The disciplinary influence of physics, biology, and chemistry on economic modelling: Overview and implications for understanding agricultural change AgEcon

Economic research on structural change in agriculture has repeatedly induced controversies about basic theoretical concepts, such as rational behaviour and equilibrium, and their analytical and political implications. To contribute to the epistemological dimension of this debate, the article gives an overview of three paradigms to economic modelling whose proponents have been inspired by physics, biology, and chemistry. The key concepts of general equilibrium theory, evolutionary economics and the “social chemistry” of Jon Elster are presented and compared. The Carbon Challenge for Mixed Enterprise Farms AgEcon

As part of its climate change policy the Australian government has introduced a Mandatory Renewable Energy Target (MRET) scheme and is also attempting to introduce a Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS). Using as a case study a main agricultural region of Australia, this paper examines how farming systems in this region may be affected by the medium term policy settings of these two schemes. A bio-economic model of the region’s farming systems is developed and used to assess the schemes’ impacts on the nature and profitability of the farming systems. GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSION TRADING IN EUROPEAN AGRICULTURE: A COMPARISON OF DIFFERENT POLICY IMPLEMENTATION OPTIONS IN YEAR 2020 AgEcon

In this paper the agricultural sector model CAPRI is expanded to cover non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural sources in Europe and policy instruments for their reduction. A stylised spatial trade model for emission permits is methodologically described and applied to the assessment of three potential policy alternatives for enforcing emission reductions from European agriculture: the EU ‘effort sharing agreement’, an EU-wide emission trading scheme between regions inside each Member State and, finally, an EUwide emission trading scheme between all European regions. Future of European agriculture after the Health Check AgEcon

This paper identifies major future trends and driving factors and perspectives and challenges resulting from them for European agriculture and food sectors until the year 2020. The focus of the paper is an analysis of key driving forces and the provision of a well developed reference scenario under the assumption of continued CAP reform and taking into account the framework discussions in the Doha Development Round. To assess the impact of policies the paper also examines a liberalisation (no support) and regionalization (maximum support) scenario. Efficiency Policies for Salinity Management: Preliminary Research from a Spatial and Dynamic Metamodel AgEcon

Dryland salinity, as an externality, has an impact on various public assets, including roads, biodiversity and public water supplies. This has been seen as an important justification for government to take action and internalise the pollution. Economic policy instruments have been identified as a potential solution to the problem, as they may achieve environmental goals at least cost to society. This paper presents a spatial and dynamic model which aims to compare economic instruments for land use change to abate the off-site impacts of salinity on public assets. Preliminary research is presented, along with a discussion of the model’s structure.

Low Emission Farming Systems: A whole-farm analysis of the potential impacts of greenhouse policy AgEcon

The Australian government is introducing a Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme in 2010, as part of its climate change policy. After 2015 agriculture may be covered by this scheme. This paper examines how different broadacre farming systems may be affected by the policy settings of this scheme. Using the bio-economic farming systems model MIDAS (Model of an Integrated Dryland Agricultural System) the impacts of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme on the profitability of different broadacre farming systems in the southwest of Australia are investigated. Results show a range of profit and enterprise impacts across the various farm types.
