Determinism, chaos, self-organization and entropy Anais da ABC (AABC)
PONTES,JOSÉ.
ABSTRACT We discuss two changes of paradigms that occurred in science along the XXth century: the end of the mechanist determinism, and the end of the apparent incompatibility between biology, where emergence of order is law, and physics, postulating a progressive loss of order in natural systems. We recognize today that three mechanisms play a major role in the building of order: the nonlinear nature of most evolution laws, along with distance to equilibrium, and with the new paradigm, that emerged in the last forty years, as we recognize that networks present collective order properties not found in the individual nodes. We also address the result presented by Blumenfeld (L.A. Blumenfeld, Problems of Biological Physics, Springer, Berlin, 1981) showing...

Automated Techniques for the Qualitative Analysis of Ecological Models: Continuous Models Ecology and Society
van Coller, Lynn; UBC; lvcoller@nbs.co.za.
The mathematics required for a detailed analysis of the behavior of a model can be formidable. In this paper, I demonstrate how various computer packages can aid qualitative analyses by implementing techniques from dynamical systems theory. Because computer software is used to obtain the results, the techniques can be used by nonmathematicians as well as mathematicians. In-depth analyses of complicated models that were previously very difficult to study can now be done. Because the paper is intended as an introduction to applying the techniques to ecological models, I have included an appendix describing some of the ideas and terminology. A second appendix shows how the techniques can be applied to a fairly simple predator-prey model and establishes the...

Mathematical Bioeconomic Modelling of the Interaction Between Aquaculture and Open Sea Fisheries AgEcon
Antonelli, Gervasio; Bischi, Gian Italo; Lamantia, Fabio.
We analyze the problem of an integrated management of fisheries by using fish farming as a tool for restocking fish populations depleted by overfishing pressure. We first use a simple heuristic dynamic model, taken from a classical example of mathematical bioeconomics, in order to prove that fish restocking may be an efficient tool for sustainable fishery management in situations where excessive fishing effort is going to cause irreversible stock collapse. Then we propose a two-compartments bieconomic mathematical model, with age structure and age specific harvesting and restocking, to mimic integrated interactions between aquaculture and open sea fisheries, where reared fish are used as substitutes for marine catches. The model proposed in this paper...
