Climate and Tickborne Encephalitis Ecology and Society
Lindgren, Elisabet; Stockholm University; elisa@system.ecology.su.se.
Climatic changes are projected to alter the abundance, dynamics, and geographical distribution of many vector-borne diseases in human populations. Tick-borne diseases such as Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) are a growing concern in northern Europe and the United States. The impact of a future climate change on the transmission of tick-borne diseases is not known. To make such assumptions, more empirical data are needed on the relations between short-term fluctuations in contemporary weather and disease incidence. This paper analyzes relations between daily minimum and maximum temperatures, monthly precipitation, and TBE incidence during a 36-yr period in Stockholm County, a high-endemic region for TBE in Sweden. Multiple regression analyses...

EQUINE '98, PART III: MANAGEMENT AND HEALTH OF HORSES, 1998 AgEcon
Garber, Lindsey.
The National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) is sponsored by the USDA:APHIS:Veterinary Services (VS). The NAHMS Equine '98 Study was designed to provide information about the nation's equine population. Twenty-eight states were included in the study. The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) collaborated with VS to select a statistically-valid sample such that inferences could be made to all equids and operations with equids in the 28 states. For the purposes of the study, equids included domestic horses, miniature horses, ponies, donkeys/burros, and mules. For Part III of the study, data were collected by Federal and State Veterinary Medical Officers and Animal Health Technicians between March 16, 1998, to April 10, 1998, from...

Canine distemper diagnosis by RT-PCR in dog samples from São Paulo State submitted to rabies laboratory diagnosis MV&Z
Macedo, Carla Isabel; Peixoto, Zélia Maria Pinheiro; Castilho, Juliana Galera; Oliveira, Rafael de Novaes; Rodrigues, Adriana Cândido; Achkar, Samira Maria.
Canine distemper (CD) is one of the most important infectious diseases in domestic dogs. In Brazil, CD is still the principal cause of mortality of dogs in some urban populations. Although different viral gene sequences have been identified for detecting the canine distemper virus (CDV), the N gene appears to be a better target for the amplification of specific fragments from all CDV strains. Using RT-PCR targeted to the CDV N gene, during the year 2014 we analyzed 190 central nervous system (CNS) samples of dogs from the state of São Paulo, Brazil, with symptoms suggestive of encephalitis and sent them to the Pasteur Institute for the diagnosis of rabies. Positivity for CD was over 50%, indicating that the disease remains an important cause of canine...

Neurological disorder in cattle associated with bovine herpesvirus 4 Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Costa,E.A.; Vasconcelos,A.C.; Bomfim,M.R.Q.; Amorim,H.B.; Lima,G.B.L.; Coelho,F.M.; Resende,M..
A nested PCR assay was used to diagnose bovine encephalitis through herpesviruses including bovine herpesvirus 5 (BHV-5), bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1), Aujeszky's disease virus (SHV-1), and ovine herpesvirus 2 (OHV-2) in 14 fragments of central nervous system (CNS) from cattle that died with neurological signs. In addition, as some samples of bovine herpesvirus type 4 (BHV-4) have been isolated from neural tissue, it was also tested by nested PCR. The cases of encephalitis occurred in isolation at different times of the year and did not present any seasonality. The duration of the clinical course ranged between 1 to 15 days, and in 64.3% of the cases it manifested between 1 to 2 days. The most frequently observed neurological signs were ataxia, recumbency,...

Molecular characterization of neuropathogenic Equine Herpesvirus 1 Brazilian isolates Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Costa,E.A.; Rosa,R.; Oliveira,T.S.; Assis,A.C.; Paixão,T.A.; Santos,R.L..

Diagnosis and quantitative detection of HSV DNA in samples from patients with suspected herpes simplex encephalitis BJID
Ziyaeyan,Mazyar; Alborzi,Abdolvahab; Haghighi,Afshin Borhani; Jamalidoust,Marziyeh; Moeini,Mahsa; Pourabbas,Bahman.
Diagnosis of herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) is based on the detection of herpes simplex virus (HSV) DNA in patients' CSF samples. HSV DNA quantitation has the potential for estimating the effects of antiviral therapy. The aim of this study was to diagnose HSV DNA in HSE suspected patients and the quantitative analysis of its genome using real-time PCR to assess the value of the viral load in the course of antiviral treatment. The CSF samples were collected from 236 consecutive HSE suspected patients from November 2004 to May 2008. Upon DNA extraction, the samples were analyzed by Real-Time PCR assay. A set of primers amplified a common sequence of HSV glycoprotein B gene. The copy numbers of unknown samples were expressed via a standard curve drawn with...
