Última Recurrent and density-dependent patterns in long-term fluctuations of Atlantic bluefin tuna trap catches ArchiMer Royer, Francois; Fromentin, Jean-marc. We present a methodology for the non-linear analysis of long-term ecological time series. Using a time-delay embedding procedure, we investigated the complexity of 1-dimensional signals and compared their structure to their stochastic counterparts. Recurrence-based statistics and surrogate testing were used for this purpose. The method was first tested on elementary models for illustrative purposes and its potentialities and limits reviewed. We then investigated the time structure of 6 Mediterranean bluefin tuna trap catches known to display long-term fluctuations. The key tasks in the design of a choice modelling (CM) experiment are to define the scope, scale and frame of the tradeoffs presented to respondents. This study explores the scale and scope of choice tasks and then develops definitions of these terms. The scope of a good in a stated preference experiment refers to the dimensions used to define the good as well as the tradeoffs involved. The scale refers to the quantities involved. The framing refers to the context in which the choices are made. The discussion helps identify issues when setting the contingent market for a choice experiment. This report presents results of research designed to investigate variations in willingness to pay (WTP) estimates across different scales and scopes of environmental investments. The goal is to help catchment management authorities better prioritise their natural resource management actions at both catchment and farm levels. Five split samples were used to test for scale and scope effects. A choice-modelling (CM) analysis was used to elicit household WTP for improvements in environmental quality attributes in the Namoi catchment. The approach was developed so that value estimates could be more accurately transferred between different action scopes. The present work describes an equipment constructed using inexpensive material for embedding the plant material in the paraffin under the vacuum, using an oven and a vacuum pump. The equipment was tested using the samples of Rodriguezia venusta (Orchidaceae) buds embedded in paraffin, where half of the samples were submitted to the vacuum by the equipment during the embedding. The material was sectioned with a rotary microtome, obtaining full series of quality sections. The control was hard to section with the microtome, obtaining damaged sections due the air bubbles, making the ribbon formation difficult. These results proved the effectiveness of the equipment, making it a practical, inexpensive and more portable solution for newly established laboratories.
