COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF A CHIMNEY SOLAR DRYER FOR CHILLI PEPPER CIGR Journal
Kumi, Francis.
The postharvest losses of agricultural produce in Ghana and other developing countries is high. Efforts to promote shelf-life extension of the fresh produce is centred around temperature and moisture management. Moisture control by drying is suited to a number of crops as it inhibits microbial decay and physiological processes of deterioration. However, there are often inefficient drying infrastructure in developing countries. Thus, the focus of this research was to structurally modify a chimney solar dryer originally designed by the Horticulture Innovation Laboratory of the University of California, Davis and include sea pebbles in the collector base to enhance its heating system and drying performance.  A computational fluid dynamics analysis using ANSYS...

Energy Consumption Requirements of Agricultural Dryers: An Overview CIGR Journal
Nwakuba, Nnaemeka Reginald; ASOEGWU, SABBAS N.; NWAIGWE, KEVIN N..
Artificial dryers promote high-quality dried food products in spite of their considerable energy consumption. This paper presents a review of energy consumption of agricultural dryers in order to ensure optimal dryer design and cost effective dryer operation which yield better quality dried products. From the review, dryer design, type, crop characteristics, and ambient environmental conditions are seen as major factors affecting dryer energy consumption. Energy consumption of different dryers with different products was reported using different empirical expressions and graphical approaches. Results obtained show that microwave dryers have about 70% energy savings when compared to other artificial dryers due to their low energy consumption at higher power...

The effect of thickness and power on the Hayward variety in drying process of kiwifruit using microwave CIGR Journal
Azadbakht, Mohsen; Tajari, Neda.
In this study, the rate of microwave drying method kiwifruit (Hayward variety) was studied. Samples in a completely randomized design with three different thicknesses of 4, 6 and 8 mm and weight of 15 g and three power of 200, 300 and 400W, with three replications, were dried in the microwave dryer. The samples were weighed every 30 seconds, and then moisture ratio was obtained. According to the results of experiments with different thicknesses Kiwifruit by increasing power, drying time decreased. The amount of effective moisture diffusion coefficient of kiwifruit slices with thickness of 4, 6 and 8 (mm), 3.25×10-9 to 6.49×10-9 (m2/s) and 3.65×10-9 to 1.83×10-8 (m2/s) and 1.29×10-8 to 3.25×10-8 (m2/s) was changed. The value of the effective activation...

DESIGN OF AN EXPERIMENTAL LABORATORY DRYER FOR AGRICULTURAL MATERIALS CIGR Journal
Ojo, ADEBIYI ADEBAYO.
ABSTRACT.A laboratory Model Dryer fully automated was fabricated for monitoring and controlling of drying process of agricultural products. Instrumentations were installed for monitoring rate of moisture remover using Aluminum Load Cell, and was interfaced to a personal computer at an interval of 30 seconds. A voltage/frequency AC motor speed controller for air flow rate, temperature controller K - type, model WRX – 31 and K-type thermocouples for monitoring the temperature at 8 different points on the sample tray which were later logged into the personal computer via the TC-08 Thermocouple Data Logger. Result of the evaluation of the drying   kinetics of Industrial Cassava mash shows that the system allowed the dryer to operate at a constant temperature...

Thermal Analysis of a New Model of a Tobacco Dryer CIGR Journal
de Carvalho, Ricardo Oliano; Machado, Miguel Borges; Milech, Fábio Brongar; Fuentes, Giovani Castro; da Luz, Carlos Alberto Silveira; Gadotti, Gizele Ingrid; da Luz, Maria Laura G. Silva.
The tobacco drying greenhouses, in general, are made without any coating that ensures thermal insulation and avoid heat losses, resulting in a large consumption of firewood during the drying of the tobacco. The study aims to develop an economically viable project to the producer, to avoid excessive heat loss through the walls and ceiling of a tobacco dryer, aimed at fuel economy, reduced drying time and reduces costs in process. For the current project, we considered changes of Brazilian theoretical mode, where we developed a thermal insulation system in a dryer, reaching satisfactory results, with a large reduction in energy losses and firewood consumption, resulting in a decrease in the costs of the proceedings in general. Thus, began for the development...
