U.S. CIGARETTE SMOKING AND HEALTH WARNINGS: NEW EVIDENCE FROM POST WORLD WAR II DATA AgEcon
Blaine, Thomas W.; Reed, Michael R..
A framework was developed in order to specify a model for annual U.S. per capita consumption of cigarettes. Three separate time related variables were utilized to measure the effects of health related information regarding smoking. The empirical results from the post World War II data set reveal that while prices and income are important determinants of cigarette consumption, the estimates for both were in the inelastic range. The age distribution of the adult population is also an important variable. While the development of the filter tip has been successful in stimulating smoking, the low tar and nicotine innovation has not had a statistically significant effect. Health information has repeatedly produced substantial short and long run effects....

New Economic Geography in Germany: Testing the Helpman-Hanson Model AgEcon
Brakman, Steven; Garretsen, Harry; Schramm, Marc.
In this paper we find evidence that the new economic geography approach is able to describe and explain the spatial characteristics of an economy, in our case the German economy. Using German district data we estimate the structural parameters of a new economic geography model as developed by Helpman (1998) and Hanson (1998) and we find confirmation for a spatial wage structure. The advantage of the Helpman- Hanson model is that it incorporates the fact that agglomeration of economic activity increases the prices of local (non-tradable) services, like housing. This model thereby provides an intuitively appealing spreading force that allows for less extreme agglomeration patterns than predicted by the bulk of new economic geography models. Based on...

High-Grading in a Quota-Regulated Fishery, with Empirical Evidence from the Icelandic Cod Fishery AgEcon
Kristofersson, Dadi; Rickertsen, Kyrre.
Fishers in quota-regulated fisheries find it to their advantage to discard less valuable fish at sea to increase the value of their catch. A theoretical model describing the high-grading behavior of fishers is presented, and an empirical model is derived as well as a testing strategy to test for high-grading and to estimate the discarded amount of each grade. The model is applied to data for the Icelandic quota regulated cod fishery during the period September 1998 to June 2001. The results indicate that highgrading occurs in the Icelandic cod fishery for both long-line and net vessels. However, the discard rates are small, and the results clearly suggest that the ban on discards in Iceland has effectively dealt with high-grading. The estimated discard...

Analysis of the Contribution of Total Factor Productivity to Agricultural Yield in Anhui Province AgEcon
Xia, Yan-lei.
By analyzing data concerning agricultural development from 1981 to 2010 in Anhui Province, the total factor productivity and growth rate of agriculture from 1981 to 2010 are estimated empirically. By dividing years from 1981 to 2010 into several subintervals, this paper evaluates and analyzes initial stage of reform and opening up, soft landing stage, the stage of financial crisis, the stage of subprime mortgage crisis and the impact of ail factors on total factor growth rate of agriculture. Then it analyzes the contribution of growth of total factor productivity to total geld of agricultural economy. The research finds that the growth of total factor productivity in Anhui Province is significant to agricultural development.

The Final Frontier? Border Effects and German Regional Wages AgEcon
Brakman, Steven; Garretsen, Harry; Schramm, Marc.
Recent studies of border effects have focused on the intra-country and inter-country comparison of trade flows. It is found that borders have a negative impact on the size of cross-border trade. In order to estimate border effects on a regional level one needs not only data on inter-country but also on intra-country trade. For many countries (regional) data on intra-country trade are simply lacking, which makes an analysis of border effects and border regions cumbersome. In this paper we take a different approach to measure the impact of borders. We estimate a market potential function for German regional wages and by analysing whether German border regions can be distinguished from the other regions in terms of their wages. We use a market potential...
