatures. However, dormant embryos reach about 100 % germination when incubated with the phytohormone ethylene during imbibition. To examine whether proteinase activities are implicated in the breaking of dormancy by ethylene, dormant embryos were treated with the proteinase inhibitors leupeptin, E64 and the proteasome specific inhibitor clasto-lactacystin ß-lactone (lactacystin). A few embryos (< 10 %) germinated at 10 ºC in absence of ethylene but ethylene-treated embryos reached high germinability (~90 %) in the presence of leupeptin, E64, water and DMSO. On the other hand,...

Germination of dormant seeds of Stylosanthes humilis as promoted by ethylene accumulation in closed environments Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Ribeiro,Dimas Mendes; Barros,Raimundo Santos.
Germination of scarified dormant seeds of Townsville stylo (Stylosanthes humilis) is very low in Petri dishes, but may be appreciable in sealed Erlenmeyer flasks if ethylene accumulates in their atmospheres. When ethylene in the flask atmosphere was fixed by a mercuric perchlorate solution, emanation of the gaseous regulator and germination of dormant seeds were drastically decreased. On the other hand, ethylene produced by dormant seeds and accumulated in the flask atmosphere led to a further enhancement of ethylene accumulation and a corresponding increased seed germination. Germination of both dormant and non-dormant seeds did not occur when ethylene biosynthesis was completely blocked.

Seed germination in Cerrado species Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Zaidan,Lilian B. P.; Carreira,Rosana C..
The aim of this review is to comment on the available data about germination of seeds from herb, shrub and tree species of the Cerrado after the publication of the review written by Felippe and Silva in 1984. Studies on seed germination of herbaceous species focused mainly on the responses of seeds to light, different ranges of temperature and storage in the soil. The majority of seeds from herb species germinate between 20°C and 30°C, and are photoblastic. Alternate temperatures favored germination in some seeds, but changed light sensitivity of the achenes of Bidens gardneri. Seeds of most of the shrub species of Melastomataceae are positive photoblastic; among the Velloziaceae, germination in the dark was observed in some species. Other shrub species...

Methods to Break Seed Dormancy of Rhynchosia capitata, a Summer Annual Weed Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Haider Ali,Hafiz; Tanveer,Asif; Ather Nadeem,Muhammad; Naeem Asghar,Hafiz.
Dormancy of weed seeds is a significant feature contributing to their survival rate since it helps the weeds to avoid herbicides and other weeding practices along with unfavorable environmental conditions. We investigated the effects of different dormancy breaking treatments on the germination of Rhynchosia capitata, a common summer annual weed, which is emerging as a weed threat in Pakistan. Seeds were soaked in thiourea, KNO3, HCl, HNO3, and H2SO4, and they were also mechanically scarified (sandpaper). Results indicated that R. capitata seeds show signs of physical dormancy that is mainly due to the impermeability of their coat. Mechanical scarification and acid scarification (soaking of seeds in H2SO4 for 60 and 80 min and in HCl for 12 and 15 h) were...

Importance of Abscisic Acid (ABA) in the In Vitro Conservation of Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Barrueto Cid,L. Pedro; Carvalho,Luiz L.C.B.
The conventional technology for in vitro plant conservation for cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) germplasm collections is laborious due to the need for several sub-culturing procedures per year. This practice implies high costs for medium preparation, tissue culture tubes, time-consuming labor, risks of contamination, mislabeling of accession, and the need for large growth chambers. We have developed a new procedure using in vitro cultivated nodal axillary buds treated with different abscisic acid (ABA) concentrations to reduce the time for recycling transplants cultivated in a SP basic nutritive medium. Nodal explants were stored for three months with ABA. Plants were obtained after nodal axillary buds were placed in SP medium without ABA. Results...
