Role of renin-angiotensin system in development of heart failure induced by myocardial infarction in rats Anais da ABC (AABC)
Trindade,Daniel C.; Trindade,Raquel C.; Marassi,Michelle P.; Martins,Ornélia P.P.R.; Costa-e-Sousa,Ricardo H.; Mattos,Elisabete C.; Marinho-Jr.,Alcides; Reis,Luís C.; Olivares,Emerson L..
We investigated the morphologic and functional changes of infarcted rat hearts under a paradigm of angiotensinconverting enzyme inhibition. Myocardial infarction was induced by left coronary artery ligation and a control group (SHAM) underwent sham-operation. Infarcted rats received normal drinking water with (CAP group) or without (INF group) captopril. Functional assessment was performed by electro (ECG) and echocardiogram (ECHO) just before and 21 days after surgery. The ECG of INF and CAP showed similar values and resembled healed infarct after surgery. The most outstanding differences between INF and CAP were the prevention of the increase of P-wave and attenuation both in rightward deviation of the QRS axis and Q-wave amplitude in CAP compared with...

Time course of echocardiographic and electrocardiographic parameters in myocardial infarct in rats Anais da ABC (AABC)
Miranda,Amarildo; Costa-e-Sousa,Ricardo H.; Werneck-de-Castro,João P.S.; Mattos,Elisabete C.; Olivares,Emerson L.; Ribeiro,Vanessa P.; Silva,Márcia G.; Goldenberg,Regina C.S.; Campos-de-Carvalho,Antônio C..
In animal models the evaluation of myocardial infarct size in vivo and its relation to the actual lesion found post mortem is still a challenge. The purpose of the current study was to address if the conventional electrocardiogram (ECG) and/or echocardiogram (ECHO) could be used to adequately predict the size of the infarct in rats. Wistar rats were infarcted by left coronary ligation and then ECG, ECHO and histopathology were performed at 1, 7 and 28 days after surgery. Correlation between infarct size by histology and Q wave amplitude in lead L1 was only found when ECGs were performed one day post-surgery. Left ventricular diastolic and systolic dimensions correlated with infarct size by ECHO on day 7 post-infarction. On days 7 and 28 post-infarction,...

Retrospective study of allometric relationship between heart rate, electrocardiographic parameters and bodyweight in dogs Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Aleixo,A.S.C.; Alfonso,A.; Fillippi,M.G.; Chiacchio,S.B.; Lourenço,M.L.G..
ABSTRACT The allometric relationship between bodyweight (BW) and heart rate (HR) has been described as inversely proportional in domestic species, but that has been refuted. The relationship between HR and electrocardiographic variables is described in literature. However, studies about the variation and influence of factors on the hemodynamic and electrocardiographic parameters in dogs are not abundant. As the metabolic rate is defined as the production and dissipation of heat by the body surface area (BSA) in m², it is essential to define that relationship. A retrospective study was conducted to analyze the correlation between HR, ECG parameters and BW in dogs. One thousand electrocardiographic tracings were analyzed in addition to the ECG parameters and...

Electrocardiographic evaluation of two anesthetic combinations in dogs Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Tárraga,K.M.; Spinosa,H.S.; Camacho,A.A..
This study aimed to investigate electrocardiographic changes in dogs aged 5 years or more submitted to two anesthetic combinations: atropine, levomeprazine, thiopental and halothane (ALTH), and atropine, tiletamine and zolazepam (ATZ). Forty dogs (24 males/16 females) weighing 5-24kg, were used. Dogs had no cardiac problems and were submitted to tartarectomy. All animals were submitted to two electrocardiograms (ECG), one before anesthesia and other immediately before surgery. The dogs were divided into two groups: group 1 received ALTH and group 2 received ATZ. Alterations in the ST segment, T wave, cardiac rhythm and a significant reduction of vagal tonus index were observed in both groups, but in group 2 a significant reduction of the PR and QT...

Differentiating origins of outflow tract ventricular arrhythmias: a comparison of three different electrocardiographic algorithms BJMBR
Jiao,Z.Y.; Li,Y.B.; Mao,J.; Liu,X.Y.; Yang,X.C.; Tan,C.; Chu,J.M.; Liu,X.P..
Our objective is to evaluate the accuracy of three algorithms in differentiating the origins of outflow tract ventricular arrhythmias (OTVAs). This study involved 110 consecutive patients with OTVAs for whom a standard 12-lead surface electrocardiogram (ECG) showed typical left bundle branch block morphology with an inferior axis. All the ECG tracings were retrospectively analyzed using the following three recently published ECG algorithms: 1) the transitional zone (TZ) index, 2) the V2 transition ratio, and 3) V2 R wave duration and R/S wave amplitude indices. Considering all patients, the V2 transition ratio had the highest sensitivity (92.3%), while the R wave duration and R/S wave amplitude indices in V2 had the highest specificity (93.9%). The latter...

Chronic converting enzyme inhibition normalizes QT interval in aging rats BJMBR
Silva,V.J. Dias da; Ferreira Neto,E.; Salgado,H.C.; Fazan Júnior,R..
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of converting enzyme inhibition by captopril on ECG parameters in aged rats. Four-month-old male rats received captopril dissolved in tap water (0.5 mg/l) or tap water for 2 or 20 months. At the end of treatment, under anesthesia, RR and PR interval, P wave and QRS duration, QT and corrected QT interval were measured in all animals. On the following day, chronic ECG (lead II) recordings were performed to quantify supraventricular (SVPB) or ventricular premature beats (VPB). After sacrifice, the hearts were removed and weighed. RR interval was similar in young and untreated aged rats, but significantly larger in aged rats treated with captopril. P wave and QRS length did not differ among groups. PR...

Human umbilical cord blood cells in infarcted rats BJMBR
Pinho-Ribeiro,V.; Maia,A.C.V.; Werneck-de-Castro,J.P S.; Oliveira,P.F.; Goldenberg,R.C.S.; Campos de Carvalho,A.C..
Therapy with bone marrow-derived cells has been used in ischemic patients with reported success. The aim of this study was to determine the therapeutic efficacy of fresh and frozen human umbilical cord blood cells (hUCB) in Wistar rats submitted to permanent occlusion of the left coronary artery. Three hours after myocardial infarction, 2 x 10(7) hUCB cells or vehicle were administered by intramyocardial injection. The animals were divided into five groups: control (N = 10), sham operated (N = 10), infarcted that received vehicle (N = 9), infarcted treated with cryopreserved hUCB (N = 7), and infarcted treated with fresh hUCB (N = 5). Cardiac function was evaluated by electrocardiogram (ECG) and echocardiogram (ECHO) before cell therapy, and by ECG, ECHO,...

A routine electrocardiogram cannot be used to determine the size of myocardial infarction in the rat BJMBR
Bonilha,A.M.M.; Saraiva,R.M.; Kanashiro,R.M.; Portes,L.A.; Antonio,E.L.; Tucci,P.J.F..
Nine lead electrocardiograms of non-infarcted (N = 61) and infarcted (N = 71) female Wistar rats (200-250 g) were analyzed in order to distinguish left ventricle myocardial infarction (MI) larger than 40% (LMI) from MI smaller than 40% (SMI). MI larger than 40% clearly caused a deviation of ÂQRS and ÂT from normal values of 270-360 degrees to 90-270 degrees. Infarcted rats showed Q wave in D1 larger than 1 mm with 94% sensitivity and 100% specificity. The sum of QRS positivity in V1, V2 and V6 lower than 10 mm identified MI with 82% sensitivity and 100% specificity. The data showed that MI can be easily and reliably diagnosed by electrocardiogram in the rat. However, contradicting what is frequently believed, when specificity and sensitivity were analyzed...

Electrocardiographic studies of the three-toed sloth, Bradypus variegatus BJMBR
Silva,E.M.; Duarte,D.P.F.; da Costa,C.P..
Electrocardiograms (ECG) obtained with standard limb leads and augmented unipolar limb leads were recorded from 17 unanesthetized adult sloths. The animals were held in their habitual position in an experimental chair. We determined heart rate and rhythm from the R-R intervals, the amplitude and duration of each wave, and the duration of the segments and intervals of the ECG. The mean electrical axes of P and T waves and QRS complex were calculated on the basis of the amplitude of these waves in leads I, II, III, aV R, aV L, and aV F. The P wave appeared positive in most tracings with low amplitude in lead II, the QRS complex was generally negative in leads aV R, III and aV F, and no arrhythmias were observed. With a mean ± SD heart rate for all recordings...

Coelho,Clarisse Simões; Silva,Gabriella Agra de Omena e; Oliveira Junior,Luiz Antonio Trindade; Moraes,Vanessa Sartor; Conti,Laura Monteiro de Castro; Champion,Tatiana.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to evaluate the electrocardiographic parameters in Mangalarga Marchador horses submitted to marcha exercise. Twenty-four Mangalarga Marchador horses, thirteen females and eleven males, 6.4±2.7 years old with a mean weight of 428.3±24.7kg, were used. Electrocardiograms were recorded in two different moments: rest and immediately after exercise (40 minutes of aerobic exercise, marcha gait). The electrocardiographic variables analyzed were cardiac rhythm, heart rate (HR), duration of P wave, QRS complex, PR and QT intervals, amplitudes of P, R and T waves, and analysis of QT corrected (QTc) according to Bazett's formula (QT/√RR). Variables were analyzed for normality with Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and paired t-test,...
