ABSTRACT To determine the coral reefmorpho-functional structure of San Andrés, regarding functional benthic diversity and fish (Lutjanidae), we evaluated the condition of the coral structure on the leeward side of the island, which is an area impacted by tourism, through diving and fishing. Three sampling sites were evaluated during two years recording the distribution of benthic organisms, environmental variables and Snappers density (Lutjanidae). A low density of Lutjanusjocu and Ocyurus chrysurus was found, with a high density ofjuveniles of L. apodus and L. mahogoni, which showed a preference for reefs with submassive and brain corals. Algae especially Macroalgae and octocorals were those with the greatest coverage in the reefs, followed by inert... |

The Upper Paraguay River Basin is located in the center of South America and harbors one of the largest wetland in the world, known as Pantanal. This floodplain is surrounded by uplands, which presently have most of their area converted into pastures or monocultures, besides being poorly known scientifically. Also, most of these upland areas are considered conservation priorities. Here we present a list of anuran species from a savanna-like area (municipality of Camapuã, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil) inserted in the uplands surrounding the Pantanal floodplain, in the Upper Taquari River sub-basin, and evaluate the effectiveness of the sampling effort. Data were obtained through active searches in 22 plots in aquatic habitats, during the rainy season... |

China is undergoing economic growth and expansion to a free market economy at a scale and pace that are unprecedented in human history. This is placing great pressure on the country’s environment and cultural diversity. This paper examines a number of case histories in China, focusing on the culturally varied and ecologically diverse southwest region of the country. We show how developments in recent Chinese history have devalued and in some cases eliminated indigenous knowledge and practices in the quest to strengthen the centralized state. Despite these changes, more than 30 ethnic minorities live in southwest China. For generations these peoples have maintained landscapes through traditional land use and cultural practices. This indigenous... |

SHIFT ENV 42/2 (Manaus-AM).. |
During the first phase of the project (january 1, 1995 until april 30, 1998), the influence of the water and element supply of tree different plantation systems on the growth and wood formation of eight native tree species (Swietenia macrophylla, Carapa guianensis, Cedrela odorata, Dipterex odorata, Hymenaea courbaril, Ceiba pentandra, Virola surinamensis, Tabebuia heptaphylla) was investigated. In 1998, the data were analyzed. The results subsequently served as a basis for the second phase of the project (comp. chapter 5) which should give deeper insight into the relationship between exogenous and endogenous input, the plant metabolism, and the wood formation and wood quality of plantation-grown trees. due to the results obtained in these studies in the... |

In this project the influence of site conditions of degraded land areas on growth and wood formation of eight selected native tree species (Swietenia macrophylla King, Carapa guianensis, Cedrela odorata L., Dipteryx odorata Willd., Hymenaea courbaril L., Ceiba pentandra Gaertn., Virola surinamensis Warb., Tabebuia heptaphylla were investiated. In order to study the influence of the management of degraded areas on growth and wood formation of tree especies, the investigationson the relationship of enviromental input and tree growth were carried out in three different plantation systems (monoculture system, mixed culturesystem, enrichment of a 25-year-old secondary forrest established in 1992/19993 at the Embrapa Amazonia Ocidental, Manaus-AM (Brasil).
