Leaf anatomy of Qualea parviflora (Vochysiaceae) in three phytophysiognomies of the Mato Grosso State, Brazil Acta Amazonica

ABSTRACT Leaves have a variety of morphological and anatomical characters mainly influenced by climatic, edaphic and biotic factors. The aim of this study was to describe the anatomical leaf traits of Qualea parviflora from three phytophysiognomies. The studied phytophysiognomies were Amazon Savannah on rocky outcrops (ASR), Transition Rupestrian Cerrado (TRC), and Cerradão (CDA). Freehand sections of the leaf blade were made and stained with 0.5% astra blue and with basic fuchsin. From the adaxial and abaxial leaf surface, freehand paradermal sections were made for epidermis analysis. The Jeffrey´s method, with modifications, was used in the epidermis dissociation process. Effects of experimental lightgaps and topography on enrichment plantings in a central Amazonian secondary forest Acta Amazonica

ABSTRACT Enrichment plantings into secondary forest are an important option in restoring species diversity and ecosystem services. However, little attention has been given to environmental requirements for species performance. This study evaluated the effects of lightgaps and topographic position on the growth and survival of four native tree species (Pouteria caimito, Garcinia macrophylla, Dipteryx odorata and Cynometra bauhiniaefolia) planted into a 26-year old secondary forest originating from abandoned pastures in the central Amazon Basin. Influence of environmental integrity on the reproductive biology of Astyanax altiparanae Garutti & Britski, 2000 in the Ivinhema river basin Biological Sciences

In this study, it was examined the reproductive biology of Astyanax. altiparanae, in streams with different levels of environmental disturbance in the Ivinhema river basin (Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil). Samplings were conducted between July 2001 and November 2011, at 101 sites, using sieves, seining nets, gill nets and electrofishing. Streams were classified into three levels of environmental integrity. We analyzed 735 specimens, 410 females and 325 males. Females predominated in impacted streams and both sexes presented nearly the same pattern of length distribution in the three levels of environmental integrity.  Savannas of the Amazon Region of Mato Grosso State have an unique  ecological identity due to the complexity of the Cerrado-Amazon transition region, their geographical isolation and the physical-chemical properties of the soil. This study aimed to characterize the leaf anatomy of Xylopia aromatica, and to identify potential adaptive traits to the xeric environment. We collected adult leaves from X. aromatica from a Amazonian savannah located in the Nova Canãa do Norte city, Mato Grosso. The leaves were fixed and stored in 70% ethanol. Abstract The pichi (Zaedyus pichiy; Cingulata: Chlamyphoridae) is an armadillo whose ectoparasite fauna is composed of ticks and fleas. Fleas were collected from 218 pichis in southern Mendoza, Argentina, in summer and winter of 2015 and 2016. Prevalences were analyzed and differences in the intensities of the total number of fleas related to host (age, sex, weight, size and physical condition) and environment-related (seasonality and year) factors evaluated. Phthiropsylla agenoris was the only species found. Intensities of fleas were higher in 2015, in juveniles, and in males. ABSTRACT Latex from Jatropha curcas L. exhibits biotechnological potential for the development of biodiesel and drugs. Little is known about the collection methods and latex productivity of this species. In order to garner information on the use of J. curcas latex, factors that influence production by this species were assessed. As a result, no significant difference was found between the volume of latex collected in the stem and the branches. With respect to environmental characteristics, climatic conditions, such as low temperatures and rainfall, affected production. Annual dynamics of abundance, biomass and survival of meroplankton in Sevastopol Bay, Black Sea IBSS Repository

The first comprehensive data on species composition, abundance, biomass and survival (living/dead ratio) of meroplankton in Sevastopol Bay (Black Sea) are presented. Marked differences were observed between the years 1998 and 1999, and these could be attributed to the hydrology and the eutrophication status of the different parts of the Bay. Shannon index and selected community parameters (number of species, biomass, numbers of individuals) indicated that South Bay was the worst affected part of the Bay with the greatest eutrophication impact on the meroplankton. Spawning location and timing are critical for understanding fish larval survival. The impact of a changing environment on spawning patterns is, however, poorly understood. A novel approach is to consider the impact of the environment on individual life histories and subsequent spawnings. In the present work, we extend the Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory to investigate how environment variability impacts the spawning timing and duration of a multiple-batch spawning species. Variation in structure and biomass of the benthic communities at three contrasting sites in the tropical Northeast Atlantic ArchiMer

Three major size classes of the benthic metazoan communities (megafauna, macrofauna and meiofauna) were investigated simultaneously at 3 sites in the tropical Northeast Atlantic. The sites varied in their level of surface primary productivity (eutrophic, mesotrophic and oligotrophic). Results for 3 cruises in 3 seasons (Eumeli 2, winter 1991; Eumeli 3, autumn 1991; Eumeli 4, spring 1992) are given for each size class in terms of taxonomic composition, density and biomass. Relationship between metal levels in the vent mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus and local microhabitat chemical characteristics of Eiffel Tower (Lucky Strike) ArchiMer

The turbulent mixing of hydrothermal hot fluid with cold seawater creates large chemical gradients at a small spatial scale that may induce variable physiological and biochemical adaptations within the vent fauna. The adaptation to such a variable environment by the vent mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus relies on a dual symbiosis hosted in the gills, and digestion of particulate organic matter. High-resolution dynamics of a deep-sea Hydrothermal mussel assemblage monitored by the EMSO-Açores MoMAR observatory ArchiMer

Although the spatial distribution of hydrothermal vent assemblages in relation to environmental conditions has been assessed in several studies, there is little documented data on the temporal variation of the fauna and corresponding abiotic factors in a vent community. Here, we present one of the longest integrated (faunal and environmental data) time series ever obtained in a hydrothermal ecosystem. Reduction du nitrate dans les sediments marins. Comparaison des activites mesurees in vitro et in situ ArchiMer

In vitro nitrate reduction in hydrocarbon-polluted marine sediments has been studied by flow-through system. By analysing the rate of nitrate comsumption as a function of nitrate concentration the authors determined the Michaelis-Menten kinetics parameters. (km = 330 mu M; vax = 2.0 mu M/g super(-1)/h super(-1). The authors found a value of 60 mu M/m super(-2)/h super(-1) for the rate of in vitro nitrate consumption derived from the above kinetic parameters and from the nitrate concentration in the sediment. In parallel a value of 67.4 mu M/m super(-2)/h super(-1) was found for the rate of nitrate consumption under in situ conditions. The great similarity between both results would favor the in vitro technique as a valid and more convenient one.

Are spatial variations in the diets of hydrothermal fauna linked to local environmental conditions? ArchiMer

Trophic relationships in Bathymodiolus azoricus mussel bed communities on the Tour Eiffel hydrothermal edifice (Lucky Strike) were assessed using delta C-13 and delta N-15 signatures from 14 hydrothermal species. The nutritional basis of B. azoricus was also investigated with delta S-34. Faunal samples and environmental data (temperature, pH, total dissolved sulfide, iron and copper concentrations) were collected from 12 different locations on the edifice. Investigating the biological mechanisms linking environmental variability to fish production systems requires the disentangling of the interactions between habitat, environmental adaptation and fitness.
