Fast qualitative method based on electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) to date Gmelina arborea and Araucaria angustifolia wood Agrociencia
Bolzón-de Muñiz,G. Inés; Lomelí-Ramírez,M. Guadalupe; Mangrich,Antonio S.; Carbajal- Arizaga,G. Guadalupe.
In Brazil, Gmelina arborea is a common tree to produce char and the content of carbon is an important factor to correlate with the energy content or carbon sequestration capability, whereas Araucaria angustifolia occupies 6 % of its original territory and Brazilian laws protect old native specimens, since the commercial use of wood is restricted for young cultivated specimens. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy is used for detection and quantification of organic free radicals (OFR) and, in this study, it was utilized for exploring OFR content along the rings of one log from G. arborea and A. angustifolia trees, both randomly chosen. The amount of OFR correlated with the carbon content in G. arborea and the age of rings in G. arborea and A....

Antioxidant Mechanisms of Polyphenolic Caffeic Acid Oligomers, Constituents of Salvia officinalis Biol. Res.
BORS,WOLF; CHRISTA,MICHEL; STETTMAIER,KURT; YINRONG,LU; L. YEAP,FOO.
Caffeic acid, rosmarinic acid and oligomers of caffeic acid with multiple catechol groups are all constituents of Salvia officinalis. Their antioxidant potential was investigated with regard to their radical scavenging activity and the stability and structure of the intermediate radicals. Pulse-radiolytic studies revealed very high rate constants with hydroxyl radicals. Evidence from kinetic modeling calculations suggested an unusual complex behavior due to the presence of both O4- and O3-semiquinones and formation and decay of a hydroxyl radical adduct at the vinyl side chain. The radical structures observed by EPR spectroscopy after autoxidation in slightly alkaline solutions were only partially identified due to their instability and generally...

Electron paramagnetic resonance study of lipid and protein membrane components of erythrocytes oxidized with hydrogen peroxide BJMBR
Mendanha,S.A.; Anjos,J.L.V.; Silva,A.H.M.; Alonso,A..
Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy of spin labels was used to monitor membrane dynamic changes in erythrocytes subjected to oxidative stress with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The lipid spin label, 5-doxyl stearic acid, responded to dramatic reductions in membrane fluidity, which was correlated with increases in the protein content of the membrane. Membrane rigidity, associated with the binding of hemoglobin (Hb) to the erythrocyte membrane, was also indicated by a spin-labeled maleimide, 5-MSL, covalently bound to the sulfhydryl groups of membrane proteins. At 2% hematocrit, these alterations in membrane occurred at very low concentrations of H2O2 (50 µM) after only 5 min of incubation at 37°C in azide phosphate buffer, pH 7.4. Lipid...

Accuracy of dose planning for prostate radiotherapy in the presence of metallic implants evaluated by electron spin resonance dosimetry BJMBR
Alves,G.G.; Kinoshita,A.; Oliveira,H.F. de; Guimarães,F.S.; Amaral,L.L.; Baffa,O..
Radiotherapy is one of the main approaches to cure prostate cancer, and its success depends on the accuracy of dose planning. A complicating factor is the presence of a metallic prosthesis in the femur and pelvis, which is becoming more common in elderly populations. The goal of this work was to perform dose measurements to check the accuracy of radiotherapy treatment planning under these complicated conditions. To accomplish this, a scale phantom of an adult pelvic region was used with alanine dosimeters inserted in the prostate region. This phantom was irradiated according to the planned treatment under the following three conditions: with two metallic prostheses in the region of the femur head, with only one prosthesis, and without any prostheses. The...
