Wind-induced drift of objects at sea: The leeway field method ArchiMer
Breivik, Oyvind; Allen, Arthur A.; Maisondieu, Christophe; Roth, Jens Christian.
A method for conducting leeway field experiments to establish the drift properties of small objects (0.1-25 m) is described. The objective is to define a standardized and unambiguous procedure for condensing the drift properties down to a set of coefficients that may be incorporated into existing stochastic trajectory forecast models for drifting objects of concern to search and rescue operations and other activities involving vessels lost at sea such as containers with hazardous material. An operational definition of the slip or wind and wave-induced motion of a drifting object relative to the ambient current is proposed. This definition taken together with a strict adherence to a 10 m wind speed allows us to refer unambiguously to the leeway of a...

A multi-model assessment of the impact of currents, waves and wind in modelling surface drifters and oil spill ArchiMer
De Dominicis, M.; Bruciaferri, D.; Gerin, R.; Pinardi, N.; Poulain, P. M.; Garreau, Pierre; Zodiatis, G.; Perivoliotis, L.; Fazioli, L.; Sorgente, R.; Manganiello, C..
Validation of oil spill forecasting systems suffers from a lack of data due to the scarcity of oil slick in-situ and satellite observations. Drifters (surface drifting buoys) are often considered as proxy for oil spill to overcome this problem. However, they can have different designs and consequently behave in a different way at sea, making it not straightforward to use them for oil spill model validation purposes and to account for surface currents, waves and wind when modelling them. Stemming from the need to validate the MEDESS4MS (Mediterranean Decision Support System for Marine Safety) multi-model oil spill prediction system, which allows access to several ocean, wave and meteorological operational model forecasts, an exercise at sea was carried out...

Monitoring of a quasi-stationary eddy in the Bay of Biscay by means of satellite, in situ and model results ArchiMer
Caballero, Ainhoa; Ferrer, Luis; Rubio, Anna; Charria, Guillaume; Taylor, Benjamin H.; Grima, Nicolas.
The presence of a quasi-stationary anticyclonic eddy within the southeastern Bay of Biscay (centred around 44°30′N-4°W) has been reported on various occasions in the bibliography. The analysis made in this study for the period 2003–2010, by using in situ and remote sensing measurements and model results shows that this mesoscale coherent structure is present almost every year from the end of winter-beginning of spring, to the beginning of fall. During this period it remains in an area limited to the east by the Landes Plateau, to the west by Le Danois Bank and Torrelavega canyon and to the northwest by the Jovellanos seamount. All the observations and analysis made in this contribution, suggest that this structure is generated between Capbreton and...

Suivi de flotteurs dans la zone Loire Vilaine ArchiMer
Kerdreux, Michel; Merceron, Michel; Le Hir, Pierre; Breton, Marguerite.
During one month in summer of 1985 the courses of ten drifters, dropped at the mouth of Loire and Vilaine Rivers, were monitored. Results show: -the marked influence of wind on the movement of this region's bodies of water, -the possibility of an intrusion of the Loire's waters in Vilaine Bay, -the very likely absence of any influence of the Loire's waters in the bottom waters' anoxia that occurred in Vilaine Bay during the summer of 1982.

Observations of the Ushant tidal front in September 2007 ArchiMer
Le Boyer, A.; Cambon, Gildas; Daniault, N.; Herbette, Steven; Le Cann, B.; Marie, Louis; Morin, P..
The Ushant tidal front is the dominant feature of the summer season hydrological structure of the Iroise Sea. It separates tidally mixed coastal waters from thermally stratified open Celtic Sea waters. This article reports on observations made in September 2007 during two short cruises that took place aboard R/V "Cotes de la Manche", and gives a general account of the physical structure of the front along one cross-frontal transect. The data set comprises data from a 4 month ADCP mooring, short CTD/fluorescence/nutrients transects, Lagrangian drifter trajectories, and HF radar surface current measurements. One finding is that the surface and bottom fronts, being affected by different dynamical influences, are not necessarily coincident in the vertical....

Surface circulation patterns above the coastal shelf between El Uno bay and Las Vacas spit, Gulf of Urabá, Colombian Caribbean Boletín de Investigaciones
Hernández Morales,Dannys Paola; Romaña Torres,Yorlenys; Jaramillo-Vélez,Alfredo; Pelegrí,Josep L.; Toro,Vladimir G..
ABSTRACT Good knowledge of the coastal circulation patterns is essential for a proper management of the coastline, especially in areas with a high anthropic pressure. In order to determine the main characteristics of the coastal currents in the Gulf of Urabá, the seasonal patterns of surface circulation were measured and analyzed during times of high and low rainfall along 6 km of coastline, between the Punta de Las Vacas and Punta Yarumal coastal spit systems, in the municipality of Turbo, Antioquia. These measurements were made with surface drifters, which were launched at different tide stages and tracked for time periods based on the semi-diurnal cycle. The in-situ measurements were analyzed alongside tide and wind data from a climatic station located...
