Trait structure and redundancy determine sensitivity to disturbance in marine fish communities ArchiMer
Mclean, Matthew; Auber, Arnaud; Graham, Nicholas A J; Houk, Peter; Villéger, Sébastien; Violle, Cyrille; Thuiller, Wilfried; Wilson, Shaun K.; Mouillot, David.
‘Functional’ diversity is believed to influence ecosystem dynamics through links between organismal traits and ecosystem processes. Theory predicts that key traits and high trait redundancy – large species richness and abundance supporting the same traits – can buffer communities against environmental disturbances. While experiments and data from simple ecological systems lend support, large‐scale evidence from diverse, natural systems under major disturbance is lacking. Here, using long‐term data from both temperate (English Channel) and tropical (Seychelles Islands) fishes, we show that sensitivity to disturbance depends on communities’ initial trait structure and initial trait redundancy. In both ecosystems, we found that increasing dominance by...

ERIOCAULON L. from Brazil: An annotated checklist and taxonomic novelties Acta Botanica
Oliveira,Adriana Luiza Ribeiro de; Bove,Claudia Petean.
Eriocaulonis an aquatic and cosmopolitan genus with 478 species. It is characterized by diplostemonous flowers and free petals with a black gland at the apex. There are few taxonomists studying Eriocaulon from Brazil. The species of this genus remain barely delimited, with inconsistent descriptions, and nomenclatural types not assigned or located. The analysis of nomenclatural types, specimens in scientific collections, and protologues enabled the recognition of 53 species of Eriocaulonfrom Brazil. Thirteen new synonyms and the elevation of five varietes to species level are proposed. Comments on taxonomy, geographic distribution, habitat, life form, and conservation category are provided.

Species diversity, community structure and ecological traits of trees in an upper montane forest, southern Brazil Acta Botanica
Sühs,Rafael Barbizan; Hoeltgebaum,Marcia Patricia; Nuernberg-Silva,Anelise; Fiaschi,Pedro; Neckel-Oliveira,Selvino; Peroni,Nivaldo.
ABSTRACT Upper montane ecosystems in Brazil are little known, and their structural and functional aspects poorly understood. Our goals were to describe tree species diversity and community structure, and to characterize tree species in relation to their ecological traits, phytogeographic history and conservation status in an upper montane araucaria forest remnant. A total of 26 species belonging to 18 families were found in a 1-hectare permanent plot. The tree community mainly comprised trees with diameters of less than 20 cm and heights of between 6.5 and 9.5 m. Drimys angustifolia and Myrceugenia regnelliana had the highest importance values. Most species were shade tolerant while most individuals were pioneers. Most species and individuals presented...
