Impacts on Canadian Competitiveness of International Climate Change Mitigation Ecology and Society
Holling, Christopher; DRI-WEFA; chris.holling@dri-wefa.com; Somerville, Robin; Standard & Poors DRI; rsomervi@dri.mcgraw-hill.com.
This article summarizes and provides additional perspective on a study that contributes to the growing body of analyses of the costs of limiting greenhouse gas emissions. The study estimates the economic costs to Canada of six planning scenarios. Four of these scenarios involve the use of tradable emission permits and two involved a carbon tax. In each case, the mechanism's target is to stabilize greenhouse gas emissions at some percentage of 1990 levels (100% or 90%) by either 2010 or 2015. Policies that impose greater constraints on carbon dioxide emissions lead to higher economic costs in terms of foregone output. These costs, however, vary for the same objective, depending on the mechanism chosen and the economic assumptions made. In one typical...

Modeling the Regional Economic Impacts of the 2007/08 Drought: Results and Lessons AgEcon
Butcher, G.V; Ford, Stuart.
The 2007-08 drought affected a large area of New Zealand. This paper describes the analytical framework used to estimate the associated regional and national economic impacts. Results suggest that calculating drought economic impacts by applying standard farming industry multipliers to changes in farm gate output can greatly overstate both regional and national economic impacts. Calculating impacts using differences between forecast and actual farm production and expenditure by farm type is both feasible and produces far more reliable impact estimates.

Measuring the benefits of farm animal health AgEcon
Stott, Alistair W.; Brulisauer, Franz; Fraser, Fiona; Gunn, George J..
A methodology is described to establish the relative financial benefit of farm animal disease prevention (biosecurity). This methodology is demonstrated using the example of bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) incursion on beef suckler farms in Scotland. A random sample of 276 herds was taken and a proportion of young stock on each farm tested for previous exposure to BVDV. There was evidence that 0.4 of herds had been exposed over one year prior to sampling. All herds completed a questionnaire about their biosecurity practices. The influence of these practices on relative risk of BVDV was subjected to a Chi squared test and practices ranked accordingly. Most important risk factors were animal buying in strategy, farm size and a single farm boundary. The...

Economic Impact of the 32nd Annual Peter Anderson Arts and Crafts Festival, Ocean Springs, Mississippi AgEcon
Myles, Albert E.; Carter, Rachael.
Evaluating the Economic Impact of Festivals and Special Events: Lessons From the 32st Annual Peter Anderson Arts and Crafts Festival in Ocean Springs, Mississippi Background: Festivals are an integral part of the economies of most communities in Mississippi. The economic benefits of festivals can be assigned a dollar value, but no amount of money will accurately reflect the personal and social benefits of these events. Festivals can increase tourism in the area. These events not only bring outside revenue to the community, but they allow even the smallest towns to celebrate and capitalize on the unique aspects of their area. As budgets tighten in small communities economic and community development entities are constantly working to improve their...
