ABSTRACT Cerebral ischemia commonly occurs when the blood flow to the entire brain or some part of the brain is disrupted. Global cerebral ischemia attenuates the nucleus tractus solitaries (NTS) EEG rhythm, increases the free radicals production and brain inflammation. Ellagic acid (EA) has antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects against neural damages. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of ellagic acid on EEG power in the global cerebral ischemia.Rats were divided into four groups: SO (sham) received normal saline, EA+SO, I/R (normal saline + ischemia/reperfusion), and EA + I/R. EA (100 mg/kg, dissolved in normal saline) or normal saline was administered orally (gavage) for 10 days. Animal underwent to 20 minutes of ischemia followed by... |

Frequent nut intake is associated with protective effects against cardiovascular diseases. In addition to the generally high contents of unsaturated fatty acids, polyphenol compounds seem to be also implicated in health promoting effects of nuts due to their antioxidant properties. In this way, eleven different kinds of nuts, including pinhao seeds (Araucaria angustifolia) and Brazil nuts (Bertholletia excelsa), typical of Brazil, were analyzed for the content of phenol compounds, including the potent anti-mutagenic and anti-cancer ellagic acid, and antioxidant capacity of methanolic extracts. The antioxidant capacity varied a hundred times among the different nuts, from 1.2 to 120 mg of Trolox equivalents.100 g-1 (FW). Total ellagic acid was determined... |

Abstract Non-conventional yeasts represent an alternative for microorganisms that are capable to produce the enzyme Tannase (EC 3.1.1.20), which has many applications is the food and pharmaceutical industry as it stands out for its ability to produce ellagic acid out of the enzymatic hydrolysis of ellagitannins. Ellagic acid has been studied in the medical area for its action against various diseases, as is the case of cancer or heart problems. The investigation was conducted to evaluate seven non-conventional yeasts - Debaryomyces hansenii PYC ISA 1510, Debaryomyces hansenii PYC 2968, Candida parapsilosis, Candida utilis, Pichia pastoris, Pichia kluyveri, Issatchenkia terricola - as producers of the enzyme tannase. This was done in mediums of fermentation... |
